The Wonder Years is in the works!

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!
Here's an update, fellas:
Earlier this month we reported on a cast reunion that occurred in the lead-up to this year's long-awaited DVD release of The Wonder Years - The Complete Series 26-disc collectible set. In the various videos we passed along from StarVista/Time-Life, we saw various stars of the show interact while gearing up to make bonus material for the forthcoming DVD set. However, fans expressed concern that among those star interactions, there weren't any Fred/Danica shots shown. Well of COURSE the studio doesn't want to spill all their beans at once! Gotta save something for the actual viewing experience, right? But still, they don't want fans to worry too much, so this morning StarVista/Time-Life sent out the below email to their mailing list of fans who've signed up (see button link below, over the package art) to express interest in buying this title from the studio. Here's the entire email, including images both old and new, straight from the studio:
Reunited!!!
Fred Savage (Kevin) and Danica McKellar (Winnie) reunited last month for our Wonder Years DVD bonus features shoot and we got some great pictures in the process!
Check out Kevin and Winnie... both Then and Now!

You'd have to be an ultra, ultra fan to pay $500 for a signed set...it's not like any of those actors are going to win an Oscar someday. I wonder if they'll even sell all those copies at that price? And if it's $500 for a signed set, how much is the non-signed set going to be? $250?!

So has it already been confirmed that every piece of original music from the show's broadcast run will be in tact? Or are they adding in a handful of new pieces because they couldn't sure all the rights?

Yeah good luck selling that for $500. You really need to be a die hard fan to spend that kind of money. Pretty sure the cheap bastards in this forum aren't touching it. Honestly for that kind of money, I'd rather get a new IPad or an XBox One with some games. At least you'll get more long term benefits from those than a signed DVD set.
I too think the regular set will be around $250.

I'm almost certain they cleared the overwhelming majority but hit a wall on a handful of songs.

If Time Life hasn't explicity stated already that all songs are included, I'm going to bet some were changed. It's a huge selling point and for them not to mention it if it were true sounds fishy!

$500

No way that is going to sell in the numbers they're hoping. I was expecting about $200 to $250 for the set and will probably bite at that price but $500 is laughable.

So do you think they will release a set without all the locker packaging? And how much do you think that'd be... $150. I just am not interested in all that extra stuff.

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!
This is most likely it through the Time/Life site but eventually they will be released as individual season sets as they have with China Beach and The Six Million Dollar Man.

I'm on a holding pattern for this one. $250 is too steep for me...especially for DVD (it it were Blu-ray, I might consider it). Hopefully, we'll see a version or sale down the road that is about $100 less.
Also, their latest press release says that "over 300 songs" have been cleared...but the phrasing also seems to indicate that there are songs that weren't cleared. Someone can probably figure out the number if they know the average number of songs that appeared in each episode...3 or 4, perhaps? So that would mean there's about 50 to 100 songs that DIDN'T get cleared? Or do you guys think the number of new songs per episode is more like 2?
I'm not a huge fan, so I don't know how many were repeated during the run, either (other than the theme song, of course).

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. got a full series release but no season sets.
All of those releases are less expensive (some significantly so) than their Time-Life price.
I saw the packaging for the set on TVShowsondvd.com and find it to be horrid! Another "premium" release put in those crappy, prone to scratch/damage discs, envelope page "books." For the asking price I expected far better. While I want the show the packaging is a total deal breaker for me. I'll wait for a non-exclusive release/version and hope for better packaging.

Their prices are expensive but they easily put the best DVDs out of any company. The quality of that set as well as Get Smart are the best out of any DVD box that I own.

Personally, I think the music was absolutely integral to this show. And although I appreciate the work they did to clear the music, and to provide all the updated interviews...it's not the same show without the original music.
I guess it's fine if you haven't watched the show since 1995. You may not remember it all. But I remember major scenes from this show, and while I may not remember the exact music cue that played at that moment, I think I'll recognize that something is off if that music has been replaced.
If anything would keep me from buying this at any point (I don't even buy DVD's anymore, so anything I did buy would have to be really special), it would be this.

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!
I think 3 songs per episode is a safe estimation. From what I recall, I think the show would often open with a background song, have one towards end end of an episode, and then sometimes have one at the mid-point.

So here we are with The Wonder Years, perhaps one of my most loved shows of childhood asking $250. If all the music is intact this most likely is a reasonable price, but it if not 100%, which is more likely the case, then how much of the music is original? And is it still worth $250 if one, two or a handful of songs no longer remain? Things that make you go "hmmmmm....."

I counted up the songs used from the orignials and it's around 321. So, if they cleared over 300 then they are very close to a complete set.
Some episodes had no music (except for the theme) while others had 9-10 tracks used.
The 321 number does not include the theme music for each episode.

Take Daria, for example. There's no way that show would have ever been released on DVD without replacing a majority of the music. But was I going to let that stop me from getting the show when it was finally released on DVD? Hell no, because it's a great show and I'd rather have it without the music than not have it at all.
If The Wonder Years has managed to secure more than 93% of the music that originally aired, then I'd consider that a huge success and would hope people don't let the fact that it's less than 100% stop them from getting the set.
