I have a couple of the previous sets, but I'd rather not sell them until it is confirmed that EVERY special feature from them is carried over. I'm stupid that way.

From everything I have read, the extra features from the Special Editions have been carried over to these editions. The big draw to upgrade is the improved film transfer (every frame restored using the Lowry process) and the DTS sound. So until the HD versions come out this will be the next best thing. I had no trouble selling most of the JB movies I have in anticipation of these new releases. I figure with the DDD November sale, Vol 1 & 2 should go for around $45 ea. That's a great deal. I already have more than enough money (from the ebay/amazon sales) to cover the new purchases.

Here's the link from MGM on the disc info Volume 1 Volume 2 Also here's a link on a Region 4 Review of each film in the entire set. Really good reading....Ultimate Bonds - Region 4 reviews

Thanks tjn007!

I'm convinced, and wish that I could sell my old versions on ebay. However, I store my DVDs in binders, and while I keep my cases, they are miles away in someone's basement and I'm not sure I'm I'll have time to dig them out before the old ones are worthless (if they aren't already).

DDD raised their price on these sets since the last time you must have looked. They'd be about $48.84 during the sale if the price remains the same as it is now ($61.05). Not a big difference though. I'm more interested in sets 3 & 4 and those won't be available for the DDD sale (no pre-orders).

Does anyone know if there are any new features on the Die Another Day disc or if it's the exact same as the original?

Some interesting screenshot comparisons of all the Bond films at:
http://filmz.dk/articles/view/1100/

Click on the link for each movie, then a page of screenshots from the SE version will display. Click on each screenshot and the new Ultimate version will appear. Then you can click back and forth between the two.

the new x men disc had a form that shows that volume 1 & 2 will be available for rebates from fox

DavisDVD has a new press release for the James Bond Ultimate Collections:
http://www.davisdvd.com/news/press.html

The only difference I see from previous information is that in the list of extra features they have 'New' listed in front of the ones that apparently were not in the previous editions.

Just looked at most, but not all of these. It looks like what they did to the color scheme of a lot of the post-Connery films is the exact opposite of what they did to the earlier ones. For example, flesh tones look (to my eyes, anyway) pinker/redder on the new post-Connery titles but less so on the new transfers of the Connery films.

There also appears to be some major zooming/cropping on the new GoldenEye, and possibly on A View to a Kill as well.

The other difference I see is no mention of the original mono tracks being included on the older films.

From the link:
"Each film is presented in their original aspect ratio, with original burned in subtitles and captions, mono and stereo sound (in addition to the new 5.1 DTS Audio). "

Is it safe to assume I can ditch my older Bond DVDs?

I liked the screencaps of the older Bond movies. A lot sharper then the old DVDs. Although the colors looked more muted.

I read somewhere that not everything on the 2 disc SE of Die Another Day was carried over.

stingermck 11-01-06 10:36 AM

Oh to buy these sets or not. Had the original 20, but sold them last year to finance 1/3 of my Plasma, lol. I did make some copies though :)

Just wish these sets were in order, but that will never happen.

It looks nice, but I wish I could blow up to comparisons, if you click on the movie link it is just a whole bunch of stills from the movie. :(

slop101 11-01-06 10:58 AM

Any info on if/when these new Bond dvds will be relesed separately?

You gotta be kidding.

Did you click on each still? Doing so will bring up the corresponding shot from the new version. You can't do a side-by-side comparison, but it's pretty easy to spot the differences if you click repeatedly to switch from one to the other.

I just don't think that the screenshots tell the whole story about whether or not the PQ is better. In most of the Connery films the UEs are clearly better. The screenshots on others seem to be a mixed bag. From the same movie a couple of the SE screenshots might look better and the other half from that movie might look better on the UE. Based on reviewer comments that I've read, it seems that while the UEs may not be perfect, they are at least as good or better in all but a couple of instances (e.g., Goldeneye).

From what I've seen, it's probably not worth it to double-dip unless you can sell your SEs for enough to pay for the new sets (which is what I did). I'm guessing/hoping they'll sell individual titles in the spring so that we can pick a favorite such as Goldfinger where none of the other titles in the volume might be ones that we want.

More screenshot comparisons at this site (Dr. No, Goldfinger, Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever, OHMSS, Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, Goldeneye):

I'd love to hear some details on this...

This appears to be true. I have listed the extras from the current release and then the future release.

Current Release:

Commentaries: director Lee Tamahori and producer Michael G. Wilson
actors Pierce Brosnan and Rosamund Pike
Inside "Die Another Day": This is a feature-length documentary (80 minutes, to be exact) that starts off the second disc. Although essentially a bunch of featurettes that can be played together, these are well-produced pieces that get right to the point and take the viewer inside the making of each specific section. Rather than interviews going on about how great or wonderful each scene is, the viewer is taken behind-the-scenes through clips of the production at work and interviews that are informative. The sections are: "Intro & Surfing", "Hovercraft Chase", "Cuba", "Quartermaster', "Ice Palace", "Car Battle" and "Post Production and Finale".

Propaganda: Two teasers for "Die Another Day", the film's theatrical trailer and several TV spots are included. There's also Madonna's "Die Another Day" video, a trailer for the "007: Nightfire" video game (good video game, by the way) and a "making of" for both the video game and the music video. Lastly, trailers for "Agent Cody Banks", "Bulletproof Monk", "Evelyn: Special Edition DVD", and the "Windtalkers: Special Edition DVD" are included here.

Mission Deconstruction This section offers multi-angle looks at: "Hovercraft Chase", "Blades", "Car Battle" and "Antonov Fight" scenes. There are also script-to-screen comparisons for "Hovercraft Chase" and "Car Battle". Finally, a piece on the title sequence and another on the digital grading process used to correct skies and alter the look of the film round out the section.

Also: Rounding out the supplemental section are short pieces on Bond's gadgets, an image gallery and additional DVD-ROM features that will be available on the release date.

I sold all the Bond films expect Goldeneye and Die Another Day. Goldeneye because the reviews I read on the transfer of the new version wasn't a good as the first and DAD because I would only get maybe a buck or two for the film since the market seems to be flooded with used copies. Everything I read was the exact extras were being carried over to the new versions. It seems that DAD is the one exception so I'm glad I didn't sell it.

Why do they mix and match these box sets every time they are released? Can't they go in order of release??
