From Wikipedia's OHMSS entry:

George Lazenby did not reprise the role in Diamonds Are Forever. He thought the tuxedo-clad secret agent would be archaic in the sexually liberated 1970s. He had been offered a seven-film contract, had signed a letter of intent to star in Diamonds Are Forever, and was even paid an initial fee installment, (which he refunded), before declining.

Thanks!! Wow, stupid choice eh?! Any idea what happened to his career after that? Not exactly a household name.

If you haven't got the sets yet, Amazon has all 4 sets bundled together as a pre-order coming out on Feb. 6 for $179.99 (makes them $45 each).

That's just not correct. Although Wikipedia has a lot of good info the downside is anybody can add content ... doesn't make it correct. That Broccoli would give ANYBODY a seven year contract (particularly after working with Connery) is laughable.

In John Cork's book James Bond - The Legacy he mentions the many things that led to Lazeby's downfall. This includes the press that never gave him a break, public fighting with his co-star Diana Rigg, a film script/approach that didn't resonate broadly with audiences and (most importantly) a less than expected box office sales "ultimate selling less than half the tickets of its predecessor You Only Live Twice." The 'stick-a-fork-in-it' moment may have come in the summer of 1970 when UA relased a double-bill of Thunderball and YOLT to well attended and cheering audiences.

UA wanted Connery back, Broccoli really didn't want Connery back because of his attitude toward the role and (more importantly) his salary request. They actually signed John Gavin (an American no less) to a contract (p. 128).

Hope this helps.

I think Lazeby was a fine Bond and OHMSS a fine film ... but money talks and we know what walks.

I don't think this issue has been reported yet, but there's a problem with the DTS and 5.1 tracks on Moonraker ... at least with my disc.

Specifically,

The Shirley Bassey Title Song of Moonraker. The vocals are going to the Rears only!!!

Not my setup. The original audio track sounds/works fine. I tried a couple other discs in that boxset (YOLT, TND) and those DTS tracks title songs are fine (i.e. vocals coming out the center speaker as expected).

So, it is either a problem with my disc or a larger problem.

The only thing coming out of the center speaker (during the Moonraker Title Song) is music, no vocals.

Perhaps someone else can verify this on their system.

Just got my 4 sets today.... and I ended up with two of the FOR YOUR EYES ONLY booklets and no GOLDENEYE booklet.

So... anyone have an extra GOLDENEYE booklet? I would be happy to pay your postage fee (I'm in Dallas, TX) or trade my extra FOR YOUR EYES ONLY booklet for it.

Thanks,

Mike

Being on a Bond kick lately, I pulled out these boxed sets and began going through the series in chronological order. I watched them all when I first bought the set, but it's been a couple of years since I spun any of these discs. I've been very disappointed that, of the first five movies only two have played completely fine (Dr. No and From Russia with Love). I made it about 10 minutes into Goldfinger before the glitches froze the entire thing. There were a few quick glitches in Thunderball, and I had several throughout You Only Live Twice just now, including a few that forced my player to skip ahead an entire minute at a time.

There are no scratches or scuff marks of any kind on any of the discs, though I did notice that there's an odd discoloration running throughout the data side that I can only characterize as resembling liquid bubbles. You know, that sort of holographic weirdness that doesn't seem flat like it should be? Am I alone in this? What causes it?

He was signed to appear in Bruce Lee's GAME OF DEATH in 1973.
I know he made some Hong Kong kung fu action flicks around then.
I remember one of them he sports a thick mustache.

Sitting in the closet for a long time, with hot summer heat and winter coldness for the past through years?

Nope. On the shelves with everything else. The temperature in the entertainment room is pretty consistently cool.

And now, look at mine, does anyone's GoldenEye disc 1 look like this?
(Obviously unplayable halfway through)

Looks like the disc layers are coming apart.

This is making me paranoid about my copies.

When did GoldenEye come out on Blu-ray? I've read several posts now referring to it. I thought I bought all the Blu-ray Bonds. Or are you guys talking about Goldfinger or did I miss a title?

Goldeneye's not out on Blu yet. Those posts are referring to Disc 1 of the Ultimate Edition on DVD...

My disc looks perfect, not a flaw. Are you sure that's a non-counterfeit, Region 1 Ultimate Edition release of GoldenEye? The reason I ask is that the inner ring on my UE GoldenEye Disc 1 is not white nor anywhere near being white ...

Re: James Bond: Ultimate Collections - Due 11/7/06

I have the single disc re-release of Goldeneye and it has an inner ring like that. My disc is flawless as well though.

I have a feeling the poster of that pic got stuck with the very rare disc that had a manufacturing flaw that was undetectable until it did what it did. I'm sure this thing happens occasionally, but we likely don't hear about it.

My GoldneEye doesn't look like manicsounds's, but I just checked and both discs have the same swirly, distorted look that the rest of my Ultimate Edition DVDs seem to have. Not happy.

Sent an email to Fox to see what they say, but I don't know if they'll help me with a replacement. Probably much easier just to buy a DVD single disc to satisfy my needs....

After playing GoldenEye on DS, made me want to watch the film all over again, so dug out my DVD (never been played), and this is what I find.... oh well.

I can't speak for your DVD, manicsounds, but I've discovered that my DVDs seem less likely to give me playback problems in the portable DVD player than in the Blu-ray player. I haven't tried GoldenEye yet, but we had problems with Thunderball on the Blu-ray player and finished it without a problem. Also had the same experience with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom a few nights ago.

Re: James Bond: Ultimate Collections - Due 11/7/06

I've picked up every wave of Bond DVDs and this is why I save my older copies of movies I love. I'm always worried that an important (to me) disc will go bad or something is amiss or changed in a movie print that was fine in an earlier issue.

I know what you mean, I have that too, so that's why I still have my old DVD player hooked up to my TV in case the BD player is having problems reading DVDs, which has happened.

But just look at that triangular mountain formation.... that ain't playing through anywhere. And yes, I tried it.
