Doesn't seem that bad to me. The OP said they were almost to the center of the picture.

I was really looking forward to this disc and this news concerned me. But, seeing those caps, it's not bad at all.

Are those screen-shots anamorphic?
On my TV, the subs are quite a bit higher on the image, otherwise, it looks just like that. That [bracket stuff] is constant. You have admit, they used a huge font - biggest I've ever seen, anyways.

And like I said, any of these things by themselves wouldn't be a big deal, but put them all together...

ok

those may be anamorphic : but any such image on a 4:3 tv as this one was would be showing black borders. ive done comparative shots of 4:3 to 16:9 on a disc to see if it was anamorphic before and the subs will indeed sit higher up on a 16:9 image and be across the picture...

i agree that they're HUGE and too domineering. i have a widescreen tv and if it's higher up than that... yes, i'd better learn japanese.

thing is : these are single still shots, and as soon as theyre coming thick and fast at your it will get annoying very quickly...

Those are pretty big.
Some dvd players allow you to shift the location, the size, and the brightness of the subtitles, if yours does that, that might help.
But it sure does look like that is a 'caption' not a 'subtitle'. Pretty big snafu, especially when it says this:
Captions: English
Subtitles: English, Francais
that does imply the program itself is subbed, not the commentary [although I like subbed commentary as well, sometimes they're hard to make out.] I think I'd actually like [for English films] English movie audio and the commentary only in subs, but that's another discussion.

esactly, not only does the box imply its meant to be subtitled, ofcourse, that its a japanese film suggests that should be the case : so the captions are what ive shown, and the subs are whats missing...

The size of the subtitles looks like an annoyance, but the inclusion of only a hearing impaired English track is inexcusable. I sure hope they offer replacements.

Doesn't look too bad to me. I'll happily buy it to support DVDs of foreign films without the English dub.

What really sucks is that it looks like they take up half of the screen! And since this is in 1:85 like the original ( if I remeber corectly..) it wont stay in the black bars.=(

Has anyone send a mail to thedigitalbits about this? Maybe if they make a big fuss about it we can expect a recall.

I just watched the DVD and must say that I will sell it right away and hope for a better re-release version. Picture quality is great but the subtitles are really bad.

Dealing with an R1 and being fine with it normally. This the first time I've considered region free players. This was fucked!

My own copy is already on its way and now I realize that (unless I want to watch it without subtitles) it is more of a coaster than Johnny Mnemonic.

Examples: When Batou fires the shotgun at the first gynoid in the introductory minutes, The "[explosion]" subtitle is overlaid over the shotgun and the whole effect of the cartridge ejecting in slow motion (half the scene's drama) is GONE!

Later, there's a scene in a gunfight where the subtitles say "[cat yowling]" (and get this) ...cover up the fucking cat!!!

These are just the worst two. It does not let up. This is one of those things that I wouldn't feel bad about the families of those responsible being wrent asunder. I am officially an angry geek.

I'm not unsymapthetic toward deaf people, but someone on their side has committed war, and I want a refund!

Dreamworks released this. Is this akin to the Studio Ghibli/Disney filtration conspiracy?

PS: Before I go out for my last smoke of the night and rot in despair over this, I gotta mention that I'm good at signing petitions, but not starting them. I will write a pysical letter, whatever. First and foremost I want this fixed. Second, I want Dreamworks punished financially for what amounts to fraud.
Anyone got any ideas? I'll pitch in some time.

Much better screen caps here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...t+in+the+shell

Doesn't look as bad, but still hoping for a recall. Some say that the canadian has eng. normal subs.

I have the Canadian version.

We are all in this together, I'm afraid.

Off topic...the Internal Affairs cover in the Canadian version is different and much better than the horrid Miramax one.

I looked at the pictures. The size doesn't bug me, I have lots of movies with subtitles that large.

The closed captioning thing, however, would probably get very very annoying.

My disc hasn't shipped yet though... hmm...
