There is plenty, just browsing around at fan made DVD collections, theres massive amounts of bonus material to put on there.

I don't understand the complaining about the new ones including the 2004 Editions. If memory serves MOST of the Special Edition haters said they would not buy the 2004 Special Editions anyway because they didn't INCLUDE the original theatrical releases....So for those that stuck to their guns this should not be a double-dip then, right?

Smells like a ploy to jack up the prices beyond what a single disc would bring.

Personally, these could be two disc sets with Earnest movies and I'd pay full retail. This is truly a DVD dream come true. I can't BELIEVE that now, even when given what we've been clamoring for for 10 fucking years, there are pissers and moaners. "It's not restored enough" "it has 2.0 sound (which is 100000000% appropriate for this release)" "my bootlegs are good enough" "I have to get the 2004 abominations" etc. Unreal.

This is the biggest bombshell announcement in the history of the DVD format, and a fitting way to start to pass the baton to the next generation of media be it HD or BR.

Being born in 1981, and therefore missing the original theatrical run of the trilogy, seeing 'Star Wars' without the "episode IV A New Hope" in the crawl made even me excited at that...to have that on DVD is nothing to complain at. Anamorphic, good stereo sound...sounds great to me!

tommyp007 05-03-06 10:59 PM

Shocked. I'll def be picking these up. Sure would be awesome to have the original posters as artwork. I could do without buying the SE's again, but if its what I gotta do, well, I gotta do.

Julie Walker 05-03-06 11:06 PM

I'm very happy with this news!!

I hated the 1997 SEs and refused to purchase the SE SEs on dvd. So waiting has really paid off in this case!

I see nothing to complain about with this release from the looks of it. Original audio mix, original aspect ratios.........and original theatrical versions. That's all I ever wanted in a Star Wars release!

digitalfreaknyc 05-03-06 11:08 PM

I've been away from the PC all day on vacation.

I think i'm about to piss myself.

I thought this was a joke.

HOLLA!!!

I wonder what type of boxed set this will come in!!

Jimmy 345 05-03-06 11:13 PM

I prefer the new versions but I am still happy the original versions are coming out just to give people what they want and show what at one point was the state of the art effects. Personally even though I enjoyed most of the changes I would love a Special Edition edit where Han Shoots first and Shaw is back as Anakin but everything else like the 2004 edition.

Why do I have to rebuy the 2004 edition. I already own them and don't want to pay for them again.

exharrison 05-03-06 11:13 PM

One purchase on release day and an attempt at one on the first hour of the ddd 20% off sale.

Edit:
This is like the best year for me. They are putting Brisco and Jack on DVD sets. And then I find out about the original trilogy in the same year.

Terrell 05-03-06 11:14 PM

but I doubt they have a lot of "bonus" material that they could put on a second disc.
Oh they have a ton of material. But they'll save that for future SE releases on hi-def.

I think some people are still in shock, and desperately grasping at something to be pissed off at Lucas about. Just give it time. ;)

Jimmy 345 05-03-06 11:20 PM

What are the odds that the special edition version might have even more changes. If the originals are there I am sure fans won't care.

tofferman 05-03-06 11:20 PM

Even if you wanted to sell the 2004 trilogy boxset on ebay, there are so may sets available that you wouldn't get much for them. This is one of those "double dips" (I use that term very very lightly...no flaming please) where you just buy the new set and not complain. Having seen all three films back in their day at the theatre, I will welcome these into my collection finally. It is not too often that I keep more than one dvd of any particular movie, but the original trilogy is an exception to that rule.

Mr.Briggs 05-03-06 11:27 PM

I'll be first in line here for all 3 of them. It would've been my choice not to rebuy the SEs but that's not something I'll cry about.

Hey George, now give us Howard The Duck! We know you don't want to admit its existance but we know better.

DVDChris 05-03-06 11:28 PM

This is great news. Now I'll have both versions of the trilogy.

TomOpus 05-03-06 11:38 PM

I can't wait to get my hands on this.

I just know when I pop in the Star Wars disc, and the "Star Wars" crawl appears across the screen.... I'll shed a tear of happiness.

The Valeyard 05-03-06 11:40 PM

I was in serious fuckin' shock after reading this thread. Now I'm as happy as a little girl.

I never bought the SEs last year and cursed Lucas up and down for not releasing the original versions of the trilogy.

I'm taking all that back now. You hear me, George? I take back every horrible thing I've ever said about you. You've made a believer out of me again!

I'm gonna be the first in line to pick up these releases - Happy to have the originals FINALLY & tolerable enough to have the SE versions too. ANYTHING as long as the originals are there.

Three cheers for Mr. Lucas! THREE CHEERS!

Eplicon 05-03-06 11:48 PM

I guess it was just a matter of time. Lucas conceded to the big fan base for this (i.e., the almighty dollar!). It almost seems not too long ago when he was reluctant to even release any Star Wars films on the then newfangled DVD technology.

I'm just glad to be hearing Boba Fett talking in a menancing voice once again, rather than with that wimpy Kiwi accent.

Aron41 05-03-06 11:53 PM

Just awesome!

So the SEs will be included, eh? So I'm guessing one disc is given for each version. I wouldn't expect many extras.

I must be the only one excited they kept the original 2.0 soundtrack for the theatrical cuts. It preserves the original sound format and that's what I like. :)

Ranger 05-03-06 11:57 PM

Wow. I still really can't believe this news. Some of the changes did bother me, but I still bought the set anyway since it's my favorite triology. I rarely double dip on movies but I might go for this original unchanged set and give the other set to a friend or relative.

Harold Wazzu 05-04-06 12:01 AM

Boy I am so glad it's not April 1st when they decided to make this announcement cuz I still can't believe they are going to release them finally...

Me too, along with Han's early line about getting the "shelter built" as opposed to the revised line "shelter up".

The latter line might make more sense, but sounded like an obvious and bad ADR line.

Eric D. 05-04-06 12:15 AM

Now all we need is Howard the Duck.
