I was in the warehouse (cheap nz store) and was looking at dvds and saw Castaway going for 14$. and i was so close to buying it until my mate said
"dont you already have this?"
and i realised that i did!

It's happened to me twice. Both time were from the $5.50 bin at Wal-Mart. First title was Murder At 1600 and the other was Maximum Risk. I realized it before I had opened either one so I simply returned them.

Of all movies, it was Red Corner. I bought it on half.com, looked for a movie to watch, and found it. I emailed the seller, and he was nice enough to refund my money and not ship. With that movie, I'd have deleted the email and be happy with my $3.

I've also bought a few doubles for investments, either OOP or special editions I get good deals on.

Happens to a friend all the time. He said, "If a movie looked good enough to buy in the past, chances are it still looks good enough to buy today." Now he carries a list of his collection around with him when he goes dvd bargain hunting. But even that is not enough, he gets sloppy and doesn't always check the list...

Not yet.

But I've had DVDs arrive from Deep Discount DVD that I had forgotten that I ordered many weeks earlier.

I have about 1700 DVD's in my collection. I've ordered duplicates several times. Now, I refer to my film database spreadsheet before making a purchase. Its become a boring, but effective science.

I preordered something twice. I didn't realize until I got the shipping notice from the first place, but it was already too late to stop the second from shipping.

happens more than i'd like to admit. returns and exchanges are 2 much of a hassle so i just toss them in a box set aside for last minute gifts for friends/coworkers/family.

So far, so good here. Can't say it will always be like that, though. But for now, I've never had to think twice about remember if I owned a dvd or not.

Several times.

Grabbed Beverly Hills Cop 2 by mistake when I meant to grab 3.

Bought a WWE DVD out of Media Play's previously viewed bin, drove 45 minutes home and found I had it already (which is now why I keep a list in my wallet of what WWE DVD's I have).

Bought the Frankenstein Legendary Monsters collection when what I really needed was the Wolfman collection. Opened it up at work before I got home and realized I already had it. Oops.

out of my 1500+ DVD's just once...I bought Girlfight during the June 05 DDD.com 20% Off sale. I checked if I bought it during the Nov Sale and I didn't. So I bought it again at Columbia House to get my order over $30 for the $5 coupon. So now I have 2 FS copies of Girl Fight

Nope. I've got around 550 titles, but I still have a good idea of what I own. The only thing that ever gets a little muddy are the Fox Film Noir titles. I'm working towards getting them all, but having never seen any of them, I do have to doublecheck which ones I do in fact own before picking up another one or two.

As an aside, this probably should've gone in the main DVD forum.

At least 20 times

I sometimes catch the mistake within the 30 day return period, but if not it makes a good gift come Christmas time usually.

No, but I passed on some purchases because I thought I already had it. Then when I get home I don't see it. I must've had it at some point and sold/traded it.

hasn't happened to me yet. and I certainly hope it doesn't happen ever. it would put a big wrench in my "Bargain" purchase.

Yes, several times. I've only got 700 or so DVDs, but I've been buying since '99, so, sometimes I forget what I've got. I just alphabetized all of'em and checked them against my Excel list; shouldn't happen again.

I've got about ~1500 titles, and this has never happened. I honestly can't understand how this could happen to someone who is a serious collector.

It's happened to me a few times. Just this week I made a trade with someone for a movie I already owned. I thought I owned it and checked my profiler link, but it wasn't there so I traded for it. Next time I looked at profiler, there it was, must have just overlooked it. Sucks.
