Top DVDs of 2005, According to US
I figure someone does this every year, so why not get the ball rolling and start a little early? Why not indeed.
Rank your ten favorite movie DVDs from 1 to 10. You also get 5 TV-on-DVD picks. Anyways, you know how this project works by now. Your post should look like this:
The plan is to take everyone's ballot and put together a final list of 2005's Best DVD Releases, according to the DVDTalk Membership. Your #1 pick gets 10 points, #2 gets 9, etc. Your #1 TV set gets 5 points, #2 gets 4, etc.
Obviously there's still half of November and all of December to go, so the list you come up with now might change in the next six weeks. I won't be doing any number-crunching until after 2005's final Tuesday, so feel free to edit your lists as often as you like. I'll give a warning when the final ballot deadline is near.
--Please be sure your picks had DVD release dates in 2005. Not the theatrical release date. R1 release dates, obviously. I live in Philadelphia.
--Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry, etc., count as movie entries, not TV shows.
--Multi-movie box-sets do count as ONE pick, but none of that "Complete Buffy 42-Disc 12-Season Box-Set Collection" stuff. Keep in mind we're trying to build a consensus towards the best releases of this year, not the priciest re-packages. When the inevitable yet friendly arguments arise about whether or not a particular release "should count," I reserve the right to play King Solomon and have final say.
--Any DVD that features Tara Reid, Paul Walker, or Cuba Gooding Jr. will not be accepted.
--If you insist upon listing your picks alphabetically instead of rankededly, it'll screw up the numbers, if only a little. Of course I will accept alpha-lists if that's the way you really want to do your picks, but then we'll just have a bunch of DVDs beginning with A, B and C that are getting free points, while The Wizard of Oz 3-disc Awesome Edition will get no free points because it begins with a W. At the very least, rank your top four or five and then toss the remaining picks in as alphabetically yet equally honorable mentions.
--This thread is for your ballots and for "best of 2005" discussion in general, but if/when you make changes to your ballot, please do it by editing your original post and NOT by posting a second ballot. That'll just give me more work to do.
--"Honorable Mention" picks aside from your main 10 & 5 are cool, but keep them in their own little list, set aside from the ballot portion.
--I'll leave it to you to decide if there's a difference between "My Favorite" DVDs and "The Best" DVDs. That discussion always gives me a headache.
--Please do not "split" votes or offer "ties." Your #1 pick cannot go to three spearate releases. Show some backbone and rank 'em!! Heh.
--Suggestions regarding this project are highly welcome. Ditto questions, comments, advice, counsel, ruminations, preponderances, observations, criticisms, praise, and indifference ... although if you really were indifferent you probably wouldn't bother posting about it.
I decided to post this because I wanted to write a feature on my 25 favorite DVDs of the year, but, aside from a few obvious picks, I had no idea where to get a reliable starting list. Plus I thought it would be a good way to remind myself what DVDs I should add to my "someone please buy me this" list.
So start your lists, set your placeholders, and commence bitching about how it's way too early to start up a thread like this one.
(Final Note: If someone already started up a thread that's just like this one, drop me the link. I did a half-dozen thread searches, but I didn't see one posted yet. I'll just chalk it up to a wasted fifteen minutes on my part, but coming up with all those fake DVD titles was pretty fun anyway.)
Rank your ten favorite movie DVDs from 1 to 10. You also get 5 TV-on-DVD picks. Anyways, you know how this project works by now. Your post should look like this:

Oh man, for a minute I thought you were serious about that Magnificent Ambersons DVD. Then I read through the rest of the list and realized what it was. I'm still holding out hope on that director's cut. It happened with The Passion of Joan of Arc, it can happen with this one too.

Thanks for the input, guys.
Only correction I have so far is for Sweet Baby James. As mentioned in my initial post, the Looney Tunes set counts as a theatrical title, and not a TV one. Please switch it over.

I think the argument between "best" and "favorite" is a legitimate one, albeit one that won't be solved here. Therefore, all I can do is offer up my favorites, as I didn't buy/won't be buying many of the "big" sets this year (Wizard of Oz, King Kong, Ben-Hur, Bambi, Cinderella).
MOVIES
10. My Own Private Idaho: Criterion (decent movie with an elaborate and compelling special edition)
9. Star Trek: First Contact: Special Edition (my favorite Trek movie with a decent edition)
8. Raging Bull: Special Edition (great movie, great DVD set)
7. The Fly: Special Edition (excellent movie, excellent [and overwhelming] special features)
6. Gladiator: Extended Edition (I personally prefer the extended edition, and again, very comprehensive and overwhelming)
5. Heaven Can Wait: Criterion (great movie, nice set of features, glad to have it on DVD)
4. Freaked (very funny movie, great special edition, also glad to finally have it on DVD)
3. Hoop Dreams: Criterion (great movie, great DVD)
2. Titanic: Special Edition (it left me wanting more, but it had a lot that was good about it, and I had been waiting for such an edition for years)
1. The Batman Anthology (had been looking forward to proper editions of these since I got my DVD player in 1998, and they didn't let me down)
With regards to the movies, I found that I just didn't buy anywhere near as many movies this year as in past years, and it was hard to make a list (hence the inclusion of ST:FC, which was not an amazing special edition, but it is my favorite Trek movie). Basically, I was glad to get certain movies on DVD finally, and was glad to see some old favorites getting new editions. Again, I understand that I really passed up many of the year's true "best" DVDs, but oh well.
TV
5. NewsRadio: Seasons One and Two
4. Undeclared: The Complete Series
3. Fraggle Rock: Season One
2. Scrubs: Season Two
1. The Adventures of Pete and Pete: Season Two
Also with regards to TV: there were season sets of shows that came out this year that were excellent, but they primarily continued on the excellence that they had started in previous years (The Simpsons, Friends, South Park, Six Feet Under, Seinfeld). I wanted to focus on shows that were brand new to DVD this year.

At first I thought this was a ridiculous list in US magazine.
I'll save a place right here, thank you.

A request regarding entries like these:
Here's the request: Please don't make your picks this way. Five picks means five picks. With this kind of ranking, I've no idea how to allot the points. Well, I'd have an idea, but it's just extra work!
Also, Scrubs: Season One and Scrubs: Season Two are two separate releases. Great picks, IMO, but please rank 'em individually. (I think S2 is a tiny bit better.)
2. Scrubs: Seasons One and Two
1. Lost: Season One/The Adventures of Pete and Pete: Seasons One and Two
