Maybe the mixup with The Shining artwork in the boxset is what's causing a delay on more boxes being available.

Target is bad about putting new releases out during the middle of the day and not restocking. The Target here had one Kubrick boxset. I remember the Seinfeld gift sets where they only carried one in stock and wouldn't be getting anymore in. That's Target for ya. |
fk this - i'll just wait for the DDD sale
|
I guess I lucked out as my Best Buy had at least 25 copies of the box set, and most of them were in mint shape. But if I had gotten there when they opened, I would've been shit out of luck, because they didn't bring them out until after 11.

I'm confused.
Is there some problem with Amazon orders of the box set? Mine hasn't shipped yet, which is strange for Amazon. Help? |

Okay, glad I asked.
Thanks for the heads up on that, I'm gonna cancel my order. Hope they have this thing at costco... |
My Best Buy didn't have any Kubrick box sets. I asked a worker there and she said they were on order from the warehouse and she didn't know when they would come in. I almost bought Eyes Wide Shut but not for $19.99.
|
This is terrible. Buy.com, in all their infinate wisdom, is requiring up to 10 business days for a "cancellation request" to be processed for my order. I already was charged, but nothing shipped and it says it's sold out. I'm furious, if I could just get my money back I could go down to Best Buy and get it right away.
|
This whole situation is horrible, could WB have recalled the set because of some error? It seems that the online retailers have no stock to ship which leads me to believe they may have recalled them or only shipped to B&M stores and not many at that, it looks like Best Buy and some Targets and thats it. Has anyone checked FYE?

could someone post pics of the box, kinda the whole thing all together i just want to get a feel for its size.

Best Buy had only one boxset available and it was pretty beat up. If your anal about that, then you may have to look far and wide to find a set that is mint since the card stock is flimsy as others have posted.
I do like the art work for the slipcovers though, but because they are black, suspect they are prone to easily being damaged for what its worth. |
I can confirm that EWS has no audio commentary, and no option to play the original theatrical (R-rated) version.
I also join DVD Beaver's assessment of ACO's transfer as being rather "soft," although it doesn't bother me. I already sold my old copy of ACO, but just comparing it to the scenes of the film in chapter 16 of a Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures, the footage there is noticeably sharper (on my 4:3 television, at that) than the footage on the disc for ACO. The text on the disc art for Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures is also messed up, at least on my copy. The lettering in "Kubrick" is bunched up (KU squinched together, BRIC squinched together, then K off by itself). Not a big deal at all, but it shows Warner's real lack of attention to detail in putting this together. The lettering on my old copy of A Life in Pictures is spaced out normally. |
The box is so damn flimsy.

I got my box set...was very disappointed that the covers were totally different than what was advertised. I popped in my old fmj to see the difference in ws etc..and it looks like the full screen you actually see more...shouldn't it be the other way around? I'm a little confused by that.

The previous FMJ DVD was open matte, not pan and scan, and matted for theatrical presentation. That is correct.
|
Alright thanks for clearing that up for me guys. A shame there's not even artwork with any of the dvd's. This set is really a letdown imo. I do like the ws of course and the keep cases but other than that, the box is so cheesy and ugh the covers are killing me lol

what price was Best buy doingon the HD titles
|
I was at Best Buy at 10 this morning to buy this and the first store couldn't even find it. I had it in hand at the 2nd BB, but the cases of all 3 copies were beat up. I am anal about this (to this date, I have had the Warners Scorsese box set and never opened it, hoping one day I will find a good copy, buy it and return the damaged one). The only reason for me to buy in store instead of saving $15 on the online deal detailed in this thread was to get a good case. In the end, I didn't buy it. I am probably driving down to Orange County next week to buy Twin Peaks from the DVDPlanet store to ensure getting a good copy of that and will probably buy it then unless I find a better copy later in the week.

Ok, Best Buy had two box sets left and plenty of copies of the individual releases.
I almost bought the box set, but had an epiphany: I already own these movies!!! Someday in the future, I'll go HD and want to buy them all over again, again! The only reason I was even considering this is the audio commentaries and extras, but what's a couple year's wait in the grand scheme of things? If I have to, I can rent them to listen to the commentaries. Widescreen? I don't have a widescreen TV so The Shining and Full Metal Jacket look pretty awesome at open-matte. I did pick up Eyes Wide Shut for 14.99 because it's finally the uncensored version, but feel very burned that they dropped the Sydney Pollack commentary track. Almost didn't buy it in protest of that, but really want the real movie without the Jar-Jars blocking Kubrick's images. See you all again for the next botched double-dip!!! |
Why didn't FMJ get a 2-disc treatment like the others.
|
The only problem with renting the DVDs for the commentaries is- from where?
Netflix has stated they do not buy special editions or movies they already own. Now and then a few slip though but I'm still waiting for special editons of stuff like Batman, which I'd like to hear the commentary for, but don't necessarily want to own. Blockbuster carries some special editions but not all. For example, they seem to have 2001 and Clockwork Orange, but NOT The Shining. No idea why, they're just sort of sporadic about what they offer, special edition wise. As for brick and mortar video stores, they almost never seem to have special editions of DVDs, especially if they already have a copy of a previous release. Not surprising, since more people are flocking to the store to rent "Hostel 2" than they are "2001," but still, it'd be nice to see a few special editions on my local video store shelves. So I'm curious- where would folks rent these from, if they were so inclined? Because I like the idea of holding off, but I'd really like to hear those commentaries. At the same time, I know it'll be another 10 years before I watch the Shining again- so I don't really want to own it. |
I'm not sure why full metal jacket was treated so poorly. All it has is 1 commentary and a documentary. You'd figure they'd be able to add more than that. Ohh well Wb had a chance to make this a nice set and they sure did mess it up.. My guess about the shining is we got the 2 disk set that was available separately. The cover was supposed to have a door on it and it has jacks face. That explains why the spine is not the same as the others. I'd say another foul up be wb. All i know is if they ever release ews with a damn commentary i'm definitely there. Just a shame they didn't include one. Even fmj had one!
|
Actually I don't think there is a commentary on Full Metal Jacket.
I would love to be wrong about that but so far everything I've read points to no commentary. |
For Full Metal Jacket the special features are:
Commentary by Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey and Critic/Screenwriter Jay Cocks. New Featurette Full Metal Jacket: Between Good and Evil Theatrical Trailer |
Negative i've already listened to about 1/4 of it. It's with Ermey, baldwin, d'onofrio, and jay cocks a film critic.
|
just bought the full metal jacket blu-ray , it has commentary with actors from the film, bladwin, d'onfrio, ermey, and screenwriter.
errr, 2 people beat me to it |
I checked FYE after I got out of classes today and they did not even have the single releases. Neither did Best Buy or Circuit City.
|
FYE did not have any of them on DVD or HD, but my Best Buy had most of them. I only picked up The Shining on HD
|
After seeing posts about limited or non-existant availablity while I was at work, I decided to order in-store pickup at BB. The set they pulled for me had a dinged corner. Luckily they had one on the shelf in mint shape so I got that one instead.
One thing I don't understand is why BB had 2/3 page ad of the Kubrick titles, but didn't bother to stock it at half of their stores. All complaints aside, I think the $54.99 price is a very good value. |
Went to Best Buy this afternoon and picked up 1 of the 3 remaining copies. I knew if I waited until my day off this Friday they would be all gone.
|
I wonder if Warner will fix the problems people have with this set. Mainly, while I prefer the standard covers to the box set covers, I would still like a replacement Shining cover so the titles in the box match. I wish instead of these artsy single-image covers they had used black-framed theatrical poster art for the covers -- I think that would have looked classy.
I appreciate the set, this will be my first time seeing Clockwork, Shining, FMJ and EWS (because since I got serious about DVDs and movies, they've been promising this set), but the word here is "cheap". Not that the discs themselves won't reflect strong effort but mainly the packaging: the cases feel cheap, the covers themselves feel cheap and the outer box feels cheap. |
I saw the boxset and all the single titles on all formats (except FMJ on HD-DVD) at Best Buy today. They do seem rather cheap packaging wise as others have said ,but I'll be picking up the boxset.
|
Horribly cheap it kills me..
