Fine. I'll let this one slide. But if another anniversary edition or specially autographed edition or whatever comes out then I think my early comment has some worth. Either way, I am not talking so much about his newer movies, but riding the cash cow from his earlier movies. He knows collectors and fanboys and is takign advantage of the fact that they'll buy any uber edition that is released.

Did you ever stop to think that he also puts out these editions FOR the fans?

1) I've been a fan of his movies and I am looking forward to a better edition of this one. Why would I not want an improvement?
2) If this edition isn't worth upgrading then I won't buy it.

I'm a fan too. The original release was fine. It was the collector's edition. That should have been enough. There was tons of stuff on there. And most collectors will upgrade regardless because it's a newer, better edition. I don't mind the double-dip or whatever, but he did this with Clerks (which also had a more than adequate release). All I'm saying is that it appears a lot of what he's done lately has been financially driven. I've always thought he was above that. But again, it doesn't matter and I don't feel like arguing. I don't know if I will buy it though.

Yeah, I realize it makes me look like an asshole, but there was a point somewhere in there that I was trying to make. Again, it's not that big of a deal and since Univeral is behind it, Smith is not to blame. I was earlier saying that he should spend more time on his choice of scripts/movies than on what dvd to re-release as the Super-Master-Bit Edition.

The Clerks release was not more than adequate. We basically got a rehash of the laserdisc with the same non-anamorphic transfer and the same extras (that barely totaled 25 minutes).

The Mallrats DVD is in dire need of a new transfer and I would kill to have the TV version with commentary on DVD, plus the original Mallrats MTV movie special. There's also a handful of deleted scenes Smith & Co. make mention to on the current audio commentary, but are nowhere to be found on the DVD.

Definitely. If they included the TV version with just an intro, that would be OK. But what they really need to do is rip into it, maybe with a few cocktails (Parker/Stone style). I think the gang would do it, because Kevin is a big "fan" (so to speak) of the TV version.

The TV version is excellent. The comic books in the opening are all digitally altered to make them inoffensive, RUG MUNCHERS was digitals altered to just RUGS, farting while going down on was changed to puking while fooling around.. it's just amazing. I have it on VHS somewhere.. I think. One of the two things I always wanted to record to DVDR (the other being the E! True Hollywood story on Married.. With Children), hopefully it's on the disc WITH COMMENTARY and I can toss the tape.

from what i have heard is that the version on disc 2 is a version with more offensive jokes then the theatrical release. They apparently went back into the dailies and recut the film the way Kevin originally wanted to without studio interference. (it would be great if we got a Universal/Gramercy commentary track, where they back up why they made Kevin change everything.

I wonder how many more there'll be.. most of the studio changes were made during the writing process. I still hope the TV version is there.. I can't see the new cut being too much different from what we've got (the Governor's Party sub-plot needs to stay in the deleted scenes section) nor can I see it having nearly the humor value the TV cut does.

Personally, I think that if Smith starts re-releasing Dogma and/or Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back within the next few years, then it might be legitimate to complain about his motives (that is, outside of a potential HD upgrade or something...or unless he's finally able to put the "In Defense of Dogma" doc on Dogma or finally finishes the "Oh, What A Lovely Tea Party doc" for Jay and Silent Bob SB).

The first release of Clerks was not "more than adequate"...it was adequate. Yes, it provided the movie and some interesting special features, but as was proven with the recent Clerks X release, so much more could/should have been done.

Mallrats, though...sure, the transfer could probably use a re-do with today's technology, but special features-wise, outside of creating new Q&A sessions and re-editing the movie, the original disc was pretty packed. Did the world need a new edition of Mallrats? Probably not. Am I looking forward to it? Yes.

The real question, though, is Chasing Amy. I've heard Kevin Smith say countless times that the only special feature he could put on a new Chasing Amy disc would be the dailies, and let people edit the movie themselves. And if he did re-issue it, would it be a Criterion re-issue, or a Miramax Collector's Series edition? And what more could there be for that movie (outside of fixing the one shot in the train station)?

I just meant as far as supplementals go (as well as far as my memory serves me.) What was inaqequate? I don't mind the crappy transfer since I've felt that it being an arthouse picture, grainy film and so on are part of the package. But again, I really don't care but figured I'd say something anyway/.

Mallrats Extended Edition - 09.20.05
 

Universal Studios has just announced Mallrats X: 10th Anniversary Extended Edition for release on September 20th. The single-disc will include both the theatrical edition and a new extended cut of the film in anamorphic widescreen.

Aside from this, not much else has been revealed. Retail will be $26.98.

Meh. So far not worthy of an upgrade for me, especially if the Extended cut includes the original opening which really stunk (and is available on the current disc). The fact that this is a SINGLE disc leaves me to believe that it will be double sided (Universal's claim to fame) and probably will include a new commentary by Smith as well as the bulk of what was on the older disc.

Yeah...really surprised that it's one disc. I mean, it probably will be a DVD-18 or at least DVD-14, but still...it doesn't really make it seem like the big upgrade I know I was hoping for (even though I'm still getting it).

Still, outside of a new transfer, this has always seemed like a slightly dubious special edition, since the current one is so packed. But no more complaining from me until there's a full spec list.

Unless there's a book or something, That seems like an a thick box to package one disc in.

DVD Answers is also reporting a single disc.

Same as above. But yes, the pictured package does look too big to be a single disc, but then, pictures of packaging can be misleading.
