Plans to rerelease the early Connery and Moore James Bond films? (merged)

I could be wrong but I don't believe the Bond films will ever be released in standard definition dvd again. Sony's primary goal in obtaining MGM/UA was to get their hands on the Bond films and use them get consumers to choose blu-ray over HD-DVD. When Casino Royale is released theatrically in fall 2007 is probably when the Bond catalog will re-released in HD only. If there is no format war they will still be used to promote HD. There has been speculation that Sony has discontinued several widescreen versions of titles in order to force HD on people by releasing a title widescreen in HD DVD but pan/scan only in standard dvd. Only time will tell but this is what I believe will happen.

I think they will. If there is money to be had they will do it. They wouldn't keep the current edition OOP if they weren't going to soup them up once again for another round. And the hddvd/blueray thing is a long way from being resolved...i think has scared away many people from adopting either format early. Sony is also going to want some quick returns on that MGM investment, Bond sets from Santa Xmas 06 is a good way to gain that return

Regardless, I'm sure they'll release them on HD as you said. Unless the dvd market falls apart the next two years, doubtful, I'd expect to see them on standard dvd again.

With both the Lowry digital treatment as well as Moore commentaries to look forward to, I regretfully admit I'll have to double dip on this, at least up to the last few movies which IMO look and sound great already.

from the bits
Around the Net today, the official Roger Moore website has indicated that Sir Roger has just begun recording new audio commentary tracks for the seven Bond films in which he starred. His first recording session, for A View to a Kill, was completed this last weekend. Word is, these tracks will be included on new Ultimate Editions of the Bond films set to be released by Sony in 2006 (and no doubt timed to coincide with the theatrical debut of Casino Royale). You can bet they'll likely be issued on Blu-ray Disc format in addition to standard DVD.

i do hope they get connery in for commentaries...
i also hope the new dvds retain all of the old commentaries.
how many laserdisc commentaries didn't come over, or were edited down?

Damn. I already own all of these and don't fancy shelling out on them all over again. I'd love to hear Moore's commentaries but not enough to buy them all over... If Lazenby comments on OHMSS with Diana Rigg then I might be tempted to double dip for that one. Dalton never did new interviews for the older DVDs, all of the stuff featured of him was interviews from the time. Be good to hear what he has to say.

I began rewatching my Bond DVDs a couple of weeks ago in chronological order. I'm up to Goldeneye now. I must say that I prefer (as do you, ReservoirDog45) Roger Moore over Sean Connery. Maybe it's because I grew up watching Moore in the theaters (I'm 36) or maybe because they simply seem less old fashioned. I don't know.
Of course, I think Pierce Brosnan is the best Bond (more sacrilege to some, I'm sure) and that Lazenby probably would have gone down in history as the undisputed best Bond if he hadn't made the choice not to do any more. Here's my order of preference:

Though I like Lazenby a bunch, I actually think Dalton was the closest to what Fleming wrote the character as ... Dalton would've been an amazing Bond in a '60's style Bond movie, but by the '80's, he was wrong for where the character had come. Still, I think he's the unsung great Bond.
