It's a good time to plow through some of these unwatched dvds...the next few weeks are incredibly feeble for DVD new releases.

I've got a ton of classics to watch. I just got Bette Davis Volume one (volume two was outstanding) and I'll see all of those films this week. Probably do my Jimmy Stewart signature set too, even though NONE of those films interest me on their face value. And Clark Gable as well. Should be fun.

Glad I don't put off watching what I buy...

I'm glad I try and watch my DVDs as I purchase them. More than once, I've run across some defective discs (mostly picture "freezes"), and had to return them in exchange for a working copy.

Not sure how retailers would feel about returning a DVD months or over a year after purchasing them, to inform them the discs have a defect of some kind, even with the purchase receipt!

Only thing I haven't gotten around to watching currently are the last four discs in the "Saturday Night Live: Season 1" set, which I got as a Xmas gift...

My list is on the first page (and boy, it is a big list), and I managed to knock out 3 movies yesterday. I very rarely get to watch that many, but work got cancelled so I took advantage of my free time. If I keep going at that pace, I think I'll do good (although I'm sure I'll keep buying and the list will grow as well).

So, what is everyone's criteria for calling something "unwatched"? I realize it's pretty self-explanatory at first glance, but since I have a few DVDs where I've actually seen the movie but haven't actually watched the DVD I bought (The Babe, Mr. Baseball, Black Moon Rising, Superman Returns, Batman Begins, Over The Hedge, Cars, etc.), I thought I'd ask if a lot of people's "unwatched" DVDs are really things they haven't seen, or DVDs they've bought of movies they know they like, but just haven't gotten around to actually playing the disc yet.

I listed everything. If I bought it and haven't opened it to view it, it is unwatched, regardless if I have seen it before. I feel that if I spent the money on the DVD, I should at least view it, even if I've already seen it.

Absolutely. I was just wondering what percentage of people's DVDs are completely new to them, or if they are familiar titles they bought in case they wanted to see them again, but haven't yet got around to it.

Ahh. Now you are getting into "Blind Buy" territory which is another whole topic. But don't most people buy movies they have already seen? I know DVD has pretty much invented the "Blind Buy" term because of ridiculously low pricing and sales, but I'd still say most stick to what they know.

I really can't believe how many people blind buy DVDs who would never even buy VHS tapes of movies they did like. My girlfriend's parents used to rent tapes all the time, but now they just buy the DVD when it comes out. And I'd say they haven't watched the vast majority of what they've purchased. Once in a while I'll make a blind buy, but I'm not buying every movie that comes out on Tuesday. There are too many bad movies for me to wager that I'm buying a good one without having seen it.

My criteria for "unwatched" is basically synonymous with blind buy. If I had seen the movie before I bought the DVD, I figure I'll definitely watch it again. It's the ones I haven't seen yet I have to make a point of watching.

You were right the first time Mike. It is self-explanatory as in the O.P.'s thread title ... unwatched DVDs are unwatched DVDs ... nothing to do with the films themselves as there is another forum for that.

2 days and 4 dvds from my unwatched pile are now watched.
But added 7 dvds to the pile today.

I consider ANY dvd I have not watched to be unwatched, even if I saw the movie on VHS or something.

Is that negative progress?

I'm sure I will be adding a few throughout the year as well.

Unwatched dvd means I haven't watched the DVD. When choosing something to watch, I prioritize unwatched/unseen movies/programs over previously-watched ones that I have seen before in another format.
I have definitely done a lot of blind buys, but I also base it on something--reviews, or similarities, or actors, etc; and a 5 buck blind buy, or a TV series at 80% off, is not too much of a risk.
I think it's impossible for me to watch everything this year, even with trying to sell some I had second thoughts on. My first goal is 50% of "my" titles in DVDPro being watched.
Of my 151 unwatched, on first glance, about 10 are my wife's or boy's; probably about 75-80 are total blind buys; the rest are either movies I've seen in the past, or tv shows I have seen at least some of.
Going through DVDPro, I found a title that wasn't marked as "watched'. Whoohoo. Unfortunately, it wasn't on my list in my first post.
Is there a way to export DVDProfiler's database to excel including 'watched' or 'view history'?

Mine is kinda split. A lot of my movies are blind buys that I bought cheap to try the movie and I actually haven't seen the movie yet. Of course, most of the TV Shows I've seen, I just haven't watched that actual DVD yet. So, mine's a mixture...

You can count me out. I love having an unwatched pile. I currently have about 25 unwatched movies and that's just about perfect. There's a nice selection to match whatever mood I happen to be in when the time comes to watch something. I like having that choice. The down side to this of course is that I always seem to be working on my unwatched pile and find very little time to re-watch stuff. But I just got a 56" HD TV and that's giving me a great excuse to revisit some old favorites.

I also have about 7 or 8 TV series unwatched, but I just picked up seasons 2-5 of 24, so that put me a little behind.
