Judging by the specs listed on Davis DVD, this release appears to be another 'kiddie-ized' version of one of Disney animation relases (along the lines of Disney's most recent releases of The Emperor's New Groove and Tarzan). Notice that absence of the following features from the 60th Anniversary Edition: Audio Commentary Exclusive Look At Dumbo II Dumbo Art Gallery - Rare and Never-Before-Seen Concept Art Original Walt Disney TV Introduction Sound Design: Creating The Voice Of "Casey Jr." Publicity Materials DVD-ROM Weblinks Ignoring the obligatory plug for Dumbo II and the DVD-ROM Weblinks, there is a lot missing from this newest release if the specs listed on Davis DVD are the complete ones for the Big Top Edition, I know, don't get me started on that name. :( I think I will be sticking with the original release in this case unless there is a major improvement in the transfer and/or the original soundtrack is included, which it doesn't look like it is. |

When you've been around for six years doing a DVD news website, you might have one or two readers that send you information and --gasp!-- stock holder PDFs. I didn't steal anyone's news story. In fact, I posted the first specs for the disc four days ago and I have the only hi-res art for the set from any of the news sites. http://www.davisdvd.com/images/covers_big/dumbo.jpg If you don't like me or my site, that's fine. Just don't bash me for stuff that's not true. Between my school and work schedules, I work too fucking hard to bring DVD news on a (semi) daily basis. I also seem to recall you, or someone from ultimatedisney, emailing me and practically begging to find out how I had access to Disney DVD info -- to which I politely told you that I had multiple sources in the video retail industry. Just because I wouldn't share those avenues of information isn't any reason to bash me now. Goddammit, what a fucking bummer of a way to start the day! |
Since disney has not put out an official press release, no one knows what is new and what is missing. However If Dumbo 2 truly was scrapped, then chances are that is long gone. True, official specs have not been released yet, however I think I see a pattern forming here, and it isn't one I am particularly found of either. |
^agreed. For the most part, Disney has been consistent in putting out great dvd's of their feature films. I was major discouraged with the Tarzan/Emporer situation last year, as they already had plenty of material that simply got left behind. Stack that with the treasures video quality, and the simple bad job with the muppet releases...Disney has given me plenty of grief lately.
I still say that their Platinum line is one of the best in the dvd business. Some great extras in their. I do plan on keeping my old Dumbo...the video quality will help me decided if I should own two copies. And Patrick, show some cheer. I love your website (and have always championed it on this board for as long as I remember) You bring great news on a daily basis, and don't deserve the grief. |

BTW, ultimatedisney has released the official specs for this DVD.
Disney has issued press releases for June's major DVD releases. The Dumbo: Big Top Edition doesn't sound so big; it will lose the audio commentary, two trailers, Michael Crawford music video, and Reluctant Dragon excerpt from the recently-discontinued 60th Anniversary Edition DVD, though its new digital transfer is said to "provide a pristine visual experience for a new generation of fans." http://www.ultimatedisney.com/dumbo-...ssrelease.html Based on this, I will definitely not be buying this release unless there are some major improvements to the presentation. I was about to sell my Dumbo 60th Anniversary Edition on Ebay until I read that a new digital transfer may be the only advantage of the upcoming release, and a new transfer is too vague. I'll have to wait until after it's released and there is a review (ultimatedisney will probably be the first) to make a decision.
Speaking of this weird trend, I noticed Lady and the Tramp II is also being re-released, and the specs for the disc seemed about the same as the last one except maybe they added a game or two. This makes it even harder to know if a new release offers enough to be worthwhile, and when you have to wait until after release date to get specs/reviews to make your decision, then the resale value on the old one plummets. Fox is coming out with yet another slew of 2-DVD re-releases of previous 2-DVD releases like Butch Cassidy and Patton and the 1-DVD release of Tora Tora Tora. From the limited specs I couldn't tell if any of these 3 offered anything new and significantly better... just a handful of featurettes perhaps. |
Butch and Sundance, and Tora Tora Tora never have had 2 discers before. Tora has never even had a anamorphic transfer....

I hate to break it to everyone who read the review, but the "Celebrating Dumbo" featurette was on the original 60th Anniversary disc as well. It is NOT a 'new' addition, as the reviewer would have you believe.
So there are no new extras--not for adults, anyway--on this Big Top Edition. Unless you have kids, I would hang on to the original disc if you still own it. I plan to. |

I already own the 60th anniversary edition. What's the general consensus on upgrading? I mean the picture quality is better in most aspects. The disc loses some special features. What does everyone think? |
Well, if the pic quality is indeed improved, then I will be upgrading...Special features are nice, but lower on my list of priorities, but thats just me.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the old version looks better? The colors are way more vibrant. Plus there is some significant cropping on the top part of the frame on the Big Top Edition.
