King Kong is strictly not an epic of a movie in equivalence to The Ten Commandments, or Ben-Hur, deserving a three hour, or more time frame, and the theatrical release was over extended. Peter Jackson has converted a story, which could have been sufficiently dramatized within two hours, into three.

I was all for the LOTR EE cuts. But I'm out on this one. I still say that I could take the theatrical version into the editing room, cut out an hour, and have the exact same film....

I thought the theatrical cut had about 90% too much Jimmy. Character development is great, but his was not needed at all.

Since i knew this was going to come out before the holiday... I am happy.

If we get DTS with it going over 2 discs... I am happy.

I'm really curious what the HD-DVD situation will be with this...

I'm waiting for reviews to see if the extended cut will help or hurt this film. It wouldn't be the first time an extended cut made a movie more bearable. Then I'll decide which version I'd like to pick up.

no 2-discs w/ dts = no sale.

EDIT: Rethought my statement. Maybe no sale, but definitely a rental to see the quality. dts = instant sale.

Yep. Where are those "phantom edit" guys when we need them?

It better be DTS or no sale!

On the other hand, if it was in an ape head instead of a box than it's a definite sale...DTS or not!!

Jesus Christ. I felt the theatrical version was way too long, now they are adding more scenes? By the way, I love the extended editions of the LOTR trilogy, so I don't hate PJ, but Kong just bored me to death.

I'm actually very surprised that Jackson didn't provide a commentary for the first release. DTS or not, I'd probably buy this one just for a that; I'm anxious to hear Jackson explain the movie, and why he did certain things. But I'd also forgo that if it meant getting the movie on HD DVD.

I enjoyed Kong, but I have no interest in buying the Extended Edition. Unlike LOTR, I can't see any added footage that would be of interest to me. Not to mention all of the behind-the-scenes stuff was already covered in the production diaries.

Technically, that's a 8-disc set for each film... although Disc #1 from the new sets is redundant with previous releases. I'd consider that a makeshift 7-disc set.
It appears that, Peter Jackson is competing with himself, for superlative production, ever since his LOTR trilogy.

Well, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy does weigh in (not counting double-dips) at a staggering 21 discs. With the new sets, that's 24 discs.
