I got the full screen version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith at our work party. Still waiting on that person to find the receipt so I can exchange it.
If it's still shrink-wrapped I doubt you would need a receipt to do a straight up exchange for a WS copy unless it was somewhere goofy like Walmart that sometimes charges different prices for WS and FS counterparts.

just ask her if she has the receipt because you tried to play it and it skipped or froze so you need the receipt to exchange for another one.

I got a copy of Scarface FS from a friend, however, because my friend watches a lot of movies, I just kindof assumed that he would know to go for the WS, so I just opened the dvd without even thinking, popped the DVD in, and found out it was FS.

I know, stupid on my part, I'll just have to run to WM one of these days and take advantage of their generous exchange policy.

I gave my mom my DDD wishlist and told her when the 20% sale was going on.. So, there's absolutely no way she could mess things up, and the stuff on my wishlist only had one version available.

Well, I just got one today from someone who always gets me gift cards. Naturally, it's one that not only has two versions, but the right one doesn't cost the same: The Great Raid.

If I take it back and add the difference to do it, will they do the exchange?

In this case I wouldn't blame your friend, if memory serves, the only difference between the WS and FS Scarface is tiny print on the spine of the DVD. The cover is identical.

I'm guessing this time of year, there are thousands of people returning DVDs without the receipt. In my experience if it's still shrinkwrapped almost any store will accept it and give you cash.

I give a list with way more than I'd expect (like 5x), so that I can still be surprised, and whenever there are multiple versions, I look up exactly what's on the cover. Whatever the cover describes is how I describe. And they also know, if there's any doubt if it's the right one, they should try a different one.

Makes the whole thing much simpler.

You all should just ask for gift certificates and then you can just go and pick up the DVDs yourself. Most of my family gives eachother gift certificates to Best Buy instead of actual DVDs.

Ditto, it is a lot nicer looking than just a regular list as well.

that was one of my options. i figured that whoever had me would've just opted for that because it was easier. Nope. Even though I was specific about what I wanted, she didn't notice.

She won't be back in the office until 1/9 so i might just try every best buy I can to return it at this point. Maybe even Circuit Shitty.

Walmart will take anything back especially if you are exchanging.

I'm not kidding...I saw them take back used Women's Underwear once while waiting to return something.

My sister got me a fullscreen DVD a few years back, but it wasn't clearly marked at all on the packaging. I just exchanged it and didn't mention it to her.

Actually, the no receipt issue may have changed a lot recently in the retail world, at least from Best Buy. I got a copy of The Fifth Element Superbit as an early holiday gift at Thanksgiving. I already have it, and it was also a situation in where I couldn't ask for the receipt. Well, I figured I'd go to Best Buy and just do an exchange for another title, since they're all $9.99 right now. I spent a half hour as this CSR tries to go in the back room and look up the receipt for this DVD on a computer based on the givers name, location and timeframe. I was absolutely dumfounded at the time and effort wasted over a simple exchange. They obviously paid with cash, as the name was never found. The CSR then proceeded to inform me that I was completely SOL, no receipt, no exchange. It even still had the Best Buy sticker on the shrinkwrap outside. I was beyond mad, more in shock. I still have it. Maybe they change this policy after Christmas, but this is ridiculous.

I'm sure their reasoning is that you could just walk back to the DVD department, grab a copy, and go up to Customer Service and say "Yeah, I got this as a gift.. No, I don't have a receipt." I'm sure that their return policy will be a little more lax after Christmas.

Yeah i don't know what to do about that. The last time I tried to do that here in Best Buy, they gave me hell for it. And this DVD doesn't even have a price tag or any markings on it anywhere.

I might just tell her it doesn't work for some reason and that I want to exchange it. that might work.

When you walk into Best Buy, get one of the "greeters" to tag your copy as a return so they can be assured you didn't pick it up off the shelf. But without a receipt, I've found Best Buy to be full of a bunch of Scrooges when it comes to exchanges -- Christmas or no Christmas.

I had the pink tag put on it as soon as I walked in the door. They're pretty good about spotting returns to do this. This takes away the problem of people grabbing stock in the store and trying to return it. I have to believe that this new "no exchange whatsoever without receipt" policy is going to be met with many angry patrons after Christmas who don't have receipts. It's a very common scenario to get a gift and not want to cause embarrassment by asking for a return receipt. If the Best Buy price tag is still on there it seems like pissing off a customer who simply wants an exchange or store credit is not real smart business tactics, especially around Christmas!

My mother-in-law gave me a full screen copy of the new SE for Office Space. As soon as I opened it I glared at my wife who quickly said, "Oops." She should know better. I sent her to her room without any supper for the evening.

about returning stuff to the store without receipts, i think some stores do get dvds with different barcodes on the back. because one time i bought something from best buy and the disc was scratched but i knew they didn't have another copy so i went to circuit city and lied and told them it was a gift the cashier tried to scan it and she said the person must have purchased the gift from another store because the barcode didn't match the dvd they had in the store. i don't remember what it was but it was a farely new release

I would think that no matter what, the bar codes should always be the same, but maybe Best Buy has diiferent security magnets inside than Circuit City. If you take it back to CC, their security devices might not match
