Which episode was this?
There was a religeous guy who was telling Mr. Carlson which songs to play and which not to, and if any were played his group (similar to the "moral majority") would boycott his advertisers.
Johnny Fever showed the lyrics to "Imagine" by John Lennon and that song was added to the list. In the end, Mr. Carlson stood up the guy and said something along the lines that he needed to watch his friends because his friends may be with him out of fear.
What I was really wanting was the quote of what Mr. Carlson said to the guy at the very end.

Edit: Wow, wikipedia was a lot easier..
Episode: "Clean Up Radio Everywhere" (from season 3)
Carlson ends his relationship with CURB, but not before giving Halyer a very insightful warning. "..watch out for those broadcasters who cave into your...'pressure'. Principles not gonna mean a thing to them. All they'll be doing is saving their swimming pools. Oh, they'll be the first ones to come and sit at your table, but I think the good ones are going to be the ones that are going to take a loss and put up a fight." When Halyer replies that he'll just have to learn love his enemies, Carlson replies, "I hope so, because I don't think you'll be able to trust your friends." Andy tells Mr. Carlson that if worse comes to worst, he'll sick Les on CURB. Arthur ponders Andy's statement and muses to himself, "Boy, that could signal the end of organized religion as we know it."

What an incredible disappointment. It sounds like not only replaced majority of music but simply cut out entire scenes as well. I was prepared to buy it with some changes but this sounds like a wholesale butchering. No Pink Floyd "Dogs"? No "Hot Blooded"? As much as it pains me to say, No Sale for this big WKRP fan. Man, am I bummed.

This does suck. I wish they had decided to put out a "collector's edition" with most, if not all, the original music intact. It would have to have a higher price tag, but I would have bought it. Maybe even sell it through a licensing deal with Rhino Homemade or something to cut down on distribution costs to the stores. Limit the number of sets, price it so they don't lose money, and make a profit off the regular season sets in the stores that Joe Six Pack doesn't care about if it's missing music and scenes.
I love TV shows on DVD, but my main pet peeve with them is the studios just fail miserably in so many cases to not see that fans get the best package possible while they will go out of their way to do so with classic movies (in most cases...I know there are classic movies that don't have great treatments on DVD, but let's not start listing them to compare...) This is a CLASSIC show, HIGHLY in demand, and to put out a half assed package is unacceptable. I could see the half assed set for the stores, but like I said, they really needed to have an online exclusive or something with the original episodes restored with most-if not all-the original music in tact. I would have paid more money for that. Now, I might pick this up if Fox has an incredible sale on on it, like in a buy one get one free or something, where I can snag it for a really low price, but it just won't be the same. Before, I was going to order this the day it came out, price be damned. There is no way I am paying full price for half assed crap.

After reading this, Universal gets HUGE props for Miami Vice. Something really has to be done about this whole "music rights" bullshit..

Unless it means changing copyright laws or changing the music industry as a whole, I don't see what could be done to get the music rights expenses any better.
I've said it in similar threads and I will say it again here...we need this country to pass laws like they have in the UK that if the music was cleared for the broadcast, it's cleared for all home video formats, with no extra costs. But then the music lobbyists wouldn't get kickbacks, so I am not holding my breath for that.
And something has been bugging me about that blog entry TVshowsonDVD links...
If you are the marketing director for Fox and you have to question the fan loyalty to this type of show, then you should be FIRED. A ten year old could see the demand for this show with the original music. It's one of the most requested shows at tvshowsondvd.com, and just look at the sales of bootleg sets with the original music. It's a freaking no brainer. If you had to put out a "best of set" to get a feel for how well a season set would sell with the music, then FIND ANOTHER JOB.
I loathe best of sets in general. What a stupid way to find out if a show could be marketable or not. Could you see them doing that with movies? "Well, we don't know if this classic movie would see on DVD. We really don't want to spend time restoring the whole 2 hour movie...maybe we should put out a DVD of select scenes and see how that sells." No, it would be MORONIC. So are best of TV sets.

Or perhaps it would have been better to start with a best-of disc, focusing on episodes without much music (good sales of that disc could have justified a bigger budget for the first season).

Horrible news about WKRP in Cincinnati.
I'm afraid that this is the same thing that may happen to Wonder Years (a show with music licensing issues). If that's the case, I hope that it never gets released. I prefer having the memories intact of the original broadcasts than having a bastardized version on DVD similar to "WKRP...".

Never been a fan of WKRP, and wouldn't care to get it on DVD, but this presentation is disgusting. What a hatchet job. I wonder how much revenue Fox is going to lose. And if this doesn't sell, I wonder if they'll conclude there's no market. Which would be right, in the sense that fans want a product that as closely mirrors the original television exhibition as possible.
Music copyright law is definitely in need of major renovation. And most importantly, the changes need to be retroactive. Until that happens, we're going to continue getting these slice-and-dice fests of our favorite TV shows. What a waste.

Might as well call it WK in Cincinnati since it is such a hack job. I hope at least they are honest on the packaging about the music changes for the buyers out there that don't know about these changes. If not then they should be held accountable for that.

im sick of all these tv sets getting hack job releases. even new tv show releases have some of the music replaced which is unexcusable. I love WKRP in Cincinnati and to find out that they didn't have all the music intact & that scenes were cut out is bullshit!
this has become a trend as of late with alot of tv on dvd releases, the worst i think is the married with children, theme song being replaced.
so many shows now days are getting shit releases its unbelievable.

I have a feeling this is going to be one of those World War 3 threads the likes of the Back to the Future debacle and any Star Wars argument you can come up with...but my two cents....
I see in one of the links that this set isnt supposed to cost much. The only thing I can think of comparitively is the All in the Family and Good Times sets, and I believe that they were about 19.99 on street week and beyond. If that is a fair price to assume, and assuming the wife allows me to spend or I can sneak out with a few dollars that week, I would be in for between 10 and 20 bucks. The argument then becomes, "How can I support this garbage with my purchase; how can we site change without boycott?" And, also, what do I say when I take a look at these DVD's and find that these butcherings arent even close to the shows I remember when I was growing up (at 33 now, I was in my preteen years when I became hooked). Well, there are some great moments in there that didnt necessarily involve music in the background that I havent seen in a long time and, since I doubt this old a property will reimerge on cable TV or syndication, this will probably be the only chance I will get to see these moments, and that's worth between 10 and 20 bucks. More than that, I cant do.
Just please tell me the Mormon Tabernacle Quior is still there singing, "She's Having Our Baby!!!"
