Have to say...

I watched Batman last night and although it looked better than I thought it would, it definitely wasn't stellar. In fact, if you watch the scene right as the Batwing goes up to the moon, there are cuts in the print. Also, the sound mix is just atrocious. Very little surround activity (was listening to DTS).

Also, what's the deal with NOT having the Batman Forever teaser on there? THAT was my favorite Batman trailer. It had all music from the first movie and even had that shot of Bruce and the giant bat in it. Too bad :( Any place to find that on another disc??

You do have it on a disc somewhere? Are you at liberty to tell me where? I only have it on lousy VHS tape (from TV broadcasts).

Is it available on any commercial release? I have the video hits collection from Warner Bros and PURPLE RAIN, but even those DVDs are woefully incomplete.

Because if you, working in a store dedicated to DVDs and home theater systems, are stumped about something as basic as a new DVD release, give me that uniform, and let me make the big (minimum wage) bucks!

I was at Best Buy a couple weeks ago, pondering the new Fog release, and I asked a guy rearranging shelf contents if they were going to have some promotional tie-in with Revenge of the Sith. He said he was sure they would, and that it was coming out soon, but apparently didn't know the date. I offered, "November 1." So I had more information going in.

I worked at a Best Buy for a long time, and oftentimes we didn't know shit about any promotions for upcoming releases until the ad for the next week showed up, and even that was usually only a few days before the ad came out.

I've even just recently asked a buddy of mine who still works there what was happening with Batman and Revenge of the Sith, and even he didn't know--and I even knew a little bit more than he did, just from what I've read online.

Not everything can be blamed on the individual employees--the overall lack of knowlege passed down from corporate to the store level is the main culprit, in my opinion.

But I still knew all the important release dates, though. :)

Actually, I'm pretty sure that is the teaser for Batman Forever. The trailer is the one with the shot of the giant bat. From the looks of it, Batman and Batman Returns have the trailers, but not the teasers. And Batman Forever and Crapman & Robin are vice versa, teasers but no trailers.

CitizenFlynn 10-21-05 02:10 PM

What are the Batman/Batman Returns teasers like? Are they any similar to the ones on the SEs?

Batman and Batman Returns never had teasers.

Batman Forever had 4 trailers.

Not sure about B&R.

Um...except Batman had perhaps the most famous teaser of all time.

B&R had the one teaser that opened with the Forever suite and Freeze's infamous "My name is Freeze. Learn it well... for it is the chilling sound of your doom."

Really.

Then show me.

This came up on the HTB. No one could prove there was ever any other trailer besides the one on the DVD.

Fincher Fan 10-21-05 11:17 PM

The teaser for Batman was raw dailies cut together with no post-production on them. This was done to reassure all the Keaton naysayers.

Which would be... ????

Fincher Fan 10-21-05 11:28 PM

The one I posted above you.

Skoobooz 10-21-05 11:36 PM

They even discussed it in the documentary.

ShagMan 10-22-05 08:52 AM

the trailer for Batman already seemed very raw, with no music during most of it. So the teaser was even rougher??

Batman Returns did have another trailer besides the one on the DVD. It opened with the fight on the rooftop between Batman and Catwoman.

digitalfreaknyc 10-22-05 10:00 AM

Again, if these teasers exist, then where are they? Nowhere on the net?

Fincher Fan 10-22-05 10:06 AM

Digi, I don't think they were meant to be widely seen - although it would have been great to see it on the DVD purely for historical context.

Fincher Fan 10-22-05 10:12 AM

There's a good article at the Tim Burton Collective from USA Today dated 06/19/1989 that mentions the teaser was released in January.

Another quote from another article on the same site:

Even cartoonist Bob Kane, who created the Dark Knight 50 years ago, had early misgivings about Keaton, Peters recalled. And Kane's fears intensified after publication of an article last year in the Wall Street Journal "where they absolutely, completely crucified us.

"They went to comic book conventions across the United States, where fans were booing the concept of Michael as Batman, and they really felt we were bastardizing the idea.

"So Peter and I went into the editing room in December, cut a brief trailer and took it back to the United States. It had no narrative, no dialogue, no music, no credits--just some dynamic bits of footage.

"It was shown in theatres in January and February, and it basically changed the whole direction and perception of the movie, because people realized Batman would be a dark adventure and not a farce."

AFAIK, it's not available on any commercial release. I have it on a DVD that a fan made [I think it might also be on a promo WB VHS reel that I have].

I also definitely remembered the BR teaser with the rooftop fight at the beginning and a few alternate takes.

Luckily, I was able to find it here.

The quality is awful, but the teaser's great.

Warner seems to have completely arbitrary, yet fairly inflexible rules about trailers: They almost never include more than one (Batman Begins for example has the teaser but not the trailer), they never include release dates or "coming soon" at the tail (and some have been choppily reedited to remove such dates - see Lethal Weapon 4), and they are never 5.1 (the only exception being Contact).

My local Best Buy is now totally out of the Deluxe Edition, and it's no longer anywhere to be found in their system. DDD has it with a release date of 11/08/05 however.

... with a different UPC code though

Brent L 10-25-05 02:49 PM

Yes, that's exactly right.

In case I missed it, let me ask everyone this. Have they actually said just what exactly is going on with this release?

That is really odd, and I was wondering about that...if you watch the Batman Begins trailer, you can see that they actually went so far as to black out the release date at the end of the trailer. Why do they do this? It's so...arbitrary, like you said.
