 Best Buy US is selling it for more than the Canadian ones.

Tenacious D 09-01-06 01:57 PM

Wow. Hopefully that's the full retail price and BB will have that sucker on sale the first week.

joltman 09-02-06 06:41 AM

I could be wrong, but I think the price for DVDs before release date on BB's website are more than what they are on release week. So, I'd be willing to bet they'll be cheaper on release week.

It's true that Best Buy lists DVDs at higher prices up till release week. But I'm not expecting a discount for the Star Wars tin, at least not much of one. Maybe $10 less. But $80 is still too much for my liking. Might consider it at $60, which would be reasonable.

However, given that the tin will likely remain close to $90, I think I will be heading to Circuit City for the lithographs. I dig the one for V for Vendetta, and those for Star Wars will serve as nice companions for it. And they're free! The graphic novels offered by Wal-Mart look cool, but I'm going to purchase these only once.

TomOpus 09-02-06 10:25 PM

I'm not sure which way to go on these. The graphic novels really don't interest me. Those lithos aren't bad but I don't have a place for 'em. The tin is nice but I'll have to wait to see the final price and if anything else comes with it.

So, at this moment, looks like I'll be heading to Target.

Disc-Flipper 09-03-06 12:48 AM

I wonder if the Best Buy tin will have the keepcases inside, or some sort of other disc holders?

animatedude 09-03-06 02:12 AM

man...iam such a loser.i've been holding of buying any Star Wars boxsets since 2004 but i can't believe that now iam tempted to buy this Tin and it's almost double the price of the previous boxset AND IT'S NO ANAMORPHIC.89.99 is just too much damn it.

Supermallet 09-03-06 02:34 AM

Does the tin just hold the standard cases?

As much as I didn't want to buy these, those CC lithographs are looking mighty nice...

And has it actually been confirmed by a reputable source that these are not anamorphic? Not a "friend of a friend told me" kind of thing, but a "Well, we got our review disc in and no, it's not anamorphic" kind of thing.

moklerman 09-03-06 03:03 AM

Will someone please explain to me the difference between "anamorphic" widescreen and the widescreen that these dvd's will be presented in. I don't get it.

The original versions are being taken from an old laserdisc master that was transferred for viewing on a 4x3 screen. The aspect ratio is correct, but the resolution is far less than if they had done a new transfer for viewing on a 16x9 screen. These transfers are actually the 2.35 image and the black bars above and below, in a 4x3 shape. A 16x9 transfer would have the 2.35 image within a 16x9 shaped frame, with a substantial increase in resolution.

This is a really good explanation:

Only the original versions are Non-Anamorphic. The SE versions will be the same discs in the previous box set. However, this new set obviously doesn't have the bonus disc with all the bonus materials from the other set.

Filmmaker 09-03-06 09:14 AM

DVDTalk, for me, fails to have much validity if one can't discuss both the things in the world of DVD that please them and that dismay them, so if this isn't the place to "bitch and whine" about "whatever the fuck is pissing [us] off" (classy moderator speak there, nemein) regarding something DVD related, what do we do? Start a thread with the specific intention of "bitching and whining", or is this to be one of those "if you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all" lovefest sites?

TomOpus 09-03-06 09:27 AM

^^^ I believe Nemein was referring to posts that were slyly referring to the DVDs not being anamorphic, etc... instead of talking only about the exclusives (which this thread is all about)

Thanks for the link! At least I "feel" like I know a little more.

As far as these DVD's in particular, this may sound weird, I don't know that I want it to look "too" good. Part of the charm of the original trilogy, for me, was the rustic feel. From what another poster said, the transfers aren't coming from the LD's themselves, just the film that the LD's were transferred from. I'm relatively sure the quality will be good enough for me.

I want to buy these because I want the "original" film(s) on DVD without all the modern re-conditioning.

On topic: I'd settle for a nice cardboard box set when they come out. Exclusives are nice in a way but they tend to just get in the way. I bought the Two Lane Blacktop tin set and the Showgirls oversized box set and they're just a pain to store with the normal DVD's I have. It's a simplistic philosophy, I know but oddball sized stuff like that has a strike against it in my book. Kudos to Best Buy on the V for Vendetta exclusive for making the overall box the same height as a regular DVD. I was more than happy to plop down the $34 for that.

Just my 2 cents. Thanks again for the info.

I'm not sure I can agree with that thinking. When these were first released to theatres, they certainly didn't look "rustic". There is simply no excuse but laziness for these to not look good. The 2004 SEs were (for the most part) very well reviewed as far as image quality, esp TESB.

Actually, all these cool exclusives are killing me, because I would have loved to have been forced to make a decision as to which one to get, heck I might have even gotten more than one and regifted the extra DVDs. Too bad Lucasfilm had to make my decision for me.

I love extra goodies like this, I have several odd shaped boxes and packagings on my DVD shelves. I sincerely wish some of these could join them. The tin is the one I'd probably end up with, but I love the lithographs and the graphic novels too.

You make a fair point, TomOpus; sorry, nemein, I just get a little rankled (and, frankly, fearful) when I fear honest discourse is being squashed, but I understand it in the context of this particular thread. I stand by the admonishment of your use of language, though; I talk like a sailor all the time, but one expects a higher caliber of representational behavior from a moderator...

PixyJunket 09-03-06 11:29 AM

You know what I'd like? A deal for getting the Trilogy DVD set AND Lego Star Wars II together.

It wouldn't be a Star Wars thread without it spinning wildly off-topic :D I guess we needed a little mod smack-down before it spiraled to the point of getting locked.

You'd think some stores might do that. Sounds like a logical tie-in.

No matter how clean they make these, or in what resolution they show them, they will look like films shot in 1977, 1980, and 1983, respectively. It's only the added stuff that looks out of place. So your theory that putting these in anamorphic would make them look too clean or too new is 100% inaccurate.

Actually, anamorphic may make them look worse. You'd likely see the flaws better.

Supermallet 09-04-06 12:06 AM

They make look subjectively worse in that it's easier to spot the flaws. But they'll look objectively better in that you're seeing the flaws because of the resolution boost.

What annoys me more than anything is that my HD DVD player will not stretch non-anamorphic material, which means I have to use my inferior Oppo DVD player.

Why not use your format modes on your TV to stretch the picture?

I know on my widescreen TV, it locks the aspect ratio of a progressive signal. So any benefit I would get from that would be lost from having the gray bars on the left and right of the image also.

Weird. Neither of my HDTVs do that. That truly sucks.

Slowpc 09-04-06 04:04 PM

It will not be 89.99 here in the states... we got them in a few days ago and i think they were about 70 bucks... so a few more bucks list price than each disc.

Sale price is unknown ... until the flyer gets released online.

It's a Samsung 30" from 2002. I've even gotten into the service menu and played around and I can't fix it. My DVD player has a zoom function, but it zooms in increments of 2x, 4x, 8x. My setup is fine most other ways, non-16x9 widescreen material is just a major PITA.

Phod 09-04-06 10:50 PM

has this been answered yet...

any fixes to the SE DVDs like the audio flipping/sound disappearing in ANH or the green saber or Vader's pink bubble gum saber?

Cameron 09-04-06 11:02 PM

check the main thread...this is just on bonus exclusives

Sold! Looks like I'll be swinging by Best Buy next Tuesday AM.

Supermallet 09-06-06 01:43 AM

I don't think anyone answered this, will the BB tin house the standard DVD cases, or will they have a different system to hold the discs inside the tin?

PixyJunket 09-06-06 07:59 AM

Looks like nobody is giving a deal on Lego Star Wars II (still pending: Fry's). :(

Bandit03 09-06-06 08:07 AM

Now that I know the price, Im going for the Tin. The lithographs are nice but I know I will never put them up. They will end up in a draw for a few years then in the garbage after that.
