DTS is on the 2002 cut, not on the original 1982 cut.

Double-checked it myself just a couple months ago.

What are you not understanding here?

You have no issue with buying something and then buying it AGAIN just to get something else you want?

You think you're at a loss for words . . . but I guess this is no different than the people who buy the 20 different versions of the Evil Dead films?!?

No, the E.T. gift set does not have DTS on the theatrical version. Only the individual release.

I seriously doubt they'll be released non-anamorphic. Lucas would be pissing away all the goodwill from the fans that he just earned back.

The degree to which they're restored remains to be seen of course. But if I recall correctly, clips from the original versions were shown in the Empire of Dreams documentary and they looked pretty good. Even if the transfers don't approach the quality of the 2004 SEs, they should be far above the Definitive Collection or Faces laserdiscs.

First dvd release in months I've been excited about. I'm getting it the day of release. Waited so long to get it, since I refused to get the dvd version originally released.

I'll confess that there were times when I considered it; I'd see one, or all, of the SEs for a good price, and I'd think about it.

Then I'd think about all the other movies that I didn't own, movies which I consider better than the special editions of 'Star Wars' and actually would watch, while those would just collect dust on my shelves.

So I said to myself, "I'm 100% sure that Lucas will release those down the line, because it's the only thing he has left to make people buy 'Star Wars' on DVD one more time. If I'm wrong, I will have not owned the compromised 'Star Wars' that I would never watch anyway. If I'm right, I'll be glad to have not bought them and ready for semi-fresh viewings of the proper movies."

The fact that they screwed up at least one of the three SEs anyway actually did help me when I started to get weak and think "Well, I could just buy the two good ones, for now..."

Why only 2.0 sound? Thats only stereo, so the sound will be pretty hollow.
5.1 would be possible, as wasnt a 6 track master created at the time of the originals? It wouldnt be a remix per se, just a sound clean up.

You're the one who's not understanding. What he is saying is, it makes no sense for people to say that they'd be perfectly happy to pay $30 each just for the theatrical versions, but are complaining about spending the same amount and getting the special editions thrown in as well.

He's not wrong, but there are instances where I would pay to get rid of things. Like, if the 'Godfather' box were four discs, and had no 'Godfather III', that would be preferable for me.

I betcha he's doing it because he wants to buy a new yacht or something.

[Lucas' Accountant] "Well George, if you want that new yacht, we'll have to liquidate some assests....or, you could just release another round of Star Wars movies like you do every 5 years or so - I'm sure those suckers will buy them again (and again, and again...)]

Great. So now I can get my nub-nub on.

I prefer the SEs...except for Han shooting first and the one line change from Luke in Empire.

I'd be tempted to buy this set for nostalgia's sake, but I'm not sure I'd ever actually watch it.

I will buy this set just to add them to my current set. But I still enjoy the current SE that are out. They look awesome and sound awesome.

Not sure about this 2.0 only thing.

Yeah, no kidding. My INBOX keeps dinging every 5 minutes with "Reply to post 'Original Star Wars Trilogy Being Re-Released On DVD...The Non-SEs' " notifications.

If I was smart, I would unsubscribe from the thread, there's going to be a lot of bickering from here to September, but I can't stop clicking on the link to go read new posts, it's like watching a car crash, heh.

You weren't the only one: I didn't buy the SE's either. I'm excited about the annoucement (I cross my fingers for some restoration and an anamorphic transfer) and true to my word when I buy the originals I will purchase the SE set as well.

Uh the point is, the current SE's that are out, are included in the release..so there is no need to hold on to them.

Me too! Everytime I felt the urge to buy it, I reminded myself how they screwed up the sound in Episode IV - then, instead of Lucasfilm acknowledging it and fixing it, they proudly defended it as a "creative decision."

It really boiled down to me refusing to endorse an inferior product. I wouldn't do it with anything else, but Star Wars was the biggest temptation to go against my principles. Glad I held firm, threw down that box set and declared I would never give in to the dark side!

So now I wonder - will this release finally fix the sound problems on the SE verison of IV? (No, I'm not holding my breath.)

Lucas talking to advisor: "I just can't figure out why so many people are buying bootleg copies of my original movies - it just doesn't make sense!"

Lucas advisor: "Maybe if you released the originals, George, then people would stop buying the bootlegs."

Lucas: "But those don't exist anymore!"

Advisor: "Uhhh...actually they do. Before you butchered - I meaned enahanced - the original negatives, ILM made a copy so that one day we could release them on DVD"

Lucas: "Wow, I knew I hired those guys for a reason!"

Advisor: "Not only could you put the bootleggers out of business, but with the millions you will make, you can sign Amanda up for Weight Watchers!"

Lucas: "Okay, let's do it then!"

I thought Ep. 7 was released in book form?
I was being far from serious. I knew that Lucas abandoned the idea of 3d in theaters, but, up to yesterday, he also abandoned the idea of releasing the originals. And I didn't know they released Ep. 7 in book form, is the name Cashcow?

I just hope the 2004 discs are identical to the, uh, 2004 discs. With commentary and all. Watch 'em leave the commentaries off, so the completists (suckers) like me have to hang onto them.

And then there's the whole issue of the bonus disc. . .

Mod note: removed, we don't allow those sorts of insults/language directed at a single person and discourge people from using similar language aimed a group

I know some people are grumbling about the "cash grab" aspect of it.
Which I'll never understand. When did it become a sin to make a ton of money in America?

Well, I know Kurtz and Lucas don't like the six-track mix for the original film (which was done first for the premiere and was supposedly a rush-job), although I don't know about ESB and ROTJ -- but then there are so many differences between the 70mm and 35mm versions of the ESB soundtrack (Wikipedia has a nice rundown) that I suspect Lucas wasn't satisfied with the six-track version of that film either. Even then I'm not entirely sure how they could make a 5.1 track from the 70mm audio and still preserve the original mix -- again, I'm not sure about ESB and ROTJ, but ANH had two LFE ("baby boom") channels, so wouldn't they have to mix those down to a single LFE channel, thus resulting in a 4.1 mix?

You gotta admire the chutzpah of George - these releases will be probably be billed as "special features" of the 2004 DVD editions..so George in his little mind can still technically say the original OT were never really released.

Its a shame that due to this little technicality, he probably instructed them not to clean them up as they should be...of course given the problems of the 2004 release, maybe thats a good thing...
