You might think that, but you'd be wrong. DVDs can and do have different bar codes. Usually to distinguish the type of security device in the DVD. Sometimes to distinguish those that come with bonus DVDs.

Who received a 'full screen' dvd for Christmas?

My Family's tradition is to open gifts on Christmas Eve, so I've already seen my gifts.

I received Toy Story and Office Space (w/Flare), now it's hard to mess up a Disney film so Toy Story was in the clear, but of course Office Space SE, while being glad they chose the correct edition, they picked-up a 'Full Screen' version... the family said it was the only copy available...

The joke about how many different SE versions ('unrated') of dvd's are available has been discussed on this thread:
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=448864
I think the joke is on us; the studios get their unwarranted profit from people making mistakes.

Just wondering of how many of you recieved a Full Screen (or an awful/outdated edition) of a DVD this Christmas? And will you return/exchange it?

If someone bought me fullscreen I'd probably try and exchange it. I'm pretty anal about the whole WS / FS stuff, so my friends now always to buy WS.

I got a fullscreen of Batman Begins 1 disc edition, but I had already bought the Deluxe 2 disc Edition a few months ago. Luckily, I was able to exchange it at Target (they accept exchanges on DVD's with no receipts)

My son got the FS version of Sky High...I thought about returning it, but I don't really think he'll be that anal about it since he's only 5.

I received a FS DVD for Christmas...

Of course, it was Lifeboat and full screen just happens to be its OAR.

If I had received a FS DVD for Christmas of a film that was shot in widescreen, then I would certainly be returning it on 12/26. No FS DVD will stay in my collection...

I find that most of the barcodes are found on the individual stores' price tag stickers.

I often pick up a DVD from a retail store while I am awaiting the same title's arrival from DDD. Once said title arrives in the mail, I peel the stickers off the shrinkwrap and place them on the unopened one, then bring back for a refund. This has worked at Borders, Barnes & Nobles, and Walmart thus far, saving me hundreds of dollars over the years.

My mother in law bought me 'Up in Smoke' and wrote on the plastic wrap in giant permanent ink letters ' LOOK, IT'S WIDESCREEN!!'...Unfortunately it's a Cheech and Chong movie which sucks no matter how you watch it.

Generally, for the first week after Christmas, most retail stores are pretty lax when it comes to returns/exchanges as long as the item is unopened/still sealed.

Especially with exchanges. The idea is, if that no matter where it may have come from originally, they figure that if you came to them, you want to do business with them. So they'd just as soon take back something that may have come from somewhere else, if it means they've still got you as a customer - and, they hope that you'll also spend additional money with them while you're there. Even if you only get a credit slip, you still have to return to 'that' store sometime to use it, so they are still getting your future buisness.

I got tricked with this one. As I was opening everything, I noticed the Full Screen on the security sticker and had a small moment of panic since I'd already broken the seal. Then I noticed it was Lifeboat which should be full screen anyway. I thought it was odd that they pointed out that fact since there isn't a widescreen version anyway.

I got the wrong version of The Lost Boys from my father-in-law. I thought about just keeping it (and would have if it was just extra bonus features), but several reviews said there was a dramatic increase in picture quality with the new version. They gave me a small amount of grief since it was an ancient DVD and the shrinkwrap was torn in a few places. But I said it was un-opened and held my ground.

My wife made the mistake once of getting me a Fool Screen DVD. I returned it the next day.

All the DVDs I got for Christmas this year wereTV shows and they only come it one format.
