King Kong: Deluxe Extended Edition 11/14

from the Digital Bits:

Here's some standard DVD news that's sure to come as no surprise: Universal has just officially announced the release of Peter Jackson's King Kong: Deluxe Extended Edition on 11/14. There will be a 3-disc, anamorphic widescreen version (SRP $34.98) and the same 3-disc version packaged in a gift box (presumably with lots of as-yet-unrevealed swag items) for $79.98. We expect more details soon.

Good God, I could barely sit through it in the theatres let alone an "exteneded cut". Could be somewhat interesting if he suffles new scenes and rids of Cabin boy Jimy storyline.

Mr. Cinema 07-19-06 08:49 AM

there's supposed to be added action sequences, so I'm all for it. I'm curious to see what's part of that gift box.

rexinnih 07-19-06 08:59 AM

Dts?

TomOpus 07-19-06 09:08 AM

dts would be sweet.

Sign me up for the gift box that's planned.

Mr. Cinema 07-19-06 09:09 AM

If they put the entire extended cut on 1 disc, I don't think there'd be dts. But spread over 2 discs, then I think it would be on there.

I'm holding out for the HD DVD, but I may also get the gift box.

dsa_shea 07-19-06 09:14 AM

I second the idea of a Kong Bust a la Planet of the Apes.

Geofferson 07-19-06 09:22 AM

I'll be interested in checking it out.

Giles 07-19-06 09:32 AM

me too.

LorenzoL 07-19-06 09:37 AM

I need to see what the gift set will contain before I'll double dip again on this movie.

joshtown 07-19-06 09:39 AM

I'm not sure how this film warrants any more of a running time. It was enjoyable and all, but if most of the added scenes are included to flesh out the storyline, I'm not going anywhere near this. It's about a rampaging monkey for crying out loud. More action, less setup, please.

Giles 07-19-06 09:47 AM

I merntioned this in the other King Kong thread, but according to a sidebar story in Entertainment Weekly earlier in the year, they described a number of scenes that hit the cutting room floor and it was definately more action and "less setup" scenes.

Mr. Cinema 07-19-06 09:56 AM

Yes, the added scenes will feature some action. There's more dinosaur footage and another monster that was left out, if I remember correctly.

dick_grayson 07-19-06 10:09 AM

this movie was way too long for me. I was all about the extended LOTR dvds, but I'll pass on this.

cisman 07-19-06 10:10 AM

I believe it was the creature in the trailer that was in the water when they were in the swampy area. Never made it to the final cut. That's supposed to be in there.

I was expecting this and only bought the bare bones edition so I'll probably double dip and get this.

I really hope we get a DTS track. A movie like this just warrants it.

I would love to see more Kong/Dino battles but I doubt that'll happen.

Maxflier 07-19-06 10:41 AM

What are the odds of the inevitable HD DVD release being the extended version? I love the movie, but really don't feel like triple dipping on it.

fryinpan1 07-19-06 10:41 AM

This better have a PJ commentary.

yeldarb367 07-19-06 10:44 AM

Looks like I'll be waiting a little longer before I get King Kong. Hopefully more details will arise soon.

madara 07-19-06 10:53 AM

Awesome, how much is the additional run time? This and Narnia EE are going be sweet.

Josh H 07-19-06 11:00 AM

I held off for this version, and it comes out on my b-day now. Sweet!

Harold Wazzu 07-19-06 11:45 AM

Here's hoping that the giftset includes a Kong head like POTA...that would be awesome!

GoldenJCJ 07-19-06 11:56 AM

I still haven't watched my current 2-disc Kong DVD, yet I'm intrigued by this newer extended cut; And I may actually buy it...I'm off to seek professional help now...

So this, plus the 2-disc version, plus the production diaries could equal up to 7 discs for one film. Is that a record?

I love the theatrical cut of Kong, so I do want that version on HD DVD. They could release the HD DVD has a 2-disc set with each version on separate discs.

PerryD 07-19-06 12:39 PM

The current Kong runs at least 30 minutes too long, mostly due to the action sequences that I thought would never end. But, yet, I'm still intrigued by the extended cut...

Probably... but it ties Peter Jackson's own record on the LotR films.

Each film has a 2-disc theatrical + 4-disc extended + a new 2-disc set coming this fall, with the 2nd disc holding a new documentary.

Technically, that's a 8-disc set for each film... although Disc #1 from the new sets is redundant with previous releases. I'd consider that a makeshift 7-disc set. ;)
