Finally complainers get their way, and there are still some people who want to complain and say 'oh Lucas is greedy'. Isn't that a point that doesn't need to be made? Yeah, Lucas doesn't NEED the money but an empire is an empire. Bill Gates doesn't need money yet he's still in business. His level of greed was well established when these movies were re-released to begin with, right?

Oh brother the SW coffers grow even fatter now.
Its cool and I will be happy to purchase them for the collection. Still sucks that things weren't done this way to begin with and I am sure that in a few years we will see the mega giant all in one collection on HD-DVD/Blueray with everything in one set as we should.
Nice to have this though.

If he really thought they'd been destroyed, I don't have a problem, but if he didn't, it's pretty shitty to lie to the public and his fans in order to make money.

Great news, certainly. I'll probably still watch the 04 SEs, but that's because I actually like the Prequels, and feel they fit in better. It is great to have a choice, though.
I have no qualms double-dipping on this. Star Wars is Star Wars. How many different versions have all we fans bought already? This will mark my fourth purchase of the set. I'm sure many of you have more than that.

While this is one part shameless cash grab, it's two parts exactly what I wanted. I'll seriously begrudge a man for holding hostage a part of American culture, but I can't get near as angry over annoying business tactics. If this news holds up in the way we expect, kudos to Lucas.

I danced for joy, and now I'm in shock.
I am curious if the original version of Star Wars will include two pieces of dialogue missing from their home video versions on VHS and laserdisc. That would be C-3PO's comments about the tractor beam while R2 is searching the Death Star's data banks, and the stormtroopers shouting, "Close the blast doors!"
But even if this is still missing, right now I'm slumped in my chair and breathing a sigh of relief like Admiral Ackbar watching a super star destroyer explode. This is truly the greatest DVD news I've ever heard!!!

Wow. All the haters out there who said "moaning won't work" can kiss my ass. Seriously. Star Wars is pretty much "done" for me, as I have little interest in watching them anymore, but I will still pick it up...because when I watch them I want to watch the originals!
Although this is pretty much a cash grab.

Ok, here is some more info from USA Today. Not good news on the transfer - sounds like the old Laserdisc transfers..hopefully they are just puffing about this and have remastered copies out there.
Die-hard Star Wars fans soon can see the original theatrical versions of the first three Star Wars films on DVD.
Even though George Lucas adamantly declared 2004's digitally restored Star Wars Trilogy DVDs the definitive versions of his movies, fans have held out hope for DVDs of the originals.
Their wishes will be granted Sept. 12 when Fox releases new two-disc DVDs ($30 each) of Star Wars (since retitled as Episode IV: A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi that include the films as they first appeared in theaters, along with the new, restored versions (now available in the four-disc $70 Star Wars Trilogy).
The individual DVDs will be taken off the market on Dec. 31, a strategy that Disney uses on many of its classic releases.
Lucas re-released his original three Star Wars films in theaters in 1997 with inserted scenes and improved special effects. Those "special editions" were further enhanced for the four-disc DVD set. With the original versions coming to DVD, here's what you'll see again:
• In Star Wars, Han Solo shoots a bounty hunter named Greedo. Lucas changed the scene later so it seemed that Greedo draws first, and changed it again for the DVD so that they appear to shoot simultaneously.
• In Empire Strikes Back, the ice creature that captures Luke Skywalker gets less screen time.
• In Jedi, Sebastian Shaw returns as Anakin in the movie's final scene. Lucas substituted Hayden Christiansen, who plays Anakin in the more recent films, for the 2004 DVD.
Back in 2004, Lucas told the New York Post, "The special edition is the one I wanted out there."
This new set of DVDs does not constitute "George changing his mind," says Lucasfilm's Jim Ward. "What we've always said is George viewed the revised versions of the films as the definitive versions."
Fan attachment to the originals is strong. The movies topped entertainment website IGN.com's recent chart of Top 25 Most Wanted DVDs.
"People want the option of having the movies that they remember and people are opposed to George Lucas' revisionist tendencies," says the site's Chris Carle.
The original films' video quality will not match up to that of the restored versions. "It is state of the art, as of 1993, and that's not as good as state of the art 2006," Ward says.

what? no 5.1, the originals had 6-track sound for their 70mm engagements. Oh for ****'s sake - oh this just pisses me off, way to go Lucasfilms, the originals - oh finally - no 5.1 sound - thanks a f***ing lot. This news makes me livid.

Funny that it's coming so close to the HD and Blu Ray launches. I remember being pissed that The Special Editions didn't come out on DVD during X-Mas of 97. I was going to buy a player just for them. I ended up making the Laserdisc set my final LD purchase until I bought a DVD player in 99.
Now the lobbying starts for the original 97 special editions on DVD. LOL. Must have ALL versions!
That was sarcasm BTW.

Because in that article, Jim Ward seems to be saying that these are being done from the 1993 video masters that were created for the laserdiscs. In other words, not HD...
I can't see Lucasfilm burning that bridge, that would be the stupidest move in history.
Just becasue a source is old doesn't mean it can not be prepared for HD.

I'm just agitated that I'm going to have to buy the same SEs that I already own in order to get the originals. How is that not a money grubbing move by Lucasfilm?!?
I see everyone giddy over this - did no one buy the SE box some time ago? Does everyone not mind that they are going to have to buy them AGAIN in order to get what we should have had available from the beginning?
Maybe I'm missing something . . .

Just to vent again - this just stinks - the originals with subpar transfers, Fox and LucasFilms can go to hell.
