Re: DVD Rot ?
Maybe you could hit up an eBay seller and have them check their DVD to see if it still works before you buy it.

Re: DVD Rot ?
A few more:
La Femme Nikita: Season 1 - discs 1 & 3 are bad at the layer change, didn't bother checking the rest
Saturday Morning Cartoons 1960 Volume 2 - disc 1 starts glitching after the layer change
Plastic Man: The Complete Collection - all discs showing signs of rot
Does anybody have seasons 2-5 of La Femme Nikita (the original issued sets) to verify if they're bad? Mine are still unopened and I don't know if I should even bother with them.

Shit, I have to check my Saturday Morning sets now. Wanted to get Plastic Man also.
But I came here because I got a 3rd Larry King set from Amazon and as expected all 3 discs are bad, but it's ON now- they are sending me another one with the promise to return the bad one at Whole Foods. I'll just keep asking for a new set til I get one that plays or they run out.
Considering how big a backer of DVD Warner was back in the day, they sure have fucked over a lot of purchasers with that bad manufacturing plant.

I wanted to watch "Deliverance" the other night, but when I slipped it into the player I got the "the disc is dirty" message. I cleaned it well, but the message would not go away. I had to watch something else.

Wow... been awhile since I've been here, probably won't be a regular again though too much real life to deal w/
I did remember this thread/topic though and wanted to see how bad it has gotten. Recently I've been working through my 24 collection, watching one season a month. So far each season has had at least one problematic disk w/ lock ups, skips, or high pixilation on the screen
Only one in the first season IIRC has been completely unplayable though. About 1/2 way through season six, which has been the worse so far and what made me think of this topic. I guess nothing lasts forever but still disappointing. Should have digitized more of the collection when I got them originally but then you run into the issue of managing hard drive space and a lot of large files.

Someone went through and tested their huge collection, finding a master list of sorts for what sets are prone to failure. Anyone into classic but more obscure Hollywood flicks are severely affected.

There should be a replacement program for all titles made there, whether or not they’re out of print. It’s inexcusable how many discs have gone bad.

To be fair, WB for many years was pretty good about replacing faulty or bum discs if you could reach their customer service. Probably the best among the big studios in that regard.
But Hollywood views physical media as a dying business they want finished sooner rather than later.
It's why I wouldn't feel guilty ripping any movie disc I own for personal use.

I know these were reported before: I had seasons 1-9 of DALLAS. All 9 seasons had some kind of rot. Also, Dead Like Me Season 2 (the Showtime series) had a few bad discs. Season 1 was fine though.

Re: DVD Rot ?
My copy of The Drew Carey Show: Season One has succumbed. Disc 1 jittered and shuddered when loading, and the first few episodes played fine...but then the disc locked up and I couldn't go any further. Disc 2 was fine, but then again, it's a single-layer disc. Disc 3 took forever to load, and locked up before the first episode on the disc was over. I'm not even going to try Disc 4.
And, yup, it's a Warner Brothers set from 2007.

I just came across another Warner Brothers title too: Chips - season 1 and 2 were both bad.

I just had two mid-2000s MGM titles crap-out at the half-way point;
Heartbreakers
A Fish Called Wanda 2-disc (MGM/20th Century Fox)
Both discs were flawless in appearance.

Re: DVD Rot ?
It seems DVDs were reliably manufactured from about 1997 through 2004ish, then their quality went downhill when plants really started cranking out the discs in 2005 and 2006 (the generally agreed peak of DVD sales). DVD manufacturing went through a lot of consolidation in the mid-2000s as studios started gearing up for Blu-ray/HD DVD.

Re: DVD Rot ?
Hundreds of your Warner Bros DVDs probably don’t work anymore
Due to the way WB manufactured their DVDs, virtually all discs pressed between 2006-8 are unplayable now.

I’m a huge fan of old movies. Now, when I say old I don’t mean movies from ten, twenty, or even thirty or forty years ago. I love movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood, specifically the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. I’ve always loved this period, and given how hard it is to find many of these movies on streaming, I’ve made an effort to buy as many of these movies on physical media as possible. As such, I have thousands of old movies on DVD, and among my most treasured titles are a few dozen DVD box sets Warner Bros put out in the mid-2000s, as they control the best library of classic film.
A few months ago, I dug into an old Humphrey Bogart box set to watch a favorite of mine, Passage to Marseille. After about an hour, the disc simply stopped working. The same thing happened with another movie from the set, Across the Pacific. I actually thought my old Blu-ray player was to blame, and given that I was in need of an upgrade anyway, I bought a new UHD player and just forgot about it.
Flash forward to about a week ago, when I decided to throw on an old Errol Flynn movie called Desperate Journey. The same thing happened. This was more concerning to me, as, unlike the other movies I mentioned, this has never gotten an HD release and was unavailable digitally. I did a little research online, and to my horror, I landed on several home theater forum threads (and a couple of good videos) confirming this was no fluke.
It turns out that virtually every Warner Bros DVD disc manufactured between 2006 and 2008 has succumbed to the dreaded laser rot, where discs simply stop working due to a rotting of the layers. Once it happens, it can’t be undone. This was a frequent problem with laserdiscs back in the 80s and 90s, but it wasn’t a huge problem with DVDs. The issue comes down to the way the discs were authored. Many of the titles affected, which range from classics like The Wild Bunchand The Shawshank Redemption to TV collections like The Dukes of Hazzard, have been reissued on Blu-ray or digital HD. Some of the titles, such as many of the titles in the Looney Tunes Collections and many of the Golden Age of Hollywood movies, have not, making them, in a lot of cases, lost media.
So, what can be done about this? Nothing. As stated in this RetroBlasting video, we had ticking time bombs on our hands, and the only way around the problem was to rip our faves to something like PLEX, but it’s too late for the majority of discs. Warner Bros, of course, has yet to comment on this, so people like me have thousands of worthless discs cluttering our shelves. Here’s the most comprehensive list of titles available.
So far, Blu-ray Discs aren’t affected, although all HD-DVD discs put out by WB in this period are basically expensive coasters.
While it would be great of WB was to try to make good to consumers by at least offering us replacement MOD discs from the Warner Archive, I’m not holding my breath. Given that the discs only went bad after fifteen years or so, I’m sure they feel like we got our money’s worth – which we certainly didn’t in my opinion. Special shout out to Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader, a superb Home Theater YouTube Channel that was way ahead of this story.
UPDATE: According to one of our readers, FilmFan-89, WB will replace some discs if you contact them directly, with a catch. They will only replace discs that are currently in print, and sadly, many of the defective titles are not. Reach out to them through the WB Store and keep us posted in the comment thread if they come through with replacements.

Re: DVD Rot ?
I'm sure I have a few of those WB DVDs. Some are in the garage in storage and haven't been played in years. But, not sure about the pressing date between 2006-2008
Like I have 2 WB DVDs on my shelf right now. Assassins and Driven. They are in the old "snap" shut case. How do I know when they were pressed? They're older movies. I also have the old Tin box DVD collection of the Superman special edition movies. Does that one fall into the range?

Re: DVD Rot ?
Going through some of those on the "Death" list:
My Peckinpah set still seems to be fine.
Hot Potato (On the Blaxploitation set) still works.
I have Attack/50 Foot Woman by itself and it's fine.
I watched Tom & Jerry Spotlight 1 with my niece's daughter last Xmas and there didn't appear to be any issues.
I thought Vol.1 Gangsters collection were goners, but they all still play.
Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, The Dr. X movies are goners but the other 2 discs in the set still work.
Disc 1 of the Karloff/Lugosi set is dead. But disc 2 is still alive....Just remembered I bought this set used.
