While I also love Buffy and Angel, I do see them as quite different, and not to belabor the point, but Firefly really leans toward the "western" side of things than the sci-fi. I don't what I'm saying, except maybe, give it a chance. It's different, and relatively easy to collect the whole shebang. A four disc box and one movie, and you're done!

Joss Whedon's 'sci-fi western' Serenity will be released on DVD on February 27 in the UK, with more bonus features than its Region 1 counterpart.
Empire Online reveals today that UK fans will be treated to a 20-minute documentary of which American buyers are to be deprived. Entitled A Filmmaker's Journey, the piece will follow Whedon's progress in putting his story to film.

wonder if this will be a bonus someplace, bestbuy or walmart? ..dunno if there's gonna be any exclusive bonus disc anywhere with serenity..

Whedon has said that the future of the franchise is riding on the DVD sales. Hopefully too many people don't decide to wait on a special edition that might never come.
I loved the movie and will dip as many times as they release it and I have never double dipped in the past.

I always forget about that whole western aspect of Firefly. To even a casual follower of the show it probably seems like you're belaboring the point, but as someone who's seen nothing of the franchise but the front and back of the DVD box set (and only once or twice at that), I appreciate the reminder.

Having seen the DVD now, I think a SE has to be in the works. There were deleted/alternate scenes that Whedon mentioned in interviews and on his commentary itself that don't appear on the disk, and as others have mentioned a cast commentary, the full Comicon video, the web shorts, etc. would all be cool to see.
My Blockbuster was rented out of all it's copies only a few hours after opening Tuesday, and I've read that a lot of retail stores were running out of copies. It's already high on the Amazon chart, so hopefully brisk sales will do for the film what FIREFLY DVD sales did for SERENITY and make enough money to warrant a better edition, if not a sequel.
So I'll hold out for now. Either someone will ask Whedon and he'll give a definitive answer on whether an SE is on the way, or this will be dropped to $9.99 in some Circuit City ad in a few months.

Serenity was sold out at my local Walmart yesterday. So in 2 days they sold every copy (even the fool screen ones!).
I think this was another case of under estimating the demand for a particular release.

Got this at Walmart today. It was crazy crowded and all the traffic made even getting there an adventure. There were about 80 copies with no widescreen versions in sight. My calm was starting to get damaged before I finally found a couple WS's stashed away behind som foolscreens. It's a pretty packed DVD as it is, though I am sure there will be a re-release at some point. I'm just glad I have my copy now even if I have to double-dip for a few more bonuses later.

Joss Whedon has posted more on the Whedonesque website:
Yes, fanlings, there is going to be a 2 disc 'Special Edition' released this summer. You know why? 'Cause the 1 disc 'Normal Edition' has sold so well -- so maybe a little self-back-patting is in order for you guys. Way to keep her in the air.
It's too early to be sure what the Special Edition will contain, but here are some things we're going for:
NEW KEY ART.
Cast commentary -- assuming I can get a decent number of them in one room. They're very busy people, I'm happy to say.
NEW KEY ART.
The region 4 goodies, obviously.
The Tam Sessions.
KEY NEW ART.
New Yub Yub, and Greedo shoots first. So does that kid outside the trading station, the pilot who destroyed Haven, and Kaylee. And Richard Dreyfuss goes INSIDE the mothership.
KEW RAT YEN.
An alternate ending, if you turn it off early.
Proof of the existence of a benevolent higher power -- uh, I mean, new key art.
Mice.
And honestly, what more do you want? Don't answer that, I already know and it's unseemly. But I'm pretty excited here. Back to work, -j.
Take my Yub,
Take Yub Yub,
Yub Yub tak the Yub from Meee...dichlorians....

How awesome would this be in a limited steelbook?

Wow, yeah, not really sure how many times I've viewed the current disc, but anything to get a little more info on the Firefly -verse is a always a good thing.
Agree with the idea that steelbook would be cool.

Well, it'll be a triple-dip for me (already bought the standard and HD-DVD).
So, if this is coming out on HD as well, they better announce it before the standard release 'cause I'm not quadruple-dipping.
Unless....maybe a 'Complete Firefly' HD-DVD pack with the entire series and the film together, with all the extras? That'd be sweet.
