watching the movies in original release date order is not only important to preserve the "twists" but also because when you watch 4-6 it feels like there is a real world going on outside of what you are seeing and it feels like you are witnessing just a small fraction of a larger story. episode 4 starts in the middle of a confrontation for example and characters constantly reference the past.

if you watch them in numerical order you will lose that. the movies will feel flat and less rich.

Especially if you watch episodes I-III at all...er...

The problem I see with watching it in numerical order, I-VI, is that it kinda makes Vader too sympathetic. As he's presented in the OT, he is the emodiment of evil - dark, menacing, a mystery. That gives him power and presence. I'm afraid that would be lost if you started with the PT. You just know too much.

I don't think Vader is very compelling or interesting until "Empire" & "Jedi". In the original film he's just a guy in a black suit. The story of how he actually became Vader improves the original movie a great deal as far as I'm concerned.

Watch them as they are meant to be 1-6. Its stupid to watch them out of order now that they are all out. The only reason they are trying to get you to watch them ass backwards is the "I am your Father" line. That line is so overused in everything that it is clique now. Even people who don't like Star Wars knows Vader is Lukes dad so its not like someone is going to crap their pants with surprise upon hearing it. It might have worked in 1980 but not in 2005. It is such a clique now that if you didn't know it was from ESB, and you heard it there, you'd probably groan thinking that Lucas built up this whole thing just to throw in some old line.

Watch them in this order... 4, 1, 2, 5, 3, and 6. It's the best way to introduce someone... And yes I'm being serious.

Don't get the CBS Star Wars Christmas for your son that people sell on eBay. He might never want to see another Star Wars movie. Also, you as his father might want to want Starwoids or Star Wait...just to make sure your son doesn't grow up to be like those guys!

Has Lucas ever given his opinion on the order they should be watched in? Somebody said they should be watched in order, that's the way they were meant to be. If that's the way they were meant to be, why didn't Lucas start with Episode One to begin with? And don't say he couldn't do the CGI effects and all that back in 1976. If it was that important to him, he would have worked on a way to get it to work back then.

TPM is no Citizen Kane, but it is lightyears better than the X-Mas special.

When Lucas wrote "Star Wars" he created the backstory of Vader and Obi-Wan. He fleshed them out later to create the PT. Now I don;t believe that every note of the story was written in 74 but I do think that Darth was Luke's father even before ESB was written.

Watching them out of order (specifically 4,5,1,2,3,6) is not just to preserve the "I am your father" surprise, but because the tone of the movies is different. The original ANH introduces you to the SW universe in a way that TPM simply doesn't do. Vader's introduction is one of them, the way Ben explains the Force both on Tatooine and the Falcon en route to Alderaan, the concept of how the Empire works, then in ESB, the whole situation is escalated to a fever pitch, and then Vader drops the bombshell on top of everything else. Then you go back, you get the introductions, you see why Vader didn't choke any officers at the end of ESB, he's not a completely evil guy, there's something to his psychosis. You get a better idea of how powerful the Jedi were, but you also see their failings, and that makes Yoda and Obi-Wan's "certain point of view's" a little easier to understand. You realize there is good in him, he didn't wake up one morning and decide to chop some heads. It was a slow path that burned him up inside, until he was burned up on the outside. When you get into ROTJ, it's far easier to accept that a family member in pain, can come around when he finally realizes what caused all this crap in the first place.

It's not just a "what's revealed" but far more of a "how it's revealed". Some compare the Anakin/Palpatine sequence in ROTS to be Godfather-esqu, and I think Lucas could have taken another lesson from Coppola wrt the back-in-forth-in-time technique of Godfather 2. It allowed you to see the parallels, the differences and the similarities.

We can all complain about the acting and writing, without being able to do anything about it, but being able to alter the tone of the storytelling is something under our control.

Too funny! I am on the fence. I do agree that RotS makes certain things in ANH resonate more, but you do lose the big ESB reveals of Vader and Yoda.

I tend to agree with everyone. Widescreen always I truly hate fullscreen. I beleive you can watch the movies either way. However, I believe to get the full drama of the unfolding story they should be watched the first time around in the order Star Wars fans in the last 30 or so years saw them 4,5,6,1,2,3. However, now that I have seen all of them in the 4,5,6,1,2,3 order I watch them in the 1,2,3,4,5,6 order now.

Well, in the order they were released, that would be: 4, 5, 6, special edition 4, 5, 6, 1, DVD edition 1, 2, DVD edition 4, 5, 6, 3, and beyond. (Did I miss any?)
