I thought the 60th anniversary edition looked fine. I'll see what this has before making a final decision. I wish Disney would hurry up and release an anamorphic Hercules.

Except in those cases, there's documented proof of the edits. Everyone knows of those edits, and what was removed. In this case, there's no sources outside of DVDSavant, who is relying on memory.

It probably is just a re-release, like Tarzan.

It's interesting that Blockbuster is offering $20 for a lot of the gold collection DVDs like Peter Pan & Lady & the Tramp. If they offer $20 next week for Dumbo I'm taking it! I only paid $10 for my copy and that was like 4 or 5 years ago. So I'll totally get rid of it to upgrade to a new version.

I'm sorry, but I'll take his word on this matter over yours any day of the week:

"You might not be aware that several minutes were snipped from DUMBO so long ago that nobody remembers them. In a very fluid movie, you'll note quite a number of sudden fade outs and fades-ins right in the middle of music cues. Well .... there were several scenes with the jive-talking crows - the ones who are NOT black stereotypes, just cool cats who are the hippest bunch in the movie. They showed it to us at UCLA about 1973, and in the print we saw, the crows show up at regular intervals to comment like a Greek chorus on the events of the film - criticizing the elephants mostly, and feeling sorry for Mrs. Jumbo and Dumbo. And they were funny. But since they're cool characters, talkin' jive, they had to go! In the cut print shown now, the crows barely show up to teach Dumbo how to fly with the magic feather.(Savant always loved the REAL moral of DUMBO: if you wanna fly, you gotta get drunk!)

Disney = CONTROL FREAKS. They don't cotton to competition, and they are lousy sports. And they have Zero appreciation for their own history, unless it means money in their pockets.

This probably doesn't make them much different from any other studio - but Disney is the one that always seems to be out there bowdlerizing their animation and passing it off as whole. "

Well, he's still wrong. UCLA's database shows that they have a vintage 1941 nitrate 35mm print and it's 64 minutes long. Documents from print published in 1941-1942 say it's 64 minutes long.

I'm appalled that Erickson would make obviously false claims like this, when no other historian has ever mentioned the cut footage. Come on... it's so obvious that it's bullshit. Why would there be almost no evidence of the crows being cut out while it's well known about the cuts in Fantasia and other films? What would basically have to happen is this: Disney has to revise every vintage document about the runtime. They have to somehow alter UCLA's archival 1941 print. They have to destroy any evidence pointing to this. Yeah, right.

The fact that Dumbo was barely long enough to be a feature in the 1941 release really makes the claim even less likely.

I just want to know why Glenn Erickson would put that in a review when everyone knows it's false.

And about Song of the South. Do you even research ANYTHING about Disney? They've included a lot of footage from the film on DVD's. Several Disneyland episodes included in the Treasures sets or other DVD's use plenty of clips - even some with James Baskett as Uncle Remus. Scott McQueen mentioned in an American Cinematographer interview that Song of the South was fully restored a few years ago. Stop trying to make Disney into some sort of shadow conspiracy. They're not THAT secretive.

Oh but it is, and I told you about it months ago and no one seemed to listen...

Dumbo and Treasure Planet are now OOP

More than anything I think this is just a new way to market Dumbo 2 which will be coming down the pipeline a little later in the year. This rebuilds interest in the charachter, and creates a rush for the title. I do however hope that they beef up the extras with a commentary, and not just a lame re-hash like Tarzan of Emporers new groove. Plenty to read on Dumbo 2 in

Disney sequels are coming. Lots of them.

and since song of the south has been brought up, (if you didn't already know) chances are looking very good that it will be happening before years end. Great Articles posted...take the time to read...

If it is out of point, how come I see Dumbo 60th Anniversity on Amazon.com?

That still is not other site's news like you previously posted. And investor's newsletters are made for the public, so Patrick is not doing anything wrong, specially since he is doing a news site. And by the way, Ultimatedisney.com was the one that broke the story of this release several weeks ago.

Wow, missed that. I may run that commentary tommorow. Thanks.

Remaining stock. OOP means they are not making any new copies, and will not ship out anymore copies to retailers. Disney (specifically) also usually ask for remaining stock back, however it is up to the retailer to return it. Amazon is just selling the remainder.

It seems that the DVD name has changed to Dumbo: Big Top Edition

From DavisDVD.com:
Buena Vista Home Entertainment will release Dumbo: Big Top Edition on June 6th. Disney's beloved flyiing pachyderm returns in this all new set featuring a newly remastered digital fullscreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. Bonus materials will include the "Celebrating Dumbo "featurette", "Elmer Elephant" and the "Flying Mouse" bonus shorts, "Dumbo's Big Discovery" DVD Storybook, DisneyPedia "My First Circus" game, sing-along songs, "Baby Mine" music video by Jim Brickman and Kassie DePaiva and Matching Game learning cards. Retail is $29.99.
A small sample of the DVD cover is located below on the link.

And this is from ultimatedisney.com:
March 10, 2006 - Since a trailer first showed up on January's Funny Factory DVDs, people have been wondering, "Why is Dumbo receiving a new Special Edition?", "Will it be worth it to upgrade?", and so on. As posted earlier, Disney is expected to issue a full press release for this June 6th release (now being dubbed "Big Top Edition") soon, but we've managed to scrounge up some details on this single-disc re-release. While as usual there is a large open-ended "And More!", preliminary specs suggest the primary attraction may be a "New Digital Transfer." Beyond that, not much sounds new and what does isn't especially exciting. Slipcover packaging, "learning cards" for a matching game, a music video for Jim Brickman and Kassie DePaiva's "Baby Mine", and DisneyPedia: "My First Circus" are all additions. The remaining extras being touted -- the featurette "Celebrating Dumbo", a "Dumbo's Big Discovery" DVD Storybook, Sing-Along Songs, and the shorts "Elmer Elephant" and "The Flying Mouse" -- all appeared on the 60th Anniversary Edition DVD, released in October 2001. That first disc also offered a John Canemaker audio commentary, Walt Disney's TV introduction, two trailers, a sound design excerpt, an art gallery, a look at the apparently-abandoned Dumbo II, and a Michael Crawford music video of "Baby Mine." It's unclear if any of the remaining bonuses will be ported over, but hopefully the forthcoming announcement should clarify. Even if it does, this may be one to await a picture quality review on before being deemed an improvement.

Isn't Disney afraid the black crows in the movie might offend people?

Man, to hell with Dumbo - I am still waiting for a decent release of Pinocchio to hit the shelves.

I think the OAR is fullscreen, so is the 60th Anniversary edition.

There are a lot of interesting tagents in this thread to be sure. That being said, let me add another, which is more in-line with the initial topic of this thread.

Judging by the specs listed on Davis DVD, this release appears to be another 'kiddie-ized' version of one of Disney animation relases (along the lines of Disney's most recent releases of The Emperor's New Groove and Tarzan). Notice that absence of the following features from the 60th Anniversary Edition:

Audio Commentary
Exclusive Look At Dumbo II
Dumbo Art Gallery - Rare and Never-Before-Seen Concept Art
Original Walt Disney TV Introduction
Sound Design: Creating The Voice Of "Casey Jr."
Publicity Materials
DVD-ROM Weblinks

Ignoring the obligatory plug for Dumbo II and the DVD-ROM Weblinks, there is a lot missing from this newest release if the specs listed on Davis DVD are the complete ones for the Big Top Edition, I know, don't get me started on that name.

I think I will be sticking with the original release in this case unless there is a major improvement in the transfer and/or the original soundtrack is included, which it doesn't look like it is.

Disney's first widescreen film was Lady & the Tramp, released in 1955. Everything prior is full screen.

Dumbo was released in 1941.

Now Disney has started with the super-cool edition names too? Why do they all think this a great marketing gimmick? Are there actually people who like these stupid names? What's next, Criterion rolling out: "The Seven Samurai: Slice 'Em, Dice 'Em Edition" or "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: Totally Baked Edition?" Stop the madness!
