Amazon.com has dropped their price to $16.98

Mr. Plow 11-19-05 06:44 AM

My guess is that Universal will release the "Shiny Edition" dvd or a name equally as cutsy and more repulsive. I personally will buy whatever they throw at us just in the vain hope of seeing a sequel. Long live the crew of Serenity.

ruk 11-19-05 09:50 AM

well where is this interview where he stated a better edition is coming out, i guess i cannot wait with all this uncertainty, i have to pick it up.

Here's some good news browncoats (though it's not officially confirmed):

The project is said to be a lower budget undertaking streamlined for the small-screen.

IGN FilmForce checked with Joss Whedon's camp who denied the claim; Universal did not comment.

Time will tell if this rumor pans out.

reverie 12-02-05 09:35 AM

Must not get excited... must not get excited...

It would work just as good on TV as any other medium. I'm not sure what the budget was for the show, but it looked great to me!

critterdvd 12-02-05 01:45 PM

Thats good news... but over the years I've learned not to get excited over "future Joss Whedon" projects until I see the trailer so I know for sure its actually coming out...

Maybe the great character interaction, a lot what was lost on the big screen will be back for this.

If they put together a movie as good as the Dune remakes, it could be a great sequel. Otherwise, I think most of the original stuff on Sci-Fi is crap.

I agree with Josh Z when he said that this screams '80s low-budget sci-fi.

On another note, I've always wondered what's up with the Asian-styling of the Serenity logo. Does it tie into the film/series in some way, or is it just because it looks "cool"?

Probably ties in with the constant use of Chinese in teh series and movie.

uberjoe 12-06-05 02:19 PM

It's like 500 years in the future, and at some point the U.S. and China -- as the last two superpowers -- formed one massive government and became the Alliance (bad guys).

Nosebleed 12-06-05 02:22 PM

Thanks.

When did they explain that? I just always assumed China just became really important in the future.

I don't think it's ever been explained in the series/movie, but it has been explained in interviews and articles about the show.

Josh-da-man 12-06-05 05:43 PM

The Chinese influence on the series comes from the idea that the U.S. and China were last two super-powers on Earth-that-was, so their respective cultures have a lot of influence on the culture on the show.

(Which sort of begs the question: Where are all of the Asians in the 'verse? We only seem to see white people and black people, but no one of Asian descent. Everyone curses in Chinese and eats with chopsticks, but there are no Chinese people to be seen.)

Thanks

I got it off a random Firefly fan site that I found while googling. I will see if I can locate it again.

***Found it pretty quick...see if this is what you want: http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=65

Hmm, I must have missed those. Good to know I didn't miss something like that in the show. Thanks.

reverie 12-07-05 11:06 AM

There's also a wonderful book that has the script for Serenity, an interview with Joss, and a bit of background and art on the 'verse called "Serenity: The Official Visual Companion". If you're into Firefly/Serenity, I'd recommend it.

Thanks reverie. I just ordered it. I love the whole Serenity/Firefly world.

toddly6666 12-07-05 08:25 PM

on the DVD extras, the filmmakers (director and cast) directly say that China and USA are the last two superpowers on earth, and leave earth to colonize planets. The cultures join together to form one superpower, thus mixing cultures (americans cursing in Chinese)

Awesome. I hope you like it! It's not something I can see reading often, but it was enjoyable. There's a couple small scenes not in the film in the script, not sure if they're in the deleted scenes on the DVD or not.

SuperBatMan 12-09-05 08:03 PM

I just watched my first episode of 'Firefly' from it's showing on the Sci-Fi Channel tonight. I really enjoyed the show, and I'm intrigued to watch the rest of the series. I'll definitely be picking up the boxset, and 'Serenity'.

Question though, should I go about watching all the 'Firefly' episodes first, or would it not really matter?

I would definitely watch all of Firefly first if you have the means.

I figured so. Thanks for the reply.

I'll be looking for the boxset now. I might go out tomorrow and hopefully find it. I should be able to get through it all before next Tuesday.

Buzz Lightyear 12-10-05 01:42 AM

My Serenity dvd just shipped from dvdworldusa.com. It's a bit pricey I must admit, but for this one time I am willing to pay a couple of dollars extra.

Snowmaker 12-29-05 05:32 PM

Now how is Serenity the movie different from the TV episode two-parter of Firefly called "Serenity"?

I haven't seen either yet, but was reading the synopsis of the episodes and it sounds like what I've seen/heard of the movie.

I'm not sure I understand the question... they're completely different stories. One is the pilot to the TV show, one is the theatrical movie that continues the TV show.

Here:

http://www.tv.com/firefly/show/7097/episode_guide.html

Its not the pilot, its episodes 11 and 12.

JSwarce 12-29-05 06:04 PM

Snowmaker:

Fox TV, in its infinite wisdom, decided to air the two hour pilot at the END of the season! They thought that "The Train Job" made a good introduction to the series and characters  . While TTJ is a decent episode, the pilot "Serenity" gives us a much better introduction. The episodes are placed in the proper order on the DVD set (with the tv airdates shown in the episode descriptions).

I can just hear the comments during the post-mortem meeting...

"See, I told you no one would get it!"

Thanks, but that doesn't answer my original question.

seymouru 12-29-05 07:07 PM

Here's the answer to your question: how is Serenity the movie different from the TV episode two-parter of Firefly called "Serenity"?
  • The plot of the two-part TV episode called Serenity takes place at the beginning of the Firefly TV series. All the action in the series follows from the events shown in the two-part pilot.
  • The plot of the Serenity movie takes place after the end of the Firefly TV series.

Suffice to say, the pilot and the movie have two different storylines, with completely different events occurring in them. They do center around the same characters and explore similar themes though, which may account for some apparent surface similarities to someone who hasn't seen them.

As for the identical titles, the name of the ship in the series, a Firefly-class freighter, is Serenity. Universal chose it for the name for the movie because it was different from the show title while still being relevent. Plus, very few people would be familiar with what the pilot's name was anyway; most people don't pay too much attention to episode titles.

Its not like I'll see the episodes anytime soon. Thanks for the clarification though everyone.

Started watching the movie tonight. Got about 1/2 hour into it and was bored so I turned it off.

Funny, ... that's about the same thing that happened to me when Firefly first aired.

surfingelectrod 12-29-05 10:08 PM

I just bought the Firefly set. The first episode was really boring and too long. The second episode is much better.
