DVD Rot ?

I have around 250 dvd's and I think one of them has dvd rot.
It's the Parent Trap (new movie).
Some chapters are unplayable. The picture and sound freeze up and there is major pixelation.

There are a few small scratches but I don't think that would cause it.

speedyray 10-27-05 10:57 PM

Of my 1000 DVDs, one seems to not be working (that i know of) Blues Brothers 2000. Clean disc with no scratches will not even load. Tried multiple DVD players. Other than that I have had no real problems. Windtalkers does not play well in my player, but I think a newer player would read it just fine. Maybe just a deffective disc for both of us. It does nto seem to be a wode spread problem like it was with LD being deffective. If you search, this has been discussed in length before.

I've rewatched many of my old pre 2000 DVDs over the past few months and have yet to find a bad disc, but I'm sure its possible. The only bad discs I have had recently are the Universal ones and those come prerotted.

Spiderbite 10-27-05 11:43 PM

I have had three so far: American History X, The Apostle, & A Night To Remember: Criterion Collection.

Only one company of the three would replace my defective disc: Criterion.

Fincher Fan 10-28-05 03:27 AM

I have had three: Stigmata, Gladiator and Tomb Raider 2. I picked up the new extended version of Gladiator anyway and the others I doubt I would've watched more than once.

John Sy 10-28-05 07:15 AM

I have just over 400 discs and of them, Road Trip, The Others, Godfather Part II and Scary Movie have gone bad. Being in the Philippines, it's difficult to replace these discs...not that the companies would replace them anyway. I find it extremely annoying because Godfather and The Others are particular favorites of mine.

Do we just suck it up then?

Struz 10-28-05 07:27 AM

Would Disney replace it ?
Does anyone have a contact number ?

It's the widesreen version of The Parent Trap with Lindsay Lohan.
It's about 2 years old. It's not the SE.

AFAIK Disney are one of the few studios that do have a good policy on replacing defective discs.

Try here for a start - Disney's Support pages..

Disney

I'm assuming that it is from Disney Studios, not Buena Vista or somesuch.

If not, the title appears to be readily available from the usual online stores.

I got "Ghosts of the Abyss" at MG previously viewed and it would't play. I call up the Disney folks, I send it in and I received a brand new sea;ed copy a week later. Seems someone is smart enough to know that the price of a replacement is far cheaper than losing a customer. Nice CS.

Thanks.

I called the 800 # and this is what I they told me:

I called them from work not home, so I don't have the disk in front of me or the model # of my dvd player. It's a pioneer bought about 6 years ago.

They told me to try these 2 things first before calling back:

1) Press and hold the clear or program button for 10-15 seconds after putting disc in the player

2) Power down dvd player then unplug for 30 minutes

If neither works he said to call back and they would send a mailer for the dvd.
He didn't say anything about sending me a new one though.

I'll try it when I get home but I don't think either suggestions is going to fix the problem. If the problem was with the dvd player my other dvds would have similar problems, which they don't.

Not neccessarily. Even after all this time there are still incompatibility problems with players and discs. Many times a firmware update to the player can remedy the problem/

The Bus 10-28-05 12:33 PM

Any problems I've ever had are usually by playing DVDs on the PS2 (original Bad Boys, Final Destination 2). The Xbox and the player I previously used (a Panasonic) all played those fine.

Have you tried a different player?

Fok 10-28-05 12:50 PM

I find that its usually the player, but I've got a few DVDs that don't play properly

Not yet. I will tonight.

But this dvd has played on the same player a number of times without a problem. Why would it be the player ?

John Sy 10-31-05 06:28 AM

Add The Pianist to my list of DVDs that don't work anymore...

Aww come on speedyray, we know what you're TRYING to say, so just say it like you're SUPPOSED TO! Try something like this:

"Search is your friend."
"Welcome to ____ years ago."

or perhaps some sort of disapproving smiley:

"-ohbfrank-"

-wink-

Good point. And some of those earlier Disney DVDs like this one used copyprotection that messed with players. You might also check the website of your DVD manufactuer and see if they have any firmware updates avaiable for download.

emhello 10-31-05 04:28 PM

Couldn't firmware upgrades also end up creating problems for older discs?

Re: DVD Rot ?

Sorry to bring an old dead thread back to life but this appears to be one of the current Rot discussion.

I finally experienced this and man oh man is it frustrating. Now I wonder how many others could be affected. We watched Lethal Weapon last night for the first time in probably 10 years. It was still early and thought hey lets watch Lethal Weapon 2. Disc was dead and not able to be recognized by any player I have. Ugh...

It was one of the old Warner release the Director Cut still in the dreaded cardboard snapper case so it is pretty old.

Re: DVD Rot ?

I've only experienced it once (so far), that was with Demolition Man. WS/FS flipper disc (snap case), WS side would only boot to the menu, would go no further, had to watch it on the FS side (:(). I've since bought it on BD, threw the DVD in the trash.

Talk about a name from the past. As I recall, Struz used to be one of the most outspoken conservatives in the political forum.

Re: DVD Rot ?

I've run into DVD rot specifically with the 2 disc DVD version of 2004's Wonderland starring Val Kilmer.

Not once, but twice!

I purchased the DVD again once my original went bad, and although there were no problems initially the second time around, it was less than a year later where it too wouldn't play in ANY player I had. Which was atleast 3 players total I tried.

Oddly enough, the second discs, which contained the WADD documentary, have never given me trouble at all.

Just disc #1 which has the actual movie.

Re: DVD Rot ?

The 2nd disc in that is single-layer, so less likely to rot. I thought that disc was limited so bought it right away more than 10 years ago but still haven't watched it! Guess I should soon!
