Even worse, not getting something you "think" you have.

Just recently I had ordered the Above The Law/Hard To Kill DVD from DDD for like $8.98. But then later on I saw Above the Law by itself for $4.99 at J&R.com and ordered it thinking I didn't have it (I must have thought the double feature disc I had was some other Stephen Seagal three-word titled movie like Out For Justice or Marked For Death) I only realized my mistake after I took another look at the double feature disc I already owned (next time, look BEFORE you order - D-uh!). Now it would cost nearly as much to mail it back as it did to buy it so I put it up on Half.com but it hasn't sold yet (I guess I'm the only one who likes early Segal movies).

Yep. I sometimes forget if I saw a flick by renting it, seeing it on HBO etc. or because I already owned it.

I think I've done it twice, both times on titles I obviously don't watch often enough to know that I have it already.

Nope. Never done it. Don't see how I could.

I buy movies that I really, really like. That mean something to me. So once I have it, I know I have it. If I see it again in a store, those things in my brain that store memory fire off and tell me I already own it.

If I were to forget I owned a movie, odds are that movie wasn't memorable enough for me to buy in the first place.

Nope! I'm at about 300 DVDs and know what I do and don't have.

Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing being able to do that though.

During one of DDD's 20% off sales, I ordered the same DVD in 2 separate orders and didn't realize it until I received the different shipments. From that time on during those sales, I just wait and make one big order instead of a few smaller ones.

Yep, another Wal-Mart bin victim here. Bought "No Escape" (that Ray Liotta prison-jungle movie) for $5.88. Then a few months down the road Wal-mart had a 3 for $9.99 deal. I only wanted two DVD's so I figured I may get each one for $3.33 each. Well I was in line waiting to check out and saw that a person in front of me got only two as well and they rang up at $5.88 apiece.

So I ran back to the bin, saw "No Escape" there on to, said to myself, I don't have this and grabbed it for my third movie and I even wounded up watching it that night. (Didn't even watch the others until a week or so later) Then a few days later, I found the other copy in a box with some other $5.88 DVDs. It was open (although I know I didn't watch it-probably just checked it to see if the DVD worked) so I couldn't return that copy. Wounded up giving one of them to a friend.

LB...

Way of the gun.
Bought it on R1, lent it to someone and never got it back. Bought it again on R2 then couldn't find it. Tried looking and saw it cheap in a store. When I got home I found it. Turns out I was looking out for the R1 cover where the R2 cover is a different cover. Thats how I missed it.

Only once, and at Wal-Mart in the $5.50 bin. I totally forgot I owned Mr.Jones on dvd, and they had it nicely in there for $5.50, and I bought it. I did return it though, unopened since I had a feeling when I got home that I had this someplace hidden. It was an honest mistake on my part.

Wow... I can honestly say I didn't even think this could be possible. I could own 3000 DVDs and not forget what I own.

It's never happened to me, probably never will. I can't imagine how it could happen.

I've never done this. For some reason I have an uncanny ability to automatically know which titles I have. If I see it or hear the title, I can give an instant answer whether I have it or not. And I also know if I've watched the DVD or not.

I'm the same way. Anyone who's really *into* their hobby can probably do the same. As I'm one of the many who collect Criterion dvds, I can usually spout off the director, and sometimes even the spine number.

It's the same way with people with other hobbies, whether it's comic books or sports cards.

I understand forgetting what movies you have or don't have if you are someone who buys dvd's and then sells them.

A couple movies I don't remember if I have or not, because I may have sold them, but I've never made the mistake of purchasing a movie twice.

Textbooks on the other hand....last semester for school, I purchased 3 copies of the same book at $100 each. I purchased one online before school started, then I purchased one in the bookstore because I forgot I purchased it online, finally I purchased it a 3rd time online because I thought I was buying a book for another class and the classes were so similar that the titles were almost identical.

I did this once, but the movies had different titles. I forget exactly what it was though. It may have been Satanic Rites of Dracula that I owned and I picked up Dracula and His Vampire Bride. Somehow I figured out that they were the same movie before opening the new one and returned it.

I ordered an Anchor Bay Fright Pack from DVD Pacific and it arrived no problems, then the next day, the same one arrived again. I'd totally forgotten I had pre-ordered it and then while online thought "I need to get that" and ordered it again. One and only time I've done this.

Yup. At the top right hand corner of your dvd list there should be a link called "pda helper" that will tell you everything you need to know. I use a text only link for my phone since the images really slow everything down.

Me too! I did this with Where Eagles Dare when I saw it in the Wal-Mart $5.50 bin. I thought for sure that I already had it only to get home and discover that my mind was playing tricks on me. The sad thing is, I still don't own it because I haven't been able to find it at that price since.

This is where my memory system gets really quirky. I can barely remember one liners, funny aspects and quotes from a movie, but I know every movie I own (about 640), which version and have never bought an identical movie on DVD. Now, if I could strike a better balance between that and one liners, it be a helluva lot more fun talking about movies with people.

I bought Bourne Identity (original release) from work by mistake when I had already pre-ordered it from DDD.
