Since I just ordered it from DVDSoon before reading this thread, all I have to say is thank god I can read french. Font is too big but at least I won't have to deal with the hearing impared stuff in brackets.

I have a few DVDs with the hearing impaired subs - My Sassy Girl is the most important one... it's annoying, but not such a huge deal. Still - I won't buy it now knowing this. I'll wait for a release from another region. Also - anyone consider getting a sub script and watching it that way?

There is no way they will do anything about it, as its only us net people who give a shit, average joe really doesnt care at all, so it wont hurt there sales. Hell with that crap cover you would have thought they shot themselves in the face from the get go.

Does it have a English 5.1 mix?
If so, I don't know what you guys are buggin about. Personally, for Anime (Not that I watch it that much anyway), but I don't care for subtitles when theres an English mix.

I finally picked this up and all I can say is you're missing out if you are letting the subtitles get to you. The words in the brackets aren't THAT bad, and seem to almost disappear as it gets more into the movie. Some of you are being a bit overdramatic.

Though, probably not the case for this movie.

But we're not given that choice here. Which is weird, as even the most obscure anime tv release has an english dub, yet this does not. WTF?

I'd much rather just have a English 5.1 track like the first GITS. For live action foreign films, I always watch with subtitles, for animation, I don't think it's 100% required. so fuck Dreamworks

Got the DVD today, watched it a bit. While the captions are slightly annoying, I just find them slightly annoying. I think they would mostly bother those people who aren't used to or don't like subtitles, though that doesn't always seem to be the case, judging by this thread.
If there's a free recall/replacement, I'll do it, but only to teach the studio that not making your disc correctly in the first place is bad business. Other than that, it's just a slight annoyance.

I watched my copy last night finally, and I have to say that the CC track wasn't too bad... yes, it is annoying at times, but overall I still greatly enjoyed the movie. The one thing that bothers me more than anything is the fact they chose some saturday-morning cartoon front art cover, instead of reusing the white art used on the movie poster... the art on the front doesn't even match to anything in the movie (tentacles coming out of the doll in weird spots hehe)... the opening sequence was about the best thing I have ever seen, especially in the CGI/anime category.
I LOVED the music though... will a score/soundtrack for this movie be available??

This is not a brag, it is more a reflection on luck (I consider it lucky at least). A buddy turned me on to the Lupin III cartoons that were done by Miyazaki about five years before Akira came out (at about the time when Robotech represented the best that anime had to offer). I think the Akira comic colored reprints were just being released. So basically I’m used to watching with no subtitles and often unaware of the story. I was reading Akira when we got our bootleg, so I could follow the story except for the end. I was like “What the hell is going on? Whatever it is, it’s cool.”
So with this one I will basically not be using subtitles when watching it for my self. The trouble is that I like to tell people about movies that I love and subtitles are necessary.
To me these are not slightly annoying. They are annoying big time.
They would be annoying to me even if I were deaf. The only time they make sense is when they prompt the character’s name that is speaking from off screen. Otherwise I would rather see the bubbles and rain and the gun firing with my eyes (since obviously I can see if I’m watching anything) than read words superimposed over the image that say [bubbling], [rain falling] or [explosion].
Also I honestly think the person who did do these was actually blind. There is one scene in which a yakuza thug, who has just been shot, is cowering and breathing short breaths in fear and the CC reads “[laughing, panting]”.
This is really, really lame.
Actually a physical deluge of mail might be a little less ignored than any electronic communication.
Can I ask what address you sent yours to? I’m really not too lazy to research it, but I might send mine to a different department or location. If you post the address I suggest that all of those who are as pissed as me take the time and (what is it?) 32 cents to send a letter to the same specific address. I think short and angry is the best (not like my long winded post).

(mostly) that'll be an advantage.
