If you look at the fan choice scene with the battle between Hot Rod and Galvatron you can see that their 4:3 version has lots of image cropped on every side when you compare it to previous 4:3 versions...

EDIT: those YouTube videos are the same as the one that was already available on YouTube that I posted earlier except that it has been split into different parts.

Their war ... Our world.

Even if it IS Michael Bay, the new live-action film looks extremely cool!

OK, so.... is the widescreen considered OAR? The full-screen comparo on the site shows that it's cropped on all sides, ouch!!!

Well, if they did do tons of restoration work as promised, the 4x3 version is most likely pan-and-scan as opposed to open matte (like Disney's 2-disc version of Lady and the Tramp). Otherwise they'd have to shell out for two separate restorations.

Since 16x9 is, as far as I know, the OAR, I suppose that's why it got the benefit of the doubt.

Well it's as close to OAR as we're gonna get. Besides, the Metrodome release showed so much of the sides you could see the edges of the negative. I very much doubt we were intended to see that much. I just wonder if all the color correction will address the color errors that the film has always had regarding the color schemes of certain characters in a few shots here and there.

So what is the correct way to view this film? I have watched it in 4x3 for years and it looks fine. I don't remember that much about how it was presented in theaters (I was only 6). Is sony providing a 16x9 version just for the sake of widescreen tv's?

The movie played theatrically at 1.85:1, but its original animation was drawn at about 1.4:1. Which one is the OAR is the subject of much debate.

See my review of the British "Reconstructed" DVD:

Does anyone know the MSRP for this dvd?

Amazon has it listed at $21.98 but DVDPlanet is listing it at $19.95. DVDPlanet is offering 40% off that price (so $11.95) and I wanted to figure if I should go with this or if other e-tailers would be dropping their price in accordance.

Thanks.
