Commando: Director's Cut --> 9/18/07

What it comes down to is that Commando is a bad movie that is immensely entertaining. I could watch this and have more fun with it, WAY more times than, say, Terminator or something "better".

Yep, Commando and Raw Deal are my favorite Arnolds from that era.
I'm not sure which has the funniest lines, but by god, the opening montage of Arnold and Alyssa playing with dear, eating ice cream and chopping wood is a classic! Then you have fat Freddie Mercury stealing her...man thats awesome..
Plus the other henchmen were funny - Sully and Bill Duke..can't ask for a better movie.

"Commando" is the very pinnacle of action cheese. I have "Running Man" 2-disc from the Wal-Mart $5 bin but would probably pay a little more for this. I'd list this as an eventual but not immediate buy for me.

I definitely plan to get this....sold my barebones edition to FYE as soon as I heard this was coming out. But, I hardly consider 90 seconds of material a "Director's Cut." I wonder if FOX told Mark Lester that he needed to add something back into the movie so that they could sell more copies.

Now if someone will just do the same and re-release a more violent "Director's Cut" of Total Recall...

Received my copy from Deep Discount this afternoon, and I just finished watching the director's cut. The extended tooshed scene is the most notable addition to the new cut, but I didn't mind the additional scenes between Arnold and Rae Dawn Chong. It's still gloriously trashy fun and a promise of better things to come from Schwarzenegger.

Here's a great review from a guy who gets the movie:
http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/co...rectorscut.php
from the review:
...while on the plane headed for South America, Matrix sucker punches the goon sitting next to him, makes his way to the landing gear, and free-falls about 1,000 feet into a swamp. Normally, that kind of drop would kill a stegosaurus, but John Matrix's last name is Matrix so fuck you.

Got this and watched it yesterday. Goddamn, what a fun movie! The new trasnfer is awesome and the 5.1 sound mix does a great job during action scenes (read: the entire film). The new footage doesn't really add much, except during the toolshed scene which was a welcomed addition. The extras are pretty meager, although I haven't listened to the commentary yet. Well worth the $14.99 BB was charging.

Also check out Ruthless Reviews' (a highly underrated site) entry to their Guide to 80's Action Movies on Commando, which reads very much like a profanity-laced, extremely informal term paper on the merits of Commando and an amazingly thorough thesis about Bennett's obvious homoerotic overtones.
And while I haven't bought the DVD yet, I have come to a new conclusion about Arnold since seeing Commando again on TV recently. If you factor James Cameron out of the equation, Total Recall is Arnold's best movie. But since Paul Verhoeven is too much of an unsung genius, Commando takes the cake.

However, the Grindhouse review he did tops it. He proceeds to basically splooge all over Planet Terror and then talk about "Kurt Plissken" and how Death Proof "kicks ass that isn't even in the ass area". He also references rocking out to "Panama" four months before Superbad (chomping a Payday bar at the same time as well!).

I watched one of the featurettes and I was surprised that Rae Dawn Chong had so little to say about this. She seemed really enthusiastic during her interview clips, but they never really got indepth on how she was casted in this movie and working with Arnold. She still looks really good at age 46.

Wow, I never thought I'd say it, but I think the original version is better quality. Based on those screen captures in the above link, the new version is very cropped, is too dark, and has poor contrast. Perhaps the colors in some cases in the new version are slightly better, but that is a minor compliment compared to its obvious faults (damn cropping!!) If only the original release was anamorphic. I will pass on the new version. What a disappointment!
