I wonder if they'd just seen a certain Mel Brooks movie starring Zero Mostel? ;)

Yeah, as opposed to winning ideas like "Howard the Duck."

(And Howard only got made because George got horny at the thought of a midget running around in a little tiny duck suit.)

Ok, then my prediction is $17.99.

Touche! And the last three Star Wars movies were so much better than Serentity. :lies:

I feel like 12/13 might have been a better pick, but maybe distribution was an issue. Hopefully, they will advertise it well.

It's the same time that Napoleon Dynamite came out last year - and that didn't stop it from having massive first week's sales.

I've been in the buisness long enough to know that this one's going to do VERY well it's first week out. As others have said, early gift for themsleves - and as you said, after Christmas sales are going to do well, too. Especially all those people who wanted, but didn't end up getting it for Christmas.

I was really into the whole promoting "serenity" thing when the movie was coming out... and you know what everyone that I saw it with liked or loved it (my parents who think Buffy teh Vampire Slayer is the worse thing to happen to television ever ate it up)... but after everything, I just realized that it is a cultish idea and movie... Im just glad to have my series finale with a whedon commentary...

Film isn't even out here yet

Wonder if any of the stores are going to have a combo special if you buy the Complete Series with the movie? I am only halfway thru the series right now & it is so good that the movie may be my first blind buy in years.

Have to agree. The posters, trailers and TV spots did nothing to make me want to see the film.

I eventually ended up going with some friends and it was better than the marketing had led me to believe, but I still didn't like the flick very much.

They might, but where the movie and the TV series are put out by two different companies, I'm gonna guess no. It's usually a better option of that happening when both are made by the same, because it's the studio(s) that produce it who offer a savings to the store on those kind of deals, who in turn pass it on to you. I wouldn't rule it out completely, though.

"Experience the Ultimate Action Adventure" -ohbfrank-

Gawd, I loved Firefly and Serenity, and I'm certain to pick up the DVD for Xmas, but if I wasn't a fan of the series/movie, that line alone would be a big RED FLAG for me, which would steer me away since I would perceive it as indicating the flick had massive suckkage.

It's apparent that the marketers are trying to lure folks in who've never heard of the series/movie, what with the dolled-up Glau on the cover, the gunplay, the space battle, the pseudo-rave, and now the "Ultimate Adventure" tagline.

I feel dirty.

Dazed 11-04-05 11:38 AM

thats one ugly cover. but i'll still be picking it up :D

Given that it's coming out so soon, is it safe to assume that the SE was nixed? If so, I'll be getting this but hope someone makes a good custom cover ASAP.

reverie 11-08-05 11:37 AM

There was an SE in the works? What was it supposedly to contain..? Maybe they're holding onto it for now so we all buy this and then they'll release that one... nah, no company would do that! (No complaints from me, the more Serenity, the better!)

There was an interview with Whedon a while back (sorry, I don't recall where) in which he stated that they were working on the loose theory that the ion cloud would serve as a means of extending the atmosphere or creating a false atmosphere. Hence, there was sound during that scene. As I recall, he said his science advisors didn't know wether or not that was possible so he decided just say that it was and use it that way in the film.
Spoiler:
I guess that's why you hear radio transmissions when the camera first zooms through the ion cloud and how the audio just fades in as the Reaver ships break through the ion cloud.

And non-fans of the show and serious DVD consumers will buy it for that reason. If they had actually put the normal photo of Summer, less people will buy it, because the look of Summer is an acquired taste. She is not automatically hot when you look at her, in fact, she's a bit creepy looking. But when you watch the show, her looks grow on you and for other people she does look automatically hot, but in this photoshopped photo, no one can argue that she does not look hot...They could have put the more attractive actresses on the cover, Inari and the ship mechanic girl, but that would be more false advertising cuz they aren't the main stars...

We all know that the Firefly fans will buy the DVD no matter what. I just hope their little photoshopped marketing ploy works to make massive sales of this Serenity DVD to convince tv producers to get this TV show back on air...or at least more movie sequels...

By that logic, they should have made a coverart that features all the ladies (with a non-Cheetara Summer Glau) in the foreground towards the bottom of the coverart, with Gina Torres in the centre sporting
Spoiler:
that gorgeous dress she wore during the funeral scene or
her commando getup and holding a big damn gun, and the guys in the background, with Mal in centre, towards the top of the coverart. Just add the title in the middle (like in the current coverart) and you've got yourself an effective piece of coverart.

ugabuga 11-08-05 12:20 PM

Well i liked the movie and will buy the dvd, though i forsee this in 6 months being in $5 bins at many stores.

The only thing I remember that Joss Whedon confirmed for the SE was a full cast commentary. There was fan speculation of it containing R_Tam Sessions and more documentaries and whatnot. Also, fans hoped for an extended version of the film but apparently Joss Whedon had said that the theatrical edition was his director's cut and he has no plans for an extended cut of any sort.

Oh and it seems that the disdain towards the coverart was enough to start this petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/SerenDVD/petition.html

slop101 11-08-05 03:01 PM

Besides everyone being all bug-eyed, that's a lot better.

RaMMaR 11-08-05 03:43 PM

If the Aussie ver. has better artwork (considering the R1 :yack:, that's already a given) AND DTS, i'm gonna hold out for that release.

All Australian DVDs have huge ratings certificates taking up 1/4 of the front cover. And PAL speedup negates the advantages of DTS.

neocheddar02 11-08-05 07:05 PM

I don't mind the menus, but this coverart really is atrocious. I might just make a custom black cover with the Serenity logo, sort of like Armageddon Criterion.

Still, I'm looking forward to this.

Ouch. I doubt this release will be this year's From Justin to Kelly where the product just sits there and collects dust without a huge pricedrop. Considering Firefly has sold 500,000 copies, I'd expect Serenity to sell the same amount, plus additional copies from those folks who simply buy every big release each week (and there are tons of people like that).

I don't totally hate what we're getting, it's nice enough, but they really could have done a much better job. And made Summer look like Summer, and not some 25 year old whore (companion).

jetflair 11-13-05 06:37 AM

I'll be there for the DVD, and it'll be the first time I've ever longed for a double dip. There's no way I'm not buying this, but I sure hope they give us some more special features.

I don't hate the cover as much as some, but after seeing some fan covers I decided Universal could have done MUCH better! Some more fan cover art can be found hosted in my gallery at www.exoticcatz.com/fireflyphotos

This is my favorite fan cover:

I'm curious why some in this thread feel that this release isn't a SE?
Is it just because there's no cast commentary?
Or that it doesn't go as in-depth as say one of the LOTR:EE DVDs (which I doubt they'll ever do)?

I mean it's got director's commentary, deleted scenes, a couple of documentaries, etc, it's far from being a bare bones release.
Joss Whedon was even quoted as saying this was how he wanted the film to be, so no added footage needs to be put back in for an extended edition/director's cut.

Scott Weinberg 11-13-05 01:23 PM

Can't wait to get my fingers on this disc. I loved this movie.

The promise of an extended cut is not what has people not refering to this as a special edition. It's that Joss Whedon had mentioned there being a better edition (featuring more in-depth documentaries and a cast commentary) in four to five months time after this release that would include even more special features. It's not that this releases is considered barebones. It's just considered standard.

astrochimp 11-13-05 05:39 PM

All i can see of the dvd cases on my shelf are the spines so the cover isnt that important to me.

Shox 'Blowncoat's collection' WIP covers at the den look the best that Ive seen so far.

I'm a huge fan and I'll be UPS-ing a copy to the UK, so my question is which retailer is more reliable about release dates, amazon or DVDempire.
Empire have chaeper UPS costs, but this movie is a must have VIP pressies so it's got to get here in time.

Is this better edition still going to come out, or did the movie's lack of box office success affect it?

Hard to say. One the one hand, the movie was a flop and Universal is going to be hesitant to budget much money towards a more elaborate special edition. On the other hand, they know that the franchise has a small but loyal fan base that will rebuy whatever double-dip they put out there. I guess it really depends on how well the first DVD release sells.
