Dumbo: Special Edition -- 06/13/06
As per ultimatedisney.com:
While it's still not clear how many discs or what improvements it will boast, Dumbo: Special Edition has been pegged for June 13th. |
excellent!
|
Good news. Thanks.
|
This would have to have some really cool extras for me to upgrade from the 60th Anniversary edition.
|
i havent watched my 60th anniv. edition in a long time, there's nothing wrong with the transfer or anything is there that an upgrade would be necessary?
|
a household favorite....i'm in
|
Another Disney upgrade on the list...

Tough to imagine what could be added. I thought the transfer was great and the documentary that was included was superb. Covered just about every aspect of the film and made me love it even more.
|
Great! I didn't get around to picking up the current 60th anniv edition, so I'll just wait for this one.
|
Maybe this'll finally be the uncut Dumbo with all of the scenes with the crows intact?
I really doubt it though. |
I'll get this for my son.
|
If they're doing a Special Edition of Dumbo, I can only hope for a Black Cauldron SE.
Talk about a disc that needs improvement. |
If there are lots of fun extras, you can count me in. I love this movie so.

Dumbo has always been uncut. Some idiots tried to spread a rumor that footage was cut after the 1941 release when the original DVD came out.

I am curious why they are releasing Dumbo again? I can understand if the 60th Anniversity is out of print but it is not....I am not sure which to get but if both have different extras, I will be getting both but if both have the same extras but the special edition has a new transfer and DTS, I will be getting the special edition but how is the transfer on the 60th Anniversity?

Yeah, some idiot named Glenn Erickson (aka DVD Savant). I'm sorry, but I'll take his word on this matter over yours any day of the week: "You might not be aware that several minutes were snipped from DUMBO so long ago that nobody remembers them. In a very fluid movie, you'll note quite a number of sudden fade outs and fades-ins right in the middle of music cues. Well .... there were several scenes with the jive-talking crows - the ones who are NOT black stereotypes, just cool cats who are the hippest bunch in the movie. They showed it to us at UCLA about 1973, and in the print we saw, the crows show up at regular intervals to comment like a Greek chorus on the events of the film - criticizing the elephants mostly, and feeling sorry for Mrs. Jumbo and Dumbo. And they were funny. But since they're cool characters, talkin' jive, they had to go! In the cut print shown now, the crows barely show up to teach Dumbo how to fly with the magic feather.(Savant always loved the REAL moral of DUMBO: if you wanna fly, you gotta get drunk!) Disney = CONTROL FREAKS. They don't cotton to competition, and they are lousy sports. And they have Zero appreciation for their own history, unless it means money in their pockets. This probably doesn't make them much different from any other studio - but Disney is the one that always seems to be out there bowdlerizing their animation and passing it off as whole. I’ve heard rumors that the 64-minute edition here represents an edited cut of the film. Allegedly the black crows received much more screen time in the original rendition as they acted as a form of Greek chorus and commented on events. According to this concept, they were cut because of racial considerations; the crows were viewed as negative stereotypes so most of their material was sacrificed to the gods of political correctness. These alleged edits were made decades ago, which is why virtually no one remembers the original material. There’s no reference to any deleted footage anywhere on the DVD, and I looked through some Disney sources and could find no mention of this editing. The only person I could discover who made this claim was the “DVD Savant”, who stated in May 2000 that he saw the footage at a college screening back in the early Seventies. In support of his case, the Savant mentions a number of fairly abrupt fade-outs that occur during the film. I can’t argue with these, as the movie indeed does include some awkward shifts. However, these don’t prove anything. Was Dumbo butchered from its original length? Maybe, but at this point, I consider Disney innocent until proven guilty. I’ve consulted plenty of sources that make no mention of the change, and if one considers the magnitude of the alleged alteration, this would be a bizarre oversight by all those people. Even documentation of a longer running time would show something, but everyone states the movie lasted 63 and a half minutes. As such, right now I lean to the side that feels Dumbo wasn’t edited. One claim that the film was cut that comes based on decades-old memories doesn’t do much for me since I can find no other verification of the changes. These alterations may well have occurred, but until I discover more compelling evidence, I’ll stick with the belief that the DVD presents the original, unedited film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033563/trivia Walt Disney's distributor, RKO Radio Pictures, had qualms about releasing this 64-minute feature as a major motion picture. They tried to persuade Disney to either cut it to short-subject length, extend it to at least 70 minutes, or have it released as a B picture. Disney stood his ground, and the film was released as an A picture as Disney intended. Also, the imdb doesn't even list the additional crow scenes in its "alternate versions" link for the film. |

Keep in mind, Disney does have a track record for editing much of their work, such as Fantasia, 3 Little Pigs and many others - so this isn't too far out of left field for them - also, lets not forget a little film called Song of the South...

Strong disagreement - while SOTS may have not been "edited", per se, the fact that Disney refuses to acknwoledge its existence, in order to "not offend", speaks to the same issue that leads them to cut material in the first place. So there's little, if any, difference.
|
I thought the 60th anniversary edition looked fine. I'll see what this has before making a final decision. I wish Disney would hurry up and release an anamorphic Hercules.

It probably is just a re-release, like Tarzan.
|
It's interesting that Blockbuster is offering $20 for a lot of the gold collection DVDs like Peter Pan & Lady & the Tramp. If they offer $20 next week for Dumbo I'm taking it! I only paid $10 for my copy and that was like 4 or 5 years ago. So I'll totally get rid of it to upgrade to a new version.

" http://www.dvdtalk.com/dvdsavant/s113falco1.html I'm appalled that Erickson would make obviously false claims like this, when no other historian has ever mentioned the cut footage. Come on... it's so obvious that it's bullshit. Why would there be almost no evidence of the crows being cut out while it's well known about the cuts in Fantasia and other films? What would basically have to happen is this: Disney has to revise every vintage document about the runtime. They have to somehow alter UCLA's archival 1941 print. They have to destroy any evidence pointing to this. Yeah, right. The fact that Dumbo was barely long enough to be a feature in the 1941 release really makes the claim even less likely. I just want to know why Glenn Erickson would put that in a review when everyone knows it's false. And about Song of the South. Do you even research ANYTHING about Disney? They've included a lot of footage from the film on DVD's. Several Disneyland episodes included in the Treasures sets or other DVD's use plenty of clips - even some with James Baskett as Uncle Remus. Scott McQueen mentioned in an American Cinematographer interview that Song of the South was fully restored a few years ago. Stop trying to make Disney into some sort of shadow conspiracy. They're not THAT secretive. |

Dumbo and Treasure Planet are now OOP More than anything I think this is just a new way to market Dumbo 2 which will be coming down the pipeline a little later in the year. This rebuilds interest in the charachter, and creates a rush for the title. I do however hope that they beef up the extras with a commentary, and not just a lame re-hash like Tarzan of Emporers new groove. Plenty to read on Dumbo 2 in Disney sequels are coming. Lots of them. and since song of the south has been brought up, (if you didn't already know) chances are looking very good that it will be happening before years end. Great Articles posted...take the time to read... New Song of the South info and articles |

   That still is not other site's news like you previously posted. And investor's newsletters are made for the public, so Patrick is not doing anything wrong, specially since he is doing a news site. And by the way, Ultimatedisney.com was the one that broke the story of this release several weeks ago. |
