My wal-mart only has the shining and a clockwork orange, no box set. All the online retailers say the box set is backordered. I was really looking forward to this set today. I think there's going to be a lot of upset Kubrick fans today.
Yeah, something is definitely up with the box set... every single online store has it backordered, and it's not available for in-store pickup at any of the Best Buys around me, while all of the other 10/23 releases are. I'll still go out and look for it this morning, but I'm definitely not expecting to find it. Looks like there's been a delay.
Looks like it's still available from Warner's site. Not sure how long it takes for them to ship... and doesn't help those that want their instant gratification.
Not sure if it's any indication, but Columbia House have 2001, The Shining and the Kubrick Box Set moved to 11/19 now. Could Warners have decided to stagger the releases a bit?
I just ordered it for store pickup through BB and it was available. Hopefully it will be there.
Something funky is going on with Best Buy's site. I did a search for "kubrick" and, like before, it showed up on page 1 as "backordered". But it showed up on page 2 as "pre-order". I went back to page 1 and it wasn't there. It also disappeared from page 2.
Weird. |
I am located in MD and searhced the zip 21093 and all stores excpet one list the kubrick set as not being available. White Marsh MD lists as in stock
I pre-ordered this on Buy.com using PayPal (you're charged right as you order it, sooo) and it's reading "Temporarily Sold Out". This is ridiculous. Is there a number at Warner's we can call?
My local Barnes and Noble has some of the individual releases, but no box set. Not even in the computer! I have a %50 off coupon just waiting for that, too.
BJ's has the set for $50. i saw it there today. the packaging is 6 keepcases in a thin cardboard box. no slipcases.
It still seems to be available in Canada. Amazon.ca still list it in stock and I just picked up a set at Futureshop.
Wow was this a damn tough box set to track down! Went to multiple Walmarts in the area and no one had the set. Went to Target and no luck. Best Buy did have the set but not a lot of them. What the heck is going on? I know they love to sell the single titles but c'mon let people have the choice.

For people who asked about the packaging, it's keep cases (as opposed to thinpaks or a digipak). No slipcovers. Also, the cover artwork is different for the individual films... 2001 has HAL's eye on the cover, ACO has Alex's eye, and EWS has the mask from the orgy. FMJ has the helmet artwork. The Shining is another matter... it should be the door cover, that would make it consistent with the others, but instead it's the Jack Nicholson art. Also the others do not say "Two-Disc Special Edition" at the top, but The Shining does. The spine of The Shining is also inconsistent... so basically the "regular" version of The Shining wound up inside the box set, while the rest of the films have box set-exclusive artwork. The other three box sets were also like this (I could tell from the different spine for The Shining). |
Best Buy in Wheaton, MD had it so since I am at work I placed an order for in store pick up waiting to get confirmation email that they actually have it in stock.
What was the price at Target?

So what's the story with online stores? If you pre-ordered it and your credit card was already charged, it being available elsewhere isn't really helpful.
Warner....ordered from barnes and noble, shipping 11/8...great. At least it was $27.
Does anybody know WHV track record for shipping out new releases? I seem to remember some members reporting product arriving in advance of street date.....

I knew something was up when Sunday came and my amazon.com order hadn't converted to "shipping soon," which it usually does when it's a new release. I have prime shipping and almost invariably get the new releases delivered on release day. But I check my account today and it says "ships in 5-6 weeks."
My Days of Heaven CC shipped on schedule and I should have it in my hands tonight. However, this whole situation with the Kubrick set really sucks. I was looking forward to this more than any other release this year, and to top it off I just sold my old versions of 2001 and FMJ in anticipation of getting this. I am sure many people pre-ordered this well before release date; what kind of orders did WHV get from the retailers that may have caused them to manufacture what is apparently a very inadequate amount of sets? I remember something like this happened when Warner released one of their box sets of classic movies. As I recall, the individual releases were available but the set was in short supply for a while. Not a happy day for me at all... :mad2: |
Scans of the box set-exclusive covers not already seen... sorry for the lousy quality; maybe someone with a better scanner/camera (who manages to find the set) can post pics too:

HOLY, those are ugly!

You know, it wouldn't be a Kubrick release without some sort of fuck up at the corporate level.

Looks like I'll pass on the HD version. He makes a big deal about the HD being on 2 disks, but it's movie on one disk, extras on the other, so who cares? In SD, they'd use that as a selling point. He also says it's only a little better than the SD (but still better). "I'm going to give this a thumbs down. It may be a marginally superior image but spreading the HD package over two-discs does not utilize the superiority of hi-def DVD." I just don't get this at all. Edit: Not only that, but from what I read elsewhere (AVS forums, in both the Blu-Ray and the HD DVD sections), the guys TV as listed isn't even HD, so what's he doing reviewing HD releases. |
Thanks for the scans, starseed. |
I went to Target shortly after it opened and there was space for the boxset.... but it was empty.
Went to Best Buy to look at the set, glad to see that they are regular cases, and not slimcases.
Best Buy on Nicholasville Road in Lexington, KY had the box set an hour ago when I stopped in... Not a ton of them, maybe 8 or so. My set has the same covers already posted with the Jack art for The Shining... Meh, whatever, as long as the discs are good I'll be happy. I'm getting a little tired of re-re-re-re-buying Kubrick.
I only picked up the two I wanted: The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut. For being such a highly touted re-release, I was hoping the slipcases would have some nice foil and embossing on them, or great cover art underneath the slipcover, but that's a no on both accounts. Oh well, at least we have an un-edited EWS and both are in widescreen FINALLY. As an aside, I think the stark cover art for those in the box are quite nice.

And would it have been too difficult to use Tom's mask instead of that generic-looking one? I also hate how each movie's individual style has been erased to conform to using Futura, the most clinical font out there. Again, it works for 2001, but not the others.
Thanks for the scans, starseed. I'm not a fan of the way they look, either. The whole set, really, is kind of disappointing. The box is flimsy (it's no thicker than what WHV uses for its digipaks... surely they could've sprung for something sturdier, like what was used for the LOTR box) and the "squares" art is bad. I'm glad they tried to make the individual DVDs somewhat consistent (especially the spines), but it wasn't executed in the right way. I almost wish I had just picked up the individual releases, but then I wouldn't have FMJ. |
Good luck finding a mint box, if you find one at all. The one best buy in my area that was carrying it had about 5 of them and all of them were in rough shape. At least I got one. The guy putting them out said the reason so few stores got the set was because Warner has so many releases this week. Thats a pretty shitty reason.
Gonna go check out a Best Buy (or two, if necessary) in Chicago and see what's what. I'll report when I get home. Seems like they always underestimate demand for this type of release. Also accounts for the flimsy/tacky packaging. He's only the greatest director in the history of Warners, and one of the greatest of all filmdom.
I bet Full Metal Jacket will be released separately at a later date.
My copy of the box also has the standard "Jack's face" version of THE SHINING, so the font on the spine doesn't match at all with the others. Good thing I'm not too anal about that kind of stuff, or it would drive me crazy.
I guess these sets are hard to come by - did Warner think there wouldn't be much interest? |
Well I guess this is Kubrick haunting us, it does appear there are some variations to the Shining cover in the box set. I personally have the Jack face cover.

Now I have to decide if I want to double dip these four titles individually (I already have Full Metal Jacket in HD) or spring for the boxset. |
