Right, because no other companies make movies to make money.

I thought Disney has stopped releasing sequels, but thedigitalbits.com is reporting:

Meanwhile, Buena Vista has announced The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning for release on DVD on 8/26 (SRP $29.99). From the press release: "This all-new movie features Jodie Benson and Samuel Wright reprising their signature roles as the voices of Ariel and Sebastian. Audiences will also find out how best friends Ariel and Flounder first met." I know some of you were probably wondering, "Man, I wonder how Ariel and Flounder first met?" Well, there you go.

i just hope that this doesn't restart the trend of releasing crappy sequels of Disney classics.

I think they are releasing this because it was almost done when they announced no more sequels. So why waste all the money they spent on it, not to release it?

The preview for it is on 101 Dalmatians & The Aristocats

Also it's not a sequel, it's a prequel

They also have that CGI spin-off disaster Tinkerbell coming later this year also. I think those 2 are the last Cheapquels they are doing, until they need more money then they will churn out more classics like
Pinocchio 2: March of the Wooden Soldier (Pinocchio goes to war)

I'm sure someone like Mr. Payroll can correct me if I'm wrong, but I read that it was Eisner who always pushed for these Cheapquels (love the name!) and that Roy's guard is dead-set against them.

Correct. If I'm not mistaken though, Roy is retired. John Lasseter has taken up his charge though and cancelled everything but those that were deep in development, i.e. this movie and Tinkerbell. Last I read he basically scrapped about $30 million of work spent on Tinkerbell so he could retool the script and get it to a higher quality than your standard cheapquel fare. The reason they didn't just scrap it altogether is because of the multi-million dollar line of toys and advertising that has already been sunk into cross-promoting the Tinkerbell movie.

i wonder if in thirty years people will be asking to see unused footage, etc. I do think its strange that Dumbo 2 never saw the light of day, since they trailered it and everything.

Are you being serious? Because "Hook" is one of the worst movies ever made IMO.

Boy. Tink is hot!

You know I could probably have an easier time stomaching the cheapquels if the songs didn't suck so hard. Surely it can't be THAT hard to find decent music writers.
