So theres a NEW Star Wars (Original) Trilogy Box on the way?

I did a search for it but saw nothing (maybe its too deep in?) so I thought Id ask. Im sure I had read that a new set of all 6 movies is coming out, but I cant recall if I read one that the original trilogy was going to be rereleased as well. Is there a reason for this? Are they going to fix the problem people complained about when it was originally released?

I have a chance to get the set for about $28, but Im up in the air if theres a new one coming out.

The only problem I remember people complaining about was the fact they weren't the "original" trilogy (aka it was the new SEs). What problems are you thinking of?

He probably means Lucas's little changes; Hayden Christensen replacing Sebastian Shaw at the end of Return of the Jedi for example.

Any 6 film box set this year will be nothing more than a rebadged set of the current 2-disc sets. It will probably be no earlier than 2007 for a new, super duper box set is released with glitches fixed, new transfers, new extras, etc.

Are they going to fix the problem people complained about when it was originally released?
Highly doubtful. That probably won't happen until at least 2007 for the presumed 30th Anniversary box set.

I think the original poster may be referring to the audio mix problems on A NEW HOPE. Hopefully if the originals are re-released, that glitch will be fixed...since I find it hard to believe that's the way Lucas "intended" the original to sound.

I think the musical score be reversed in the surround channels is the audio problem they are talking about. Here a thread where it was discussed when the box came out. I think someone has the Digital Bits article quoted on page two of the thread.

Mr. nemein, the moderator, doesn't know about the audio mix problem??? I find that hard to believe.

Some say that the music is reversed in the rear channels. Quite frankly, I couldn't tell, as there was no way that I could check by holding my right rear next to my right front speaker to compare and vice versa.

Another problem people complained about was the way they mixed the music during one of the Death Star attack scenes when the X-Wings make that first plunge into the same horizontal plane with the Death Star surface. In previous versions, the music was loud and clearly audible. On the DVD, the music is VERY muted and practically inaudible.

Yup, thats exactley what Im talking about. Though when I saw them, I didnt notice anything major.

Truthfully, I dont mind any of the audio/visual changes becuase I NEVER saw the original ones when they were released. I finally saw SW for the first time 3 weeks ago.

However, I do hate the Han Solo/Greedo shooting thing. To me it looked like they had a draw old west style, but the way Hans head moves is so ugly and awkward; its the one thing I hate because its so noticable.

doesn't Luke also have the wrong color lightsaber in one of the scenes in Episode 4? Anyway, any word on whether they are also going to release a Prequel Trilogy boxset for those of us that already bought the OT set earlier this year? Or is it just going to be the gigantic 6 movie set?

They actually fixed that in the new DVD box set, and it is much improved over the '97 SE version. Still not as good as the original, but far better than it used to be.

The latest from Lucas on the subject of DVDs from Time Out!

Well a lot of it depends on the medium. You've got to remember that when 'Star Wars' came out there wasn't even VHS. There wasn't anything, it was a whole different world. We are releasing 'Episode III' at Christmas, though I'm not sure when the six-pack will come out. We may wait until we can do it high-def, that's been discussed. And it's hard to know what the next level is.
So Lucas doesn't even know. If there is a box set of all 6 films, it'll be the current sets with no changes. But he doesn't even seem sure on that.

Yeah there were like 100 threads on the subject when the DVDs were released, and they eventually got their own forums!

Lucasfilm will probably become a publicly owned company within the next 3-10 years. At that point, the company will try to squeeze every possible penny out of its properties, including unadulterated versions of the original trilogy. So, yes, you'll eventually get an authorized version of the "Yub Nub" song at last.

In Lucas' mind, the originals doesn't exist anymore. He's already said that he isn't going to produce the originals to dvd. If you have the VHS editions hold them. I still have the original CBS/FOX VHS versions.

BUT HAN SHOT FIRST11!!!1!!!!211

Actually, I do think the changes kind of ruined the film (and not just Han) but I also don't really care and have moved on.

As adamant as I was in my refusal to buy a "modified" version of the original trilogy, I almost caved when the DVDs came out. But after hearing about these two audio issues, I decided whether they were modified or not, there is no way I was buying an inferior product passed off by Lucasfilm as "the way they intended it to sound." If they fix these problems, I might be tempted again. We just better not have to buy an entire six-episode box set to get corrected versions.

This was posted on the View Askewniverse message board:

He will also release a Prequel boxset seperatly for those who already have the original trilogy boxset. Below is the details for every disk being released in the boxset containing all the films.

6. A short scene has been added where Anakin talks with Owen Lars (filmed during episode II)

A NEW HOPE:
New Digital and Audio transfer
The Changes:-
1. The 'Imperial March' music has been added to Vader's first appearence

2. When Obi-Wan is talking to Luke about his father Anakin’s theme music can heard in the background and when Obi-Wan starts talking about Vader it changes to the Imperial March

3. Luke’s lightasber is blue throughout the film (My Comment: I'm glad about this one)

4. In several scenes where creatures are seen (e.g. The Cantina) some have been replaced by creatures seen in the prequels (My Comment: Too far)

5. The bleeding arm Obi-Wan slices off a creature in the Cantina does not have blood seen on it

6. Just before the Death Star destroys Alderaan there is a new scene added where different places on the planet can be seen along with Bail Organa. Shots include Bail being warned of the Death Star, the destrution on the planet which includes massive earthquakes, fire and peopele frantically trying to escape, you see Bail looking up into the blackend sky before the planet totally blows up (filmed during episode III) (My Comment: WAY, WAY, WAY too far!!)

7. The Death Star’s computers and screens have been improved

8. The opening text crawl's last paragraph has changed slightly. The line 'headed by Governor Tarkin and the evil sith lord Darth Vader' has been added into it.

9. Luke looks upset when Biggs dies and he sheds a tear (all CGI & PRT)

10. The duel between Vader & Obi-Wan is roughly a minute longer as there are more shots of the lightsabers clashing and them moving about (done using CGI, PRT & Stuntmen playing Vader & Obi-Wan). Music has been added to the scene as well (deatails unknown yet)

11. Just before the medal ceromony at the end, a scene has been added where Vader lands his damaged ship on Coruscant to meet Palpatine. They discuss the destruction of the Death Star, Obi-Wan, & finding the Rebels (filmed during Episode III) (My Comment:Too far, adding scenes like that just doesn't work)

12. Vader's mask eyes remain black throughout the film and his suit is shinier. (My Comment: Great! I've been complaining about that inconsistincy for years)

13. John Williams has rescored the music for some of the scenes (details unknown yet apart from changes 1 & 2 in this list)

14. a shot of a Rebel ship crashing into Death Star has been removed and replaced with better effects

The Changes:-
1. Some shots where Taun-taun’s can be seen have been changed so the Tuan-tuan’s have more movement and look more realistic

2. While the battle of Hoth is going on Imperial ships land near the Rebel base and a few more shots of ships flying and being destroyed have been added

3. Some of the views of Bespin (for example the background where Luke is holding on to the metal poles beneath a building) have been improved to look more realistic and ships can be seen flying around in the distance

4. A scene has been added where Yoda is teaching Luke how to fight with a lightasber made possible by Luke wearing a helmet while training (a stunt double plays him, Mark Hamill provides the voice although it is digitaly dubbed) (My Comment: Bad George, BAAAD George)

5. The Wampa scenes have been edited and restored into the film as well as new scenes added. We see a Wampa being brought into the Rebel base and locked into a room with other Wampa’s. Later C-3PO rips the sign off the door the Wampa’s are behind stating their there and when the Stormtroopers enter the base they open the door only to be attacked by the Wampa’s who then can be seen escaping as the Millennium Falcon blasts off out of Hoth

6. Lightsaber effects improved

7. The sound of Luke’s lightasber turning off as he exits the cave has been removed

8. Some of Yoda's facial expressions have been improved with CGI

9. John Williams has rescored the music for some of the scenes (details unknown yet)

10. There is a line added and one changed in the hologram scene (details unknown yet)

11. The landscape of Dagobah through the fog has been extended using CGI.

4. The lightsaber effects have been improved

5. Vader has a flashback of Padme after his talk with Luke when he first meets him on Endor (filmed during Episode III) (My Comment: Ughhhh, the talk was one of my favourite scenes from the film, that will ruin it)

6. Kassykk & Utapau have been added to the end celebration scenes

7. Some of Yoda's facial expressions have been improved beacuse of CGI

8. Boba Fett's scream has been changed

I assure you this information 100 percent true. Sources were previously found at the following websites and info will start reamerging on them soon :-
www.theforce.net
www.comingsoon.net
www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html

The main bulk of info has been removed from these sites. Looks like Lucas's spy's are on the look-out. I think alot of this is BULLSHIT! He told us that the 2004 edition was his "true vision" and now he's making even more changes. I expected changes to the prequels but not to the OT. I like a few things, mainly the shiny Vader suit in ANH but thats it. The PT changes seem fair enough but still...WHY CAN'T THE MAN LEAVE HIS FILMS ALONE???? "
