I get a weekly newsletter from Video Business which includes new announcements. The one I got this morning had this included:
POLTERGEIST 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION (WARNER) 9-4 10-9 DVD $19.97
Horror: A couple experiences ghostly encounters and hires parapsychologists and an exorcist to exorcise their home. Bonuses: documentary. Promotion: select theatrical runs.
9-4 is the order date and 10-9 is the street date. There may still be hope.

Yeah, well until I hear an OFFICIAL announcement, I have just given up on this. I'm sure Spielberg had something to do with this not coming to DVD just like last time.

Just pulled this off the Bits:
Warner has announced a new Poltergeist: 25th Anniversary Edition DVD for release on 10/9 (SRP $19.97), which features a remastered anamorphic widescreen transfer, along with the They Are Here: The Real World of Poltergeists Revealed documentary. Unfortunately, according to Warner, no high-def versions are currently planned

That sounds like a massively underwhelming Special Edition. Two docs, the TV special about the curse, deleted scenes and a trailer would have been nice, if nobody wanted to do a commentary.

This is what we've been waiting for? A weak-ass SE of this classic? I'm not even sure if I want to bother upgrading at this point. I probably will for the new transfer/sound, but, damn, it's disappointing.

Perhaps we've not yet heard all the details. A commentary was reportedly part of the package at one time. But if all we're going to get is the movie and some sort of documentary, I shall pass. Have too many other items on my list to put money down on something lackluster.

Doesn't surprise me that they don't want to play up the "curse" aspect of the films in the supplements.
And there's also the controversy about who the actual director was.
There's actually quite a bit baggage Poltergeist carries that the studios would probably not want to draw attention to, so an underwhelming SE doesn't really surprise me.

Plus from the HTF chat, did they say "great new extra content". This is hardly great.
Hopefully, more details will surface and better extras will be announced.

Remastered, with a Documentary, for about $14.xx online, definately picking this one up. Someone found a preview of the cover art on HTF:

Well, it'd be nice if they followed through with the original plans for the 2-disc set (and maybe they will eventually). With that said, I'll probably still pick it up.

While these special features are lame, I will definitely pick this up... especially if it is around the $14.99 price tag.
Poltergeist is one of my favorite movies of all time, with it's flaws and all.

Ill pick it up. I held off on the old release because the video quality was far from great. Would like to see fully loaded SE but this will do for me for now...

Another website makes it sound like the main one is a two-parter and then there is also one on the film, plus a trailer. That sounds a little better. Maybe the TV special will pop up as a store-exclusive bonus disc.
