I don't mind the cover or menus...maybe I'm just too in love with this flick to care... I thought today couldn't get any better with Star Wars and the Tragically Hip boxset, but then I find this thread and bam...awesome. I'm all over this and any double dips Universal has planned.

the sound in space in the film was really the only complaint I had about Serenity....I was disappointed it was not consistent with the tv show....

that artwork for the dvd is fucking atrocious. I really hope it gets changed.

I sort of like the menus though.

Looks good. I'm gonna get it largely, sight unseen. I saw a rather extended trailer some months back and it looks pretty cool. I bought the Firefly series but have not yet watched it. Do I need to watch it to understand the movie?

Spoiler:
The final space battle between the Reavers and the Alliance took place beneath an ion cloud but above the planet's atmosphere, yet there was plenty of whizzing and zooming and explosions.

It's probably not essential, but I'd definitely recommend it. Plus, since you already have it and it is EXCELLENT... why not give it a spin between now and the end of December?

Plus, on the rare off-chance that you hate the show, you can save yourself the cost of the new DVD.

Summer Glau image

The image on the cover is taken from the first International Advance poster which is, despite Summer's vaguely feline appearance, a vastly superior poster.

I like certain parts of the cover but when they are combined like that they aren't nearly as appealing. The menus are kinda cool but I'm curious to see them in action.

I like the menu screens a lot; they remind me of those in the Alien Quadrilogy DVDs.

The cover art needs work though. I wish they'd show the ship and Malcolm Reynolds more than River. Also, for the review blurb, I'd rather they put a "two thumbs up" quote from Ebert and Roeper (which it did get I think) than the quote they used. Seems like more people would consider seeing it that way if they weren't familiar with it, but I could be wrong.

Like the poster art, the DVD cover makes you think the movie is about a girl named Serenity.

Wuh duh ma huh ta duh fung-kwong duh wai-shung doh, You best be believing that the cover art looks like Tzao gao.

But as for that complaint. For the most part the movie stays true to the NO SOUND IN SPACE clause for the majority of the film and the only time it does deviant from that is when they are in the ion cloud and the planet's atmosphere so technically it is justified and ask Joss described it, could be there.

The main reason was that no sound just tested terribly and pulled people out of the scenes. They see an expolsion and they expect a BOOM regardless if they are in space or not. So the slight change that the Ion cloud and Atmospher gives it that grounds to pull it off.

What godawful cover art. They've managed to make the very innocently beautiful Summer Glau look like a porn star.

Must not get so close to Christmas.. must not get so close to Christmas... The cover is pretty bad, but oh well. I don't really mind the menus myself. So happy it's coming out that I can watch for the third time Christmas day!!

And yes, I'll double or whatever dip if more come out down the line for this one!

That's funny, cuz hearing sound in space in films not named Star Wars(or maybe Star Trek to a lesser extent) always pulls me out of the scene. I always liked how Firefly stayed true to the concept of space being a vacuum.

Im sure the creative sorts out there will come up with something better.

As for DTS, I was hoping that it would have it also. Universal has been pretty good about it in the past. So, I dont mind their higher price points when it includes it. Oh well.

My theory for the photoshoped Summer is that, in this dvd cover, she looks hot to someone that has never seen the show and the marketing people are trying to get more money from people just casually picking up this DVD on the Tuesday release day and thinking, "a sci-fi movie with a hot chick, hmmm...gonna need to buy that." And non-fans of the show and serious DVD consumers will buy it for that reason. If they had actually put the normal photo of Summer, less people will buy it, because the look of Summer is an acquired taste. She is not automatically hot when you look at her, in fact, she's a bit creepy looking. But when you watch the show, her looks grow on you and for other people she does look automatically hot, but in this photoshopped photo, no one can argue that she does not look hot...They could have put the more attractive actresses on the cover, Inari and the ship mechanic girl, but that would be more false advertising cuz they aren't the main stars...

We all know that the Firefly fans will buy the DVD no matter what. I just hope their little photoshopped marketing ploy works to make massive sales of this Serenity DVD to convince tv producers to get this TV show back on air...or at least more movie sequels...

Depending on the sales of this DVD and due to the lackluster theater performance, I bet any sequels will be straight-to-dvd releases.

That's true. Correction: 250 million people in the US are worse than Hitler. Still waiting on worldwide figures.

Have they already announced that there will be a second DVD release, or was that all fanboy speculation? $30 just seems like kind of a steep MSRP. I was hoping this one would be a bit cheaper.
