I agree with Groucho...it's definitely a comedy - and like all good comedies, it's laced with serious moments. I feel SIDEWAYS is slightly overrated (I don't think it's as good as Payne's ELECTION, but enjoyed it more than ABOUT SCHMIDT) - but it is a quite enjoyable film, and I liked it a lot. Just not sure it's worthy of "Best Picture" consideration (but then again, I don't think "Ray" is either - despite Jamie Foxx's great performance).

Semantics? Maybe. But I'm right and you're wrong.

I often find myself being disappointed by movies that get so much praise, a la Lost In Translation (which I do like and do own, but it wasn't in my top 5 of that year). But this movie was a complete surprise. I knew I'd like it, but I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did. I definitely think it is worthy of a Best Picture nomination, one of the only times I've agreed with the Academy in the past couple years. Of course, the failure to nominate Paul Giamatti two years in a row does leave a bitter taste in my mouth. American Splendor was my favorite movie of 2003, and it failed to garner a nomination in either two of the categories I thought it was certain to. But I digress. Pretty much, Sideways knocked me... well, you know. I'd place it at #5 probably on my favorites of last year.
On a side note, I am getting really annoyed with studios releasing a separate full-screen version of a movie like this. With big blockbuster movies, it makes perfect sense. And I don't particularly care that much, as long as a widescreen version is made available. But it just seems like with movies like Lost In Translation, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and now Sideways, most of these movies' targeted audience will prefer widescreen. I guess they figure for the people that are buying it blind and prefer full-screen, they don't want to give them a reason to purchase something else available in full-screen. Silly, but whatever.
