Hey guys, don't know if anyone has seen this yet, but it looks like they have the final covers (or some weird variants) up on the set's official site. These aren't all the ones that they released months ago. The art for "The Shining" in particular is different (and terrible). Check it out: http://kubrickfilms.warnerbros.com/

Oh my, "The Shining" cover is awful.

In addition, it bothers me when the put a huge border around the cover art if it is part of a set or some series or something, you can easily denote that it is part of a box set (or whatever) without having to put a 1 inch border around the cover art.

bookcase3 10-19-07 09:53 AM

I actually like the door on the cover of The Shining. Classy. Perhaps this will be a slipcover?

Cosmic Bus 10-19-07 11:03 AM

The border looks great on 2001 and FMJ, and I really like the new "door" cover for the Shining; the previous one with Nicholson's face was horrid.

islandclaws 10-19-07 11:13 AM

I don't like these new covers. The Shining is terrible, I much prefer the first one they showed. And why does every image have to be shrunken into a little box on the front? Those cover images should be as large as possible.

PixyJunket 10-19-07 11:16 AM

I don't mind the borders or covers.. but why are they all in borders except The Shining?

Subgeniusguy 10-19-07 12:32 PM

The door cover for the Shining is an improvement but it still blows. I prefer the yellow poster artwork.

Now, I'm planning on getting these in Blu-Ray so I'm hoping it will hopefully be at least as sharp as the previous DVD, but this may be a transfer problem rather than a delivery issue.

What do you guys think?

They look about the same in sharpness to me from the comparisons, but if you look closely, the original disc has a little edge enhancement which may appear to give it a sharper look.

Oh what the hell? I just noticed that the new version is not anamorphic! I was going to say that the new version should look sharper due to being anamorphic, but it isn't! I'm buying these on BD so it doesn't affect me, but that sucks. I wouldn't buy this disc if I was still DVD-only because I usually don't double dip just for supplements.

Huh?! From DVDBeaver's review:

The original NTSC DVD was not anamorphic and had some visible digital artifacts. The new, 2-disc SE release, aside from appearing slightly softer in the captures below, vaults ahead of the old DVD in many areas. It is progressive (like the original), on a dual-layered disc and, as we stated, 16X9 enhanced.

Palpadious 10-19-07 02:12 PM

Has anyone confirmed that we'll be getting the full cut of the Shining on standard DVD?

The back cover shows 144 minutes (bottom right corner), so yes, it will be the complete cut. (From this scan you can also tell that these DVDs will have slipcovers.)

I'm just hoping that the Boxed Set will be Digipak similar to the Matrix set. That packaging was great. Otherwise it should be a box containing full digipaks like the Chaplin sets. One way or another, these films deserve digipaks.

I personally love the way the full-frame image looks. If that was medium-format photography, I could look at it for hours. Just look at the comparison on dvdbeaver - the shot with Danny on the floor in the hallway looks so much better 4:3 than the 16:9 frame. But to each their own, I guess.

I wish it was a "to each their own" situation, as I agree with you about the wonderful composition of the full-frame image in "The Shining" (and also FMJ and particularly EWS). It's a shame that given the controversy and the fact that both compositions are legitimate to a great degree, that we won't get both. This would have been an especially good option for the HD releases, where all that additional disc space could have been put to particularly good use.

And, while I'm on the subject, the European cut of "The Shining" should have been included in any truly definitive release.

Some of us have been singing this tune for years, but certain that WB would find a way to shortchange it somehow. I'm looking forward to this release as much as any from this year, but I can't help but lament what might have been.

I can't begin to fathom why anyone would lament the loss of so much footage in exchange for...well, nothing, it's just a ton of lost footage.

All i know is...i can't wait until Tuesday! Where is everyone picking their copies up? ? Walmart and best buy both have theirs for about $55-56.

Whoops, how did I miss that? I looked at the specs where they had "widescreen letterboxed" listed for both and assumed they meant non-anamorphic. Still, it doesn't look to have helped it, but these are just screenshots.

Well, people have already said the FS transfers are sharper, you're really only losing some in the color department. So why not just hang onto your old discs if you prefer the 4:3 composition? When we're not using anamorphic enhancement, aside from color how much better can we make a full-screen transfer look?

Having now seen the new discs in person, I have to assume what's being shown on that site is/was preliminary, unused artwork, as none of the covers have the borders (on the sleeve or case) and the Shining's artwork is Nicholson's face, not the door.

Rypro 525 10-20-07 12:50 AM

Just a friendly warning that many of the images are NSFW.

Anywho, I'm excited about this release and I can't wait to have my hands on it.

riotinmyskull 10-20-07 08:19 AM

does anyone know for sure how the packaging of the box set will be?? is it the individual releases in amaray's housed inside of a case or is it some sort of digipak packaging??

tommyp007 10-20-07 08:46 AM

Sold! (is it Tuesday yet?)

mike2 10-20-07 08:53 AM

I'm with you on that one Tommyp!

jmj713 10-20-07 10:36 AM

I'll wait for the DeepDiscount sale.

Palpadious 10-20-07 01:20 PM

They'll probably jack up the price right before the sale.

The Monkees 10-20-07 01:31 PM

I was hoping that The Shining would include the original ending...oh well, I think I will pick up the HD-DVD.

Hardly a foolproof way to tell, but given the image on the Barnes & Noble site, I'd wager it contains thinpaks like most of Warner's collections do now.

Imail724 10-20-07 01:57 PM

You can use the $12 off anything over $60 on this at dvdempire. Comes to $48.79 before s&h and tax (if they have tax, I've never ordered anything from them.)

riotinmyskull 10-20-07 01:59 PM

ok so is full metal jacket SD only available via the set?

Hey, I was hoping the movie would've had the original book ending ;)

cupcake jesus 10-20-07 02:19 PM

The menus for The Shining look awesome. Any reviews for the 2001 extras yet? I'm really excited to hear the Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood commentary. I love hearing actors talk about Kubrick. They all seem to have had a completely different experience working with him, depending on the performance he wanted from them.

cheers,

Is there some reason why Full Metal Jacket isn't for sale anywhere online?

Mine's on order from amazon since I have gift certs. This set will cost me nada and Days of Heaven Criterion about $3.00 after all my funds are applied.

It's going to be a happy day when UPS drops those packages on my porch (and we've been told we easily get the most packages of anyone on our block, since we hardly go to stores anymore...for anything).

Dr. Mantle 10-21-07 02:34 AM

DVDBeaver is saying that EWS has no commentary. The official press release said there was commentary by Sydney Pollack and historian Peter Loewenberg.

What gives?

its only available via the set..which sucks since I dumped my old version in anticipation of this one
may buy have to buy the set now..

anyone wnat to buy an old Clockwork Orange and new deluxe editions of Shining and Eyes Wide Shut?? :)

mike2 10-21-07 08:47 AM

Haha ya anyone want a region 2 of ews uncut? I'm surprised they only added the commentary on ews if you buy the box set...well i'll definitely be getting that then. Surprised Cruise didn't go for it as well?? Syndey was great in the film so it will be interesting to hear his own interpretation of the film.

I'm excited about the fmj commentary with Ermy. That in it self will be worth a double dip.. Although other than that, fmj really has minimal special features. It's the shittiest release of the dvd sets. Whereas 2001 is the most loaded!
