No, I believe the retailers are mixing the two until all of the stock is depleted and this box set goes on moratorium. As many have said earlier, the new copies are on the shelves.

You obviously didn't follow any of those links. NEW VERSIONS of all 3 movies are expected at the end of 2005.

True. However, I am aware that a completely new release of the trilogy is expected in the near future. There will be a short moratorium after the bad sets and these new corrected sets that were released yesterday have completely sold-out.

Quick note about Costco...went down to my local one during lunch break, and they had it alright...packaged in a black longbox, with no indication whatsoever if it was widescreen or fullscreen. They had a bunch of them prominently displayed, so I'm almost positive it was the new release.

Priced at $18.99, it had no stickers of any kind on the box, and the UPC code on the back looked like it was Costco's own slapped on...no note of "V2" or anything like that. I checked the DVD closely to see if there was any type of indication of widescreen or fullscreen, but nothing.

I'll probably just save myself the aggravation and pick it up somewhere else, but if anyone has some info about Costco's stock, please post. Thanks!

I agree. For this price, and corrected framing already in the box, I'm not sure what anyone considering buying these films is still waiting for. What in the nebulous "later in 2005" release could be that much better?

They could clean up some of the more dated effects, and I wouldn't mind a scene-specific commentary with Zemeckis instead of those Q&A ones. (I mean, Fox too, since I'm just imagining hypothetical things that could be better.)

Actually, you guys are thinking about the first BTTF. From the IMDB:

The VHS release added a "To Be Continued..." title card at the end to advertise Back to the Future Part II (1989). This was not in the original theatrical release nor is it on the DVDs.

A true BTTF geek would know this, but is that really certain? I actually could swear I remember seeing that in the theater, especially since I never owned it on VHS. Buckaroo Banzaii did the same thing, but with no actual sequel (yet!).

Bummer, I just picked BTTF v2 tonight and there's no book in mine.

I think I hacked up my phrasing above. So do you remember seeing the "To be continued" when you saw it theatrically? I was sure I saw it. But maybe it was just on a TV rebroadcasts later.

I can't answer your question straightforward but I have done some research on these two versions (in sealed condition). By weighing them I have found the old version is 9.4 oz and the new version is 8.8 oz. The missing 0.6 oz could be the weight of the missing booklet. I have seen the booklet when I borrowed the DVD at my local public library when it came out in 2002. If the booklet was missing in the new version, it would be a real tough decision for BTTF fans. Are you going to keep or buy the old version then call Universal to get the replacement, or are you going to just buy the new version with the sacrifice of missing booklet?

For me, it all depends on whether the trailers on the DVD to the first BACK TO THE FUTURE movie have been upgraded to widescreen/letterboxed format, per my earlier query, so can someone please answer this? If the original film's DVD has not been altered in any way (most notably regarding the aforementioned trailer issue), then I'm going to go with the replacement via Universal so I can retain the original booklet...help me, DVDTalk community...you're my only hope...

I saw the sticker on a few copies last week, but I didn't see "V2" anywhere on the box. Those copies then sold out, and when I went back to Best Buy this week to get it for the lower price, they had plenty of copies in, but they were ALL fullscreen! I guess they don't want my money.

you could just sell the old version and keep the booklet, and buy the new version and put the booklet in there...WALA!

I picked this up today and sold my old version on half.com for about 20 bucks. My BB only had one copy on the shelf (FS). I asked an employee and he went in the back and brought out 3 copies of the WS version.

I got the original WS release from DDD when they had 20% off. Then sent in for replacements. But now pondering what to do regarding the "new" versions that are supposed to come out! dammit!

Saw this at BTTF.com.

"While rumors continue to circulate that the reason for the speedy moratorium is because Universal plans to release a 20th Anniversary disc for the first film later this year, there has been no official word on this to date."

It doesn't appear that all three movies will be released as 2 disc sets. I went ahead and bought the box set today. It didn't have the V2 in the barcode, but it did have the sticker and the UPC code referenced earlier.

***UPDATE***
Ok, I read on another forum that the Part II disc shows v2 on it, but Part III does not. I opened my set and verified this. Others have said that even though Part III does not show v2 on the disc, the framing issues are fixed. However, there is no booklet in this v2 set. I called Universal and was told to contact the customer service dept at universalstudios&[email protected] to inquiry about the missing booklet.
