anyone wnat to buy an old Clockwork Orange and new deluxe editions of Shining and Eyes Wide Shut?? :)

Are you kidding me? Figures the main title I want is the one that's only in the set. I guess I won't be getting it this week after all because I sure can't afford the entire set right now.

jrsl76 10-21-07 09:59 AM

I know they're not part of the set, but does anyone know if Barry Lyndon or Lolita reviews have been posted. These two films deserve better, particularly Barry Lyndon, which I feel is one of Kubrick's finest films.

mistie-man 10-21-07 11:05 AM

Anyone know if there is going to be a hd-dvd or blu-ray box set?I only see the extra documentary disc in the dvd box.

I'll sell you the one I get for $16 (price of Barry Lyndon and $2 for shipping). I had wanted to switch those titles anyway.

I've wondered the same thing...there's not been any info on it whatsoever except that it's being released on tuesday...I guess we'll find out then.

I doubt new reviews will be posted for either. They are identical to the discs that were available previousl, just in keepcases now instead of snappers. No new features, still non-anamorphic.

mike2 10-21-07 12:03 PM

Ah well that's just worthless then. A shame because imo BL is a Kubrick masterpiece.

What gives?

Well, that's a surprise...also says that the US theatrical cut is missing as well. I doubt many here are dying to have this censored version of the movie again, but DVDBeaver says it is listed right on the cover that both versions are included, when they are not.

Perhaps some last-minute changes were made to this title, for whatever reason...

MikeShaynePI 10-21-07 03:04 PM

They fucked up the big Superman release last year. Wouldn't shock me if WHV fucked up the big Kubrick release this year.

Now, I'm planning on getting these in Blu-Ray so I'm hoping it will hopefully be at least as sharp as the previous DVD, but this may be a transfer problem rather than a delivery issue.

What do you guys think?

I know what you mean, and I am quite disappointed. I never bought Clockwork Orange back when it was out before, so I was really excited that I didn't pick it up before but it sure sucks that this transfer is so soft.

Where did you hear this? I'm wondering what happened to that Sydney Pollack commentary Warners promised for Eyes Wide Shut.

GreenVulture 10-21-07 04:48 PM

Well that blows about Full Metal Jacket; that's a dick move of Warners to release it individually on HD/Blu-Ray but not on SD-DVD.

dhs122 10-21-07 04:53 PM

Have we figured out where to get the best price on this set? Thanks!

RD1973 10-21-07 05:07 PM

Anyone get this yet? I'm trying to decide whether to get the individual sets or the box set. Just want to make sure which extras are on each. Also, could someone post pictures of the packaging?

rhcp1214 10-21-07 05:56 PM

looks like the cover art has changed slightly for each individual release...especially the shining

[QUOTE=MikeShaynePI]They fucked up the big Superman release last year. Wouldn't shock me if WHV fucked up the big Kubrick release this year.[/QUOTE

Fucked up = leaving off the original stereo mix off the '78 film's theatrical cut and including the bare-bones disc of III in the ultimate set? And they even fixed it. Seriously, a lot of releases get serious issues and WB actually fixed it all this time.

Why do I have the feeling that Kubrick's estate is behind some of the shortcomings? Sydney Pollack doing a commentary for EWS would be awesome since he's a great director in his own right and would probably provide the same level of quality Soderbergh gives. Maybe that's the problem. Having Keir Duella and Gary Lockwood on 2001 is mostly inconsequential compared to having someone like Roger Ebert.

Still, leaving off mono mixes and not including the Arthur C. Clarke interview (on the MGM 2001 DVD) is a bit pointless.

Josh-da-man 10-21-07 06:35 PM

ACO does look a lot softer in the screencaps. Wonder if the HD versions are that way, too.

And, I can't be one hundred percent sure (it's hard to tell by scrolling the page up and down), but the new version of 2001 also looks like it might be just slightly less sharp than the previous version. Most noticeable in the cap of the monolith overlooking the bed.

SendHelp 10-21-07 07:20 PM

so are the individuals 2-discs. and the box is just the one-discs?

chris_sc77 10-21-07 07:23 PM

^No, the box set has the 2-disk versions.

Cosmic Bus 10-21-07 07:25 PM

Someone has a few shots from the Blu-Ray version of Full Metal Jacket up if anyone cares to check it out:

This was mentioned a couple of pages back. The actual covers, however, do not reflect what's shown on the site. They are the same designs as have been shown all along.

lamphorn 10-21-07 08:10 PM

Looking forward to this release, but am having second thoughts on purchasing due to the amazing disappearing Eyes Wide Shut commentary track. As EWS was the disc I was most looking forward to (due to the unrated version and Sydney Pollack commentary), I'm pretty disappointed.

I already own the previous Kubrick Collection and it's really the full-length commentary tracks that are attracting me to this new set. So, they're losing points from me for that one.

tofferman 10-21-07 08:18 PM

At least to me, those look better than the existing HD-DVD I have.

I am wondering about the commentary for EWS as well. I was led to believe that the commentaries were supposed to be shorter scene-specific commentary tracks. One with Pollack and another one with someone else (producer maybe?)? In any event it does kinda suck if it doesn't really have any commentary but at least the other 4 films in the set have a full length one.

mike2 10-21-07 10:12 PM

So is it confirmed? No Commentary for ews...that just kills my weekend.

If you go to the Warner site and click to the EWS page, you'll see that it only lists trailers and TV spots as special features on disc 1. The pages for the other four films still list audio commentaries, so it certainly seems that the commentary for EWS didn't pan out.

maingon 10-21-07 10:29 PM

I just ordered 2001 and Clockwork Orange on HD-DVD from amazon. Gonna wait on EWS and The shining

jrsl76 10-22-07 12:46 PM

I thought that Barry Lyndon and Lolita were now Anamorphic, but I guess not. Maybe they are holding them back and releasing them later? Would Paths Of Glory, The Killing and Killer's Kiss have gone to 20th Century Fox or would they be like Casablanca and a few other titles that originally were released by MGM and later re-released by Warners. If Warners now holds them, maybe they are planning a Volume 2 set?

Killer's Kiss, The Killing, and Paths of Glory are all part of the United Artists library, still owned by MGM. I'm surprised that Fox didn't put something together to package them together. Especially since Paths of Glory was recently restored.

(FYI: New remasters should be 16x9 widescreen. The Killing is 1.75:1 and Paths of Glory is 1.85:1, per original release instructions).

JLBkret 10-22-07 02:11 PM

Does anyone know for sure if EWS is going to have the uncut version? The WB site does not say it.

This cover art says yes.

Johnny Zhivago 10-22-07 02:26 PM

The DVDBeaver review in this thread confirms it...

Skull 10-22-07 02:40 PM

DVDBeaver's review of A Clockwood Orange HD-DVD http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRe...HD_Blu-ray.htm

Looks like I'll pass on the HD version.

If they cropped to 1.78:1, that needs to be fixed immediately.

However, ACO was shot mostly with natural or on-set light with only simple lighting kits to fill in. Eyes Wide Shut also has a grainy soft look, even on 35mm prints. So, neither film should look "stunning" in terms of sharpness and smooth image. However, that soft grainy look for EWS looks awesome in 35mm. It adds to the dream-like feel of the movie. Just like ACO has sort of a documentary look to it.

joliom 10-22-07 06:26 PM

Has anyone confirmed what the packaging is yet? Thinpaks? Digipak? Keepcases?

mike2 10-22-07 07:42 PM

I'm pretty sure they're keepcases but not 100%. I was going to head out to walmart around 11:30 but they've been lazy @ putting out the new releases @ 12 so i may just wait until morning.

pbishop69 10-23-07 02:18 AM

So EVERYBODY is out of stock on the KUBRICK SET??? WTF!!!

KC

RD1973 10-23-07 02:20 AM

I'm thinking of getting the individual sets. The slip cases look alot classier to me than the crappy box set. Does anyone know if A Life in Pictures will be available individually? Also, does it have a slip case too?

pbishop69 10-23-07 02:38 AM

I'd buy them indivually, but I want FULL METAL JACKET too. This pisses me off!!!

He has now changed the review to reflect that it is 1.66:1.
