I bought my first DVD in April of 1997 to go along with my then brand new Toshiba player.
At my high water mark in 2001, I had over 1400 DVDs and that's when the epiphany came.
At an average price of $10 per disc, I had over $14,000 invested in software, or $4000 more than I had invested in the rest of my entire system!
Couple that with the realization that even if I watched one entire disc a day for the next 4 years straight, I would never get through the DVDs I already had, nevermind the new ones coming out.
I made a decision that day to trim the fat and only buy DVDs from that point on that I could truly see myself re-watching at least 2-3 times over the next 2-3 years.
Now, in October 2004, my collection is a shade under 400 -- which is still very high by some standards, I understand that -- and I can say that 98% of them are truly movies/TV shows that I adore and could rewatch many times over. I still plan to trim down by at least another 50 or so in the next few months.
Now, I rent the new releases where before I would buy them all, sight unseen. I don't buy a new TV boxset simply because it's out, but only if I am 100% certain I will rewatch it. To me, and this is only my opinion, buying something like 8 seasons of Friends on DVD makes no sense because a) I will never in my lifetime rewatch every episode of that show and b) It's on at least 3 times a day on TV anyway. I realize that priorities are different for others and that's cool, I'm just saying what I've come to realize being a DVDaddict collector for over 7 years now.
So those of you with over 1000 discs, really ask yourself... did you buy them because you truly love them and will rewatch them repeatedly? Or did you just buy them to add to your collection? I know what the answer used to be for me. Let's not even mention that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are a few years away. What will we all do then!!?

As I've said and as my link below say, I'm hovering around 325 according to DVDAfish. If I buy 10 titles a month, that's a huge amount for me. I can't fathom the people who in the "What are you getting this week" threads, that buy 5 or more titles at a time. Spending $100 a week on DVDs is just over-the-top in my book, not counting TV mind you.
December is going to be a huge month for me for regular, non-TV titles for me. I've got 9 titles that will go on December's credit card bill (including the Nov. 30th releases). That's a big month for me. My normal buying averages out to about 5 movies a month, and maybe a TV boxset or two.
Back in the late '80s and early '90s, I used to tape every movie on HBO that had a familiar title. I mean, I taped everything. If I heard of the movie, I taped it. Had a decent collection on VHS with 3 movies per tape in SLP. I also had a decent collection of store-bought VHS movies in SP. I collected those for about 12 years. And even by the time I stopped, I've got more DVDs now in just 3 years than I had SP VHS in 12 years. Why? Better price, better format, and release times quicker. That last reason is interesting. Remember back in the VHS days, the time it took for a new title to go from just rental status to buying status could be up to 2 years. I think the fact that buyable DVDs come out now within 3-9 months after their theatrical release is probably the reason why people's DVD collections have grown so quickly.

I miss that list but I also understand the pain it was to keep it updated. Thanks for the hard work you did... good times

According to DVDAficionado, I'm at 273 currently. I have 6 coming from Columbia House and another from DDD so I'll be at 280 very soon. Eventually I'd like to hover around 500. I also recently decided to do some pruning for the BBV deal which should knock me back to 250 or so.

last count...with 2 new dvds today....1,766 titles with around 500 still to add/be released. I'll hit 2,000 by the end of the year.
not much of a point in bragging....when others have 3 to 6,000. links to my library are for checking out my taste and thats about it. since I'm using an on-line collection system...might as well post a link, right? I may be proud of my selections but really don't care too much about what others think....unless they share the same taste.
I'm building a personal, complete library...for enjoyment and research. some have only 100 they want...I have a few thousand. really...it's no big deal until someone makes it a big deal.

630-something. And I think about 300 have been in the past year. Friggin sick, but I've slowed down in the past month or two. Maybe because I'm back in school and have no job, go figure.

... eww, a fine line!!!Either case, just bordering 450. However, like others, I plan on doing some winter cleaning fairly soon, with approximately 50 or so to get the cut.
And that's after letting 40 loose already this year. Then again, I've purchased over 200 for my biggest year yet .. and it's ain't over ..
. So who knows. There's that balance in conflict between blind buyer and keeping the collection in check with respect to quality. At least with everything sold back online, the $ lost is equivilent to a trip to the theater and a coke.

427 currently. I was well over 500 at one point but decided to sell off about 100-150 DVDs that I knew I wouldn't watch again or ones that have newer versions available. I buy just about everything used either from pawn shops or blockbuster, etc. I'd say the average price that I've paid is $9 give or take. Now my CD collection is ridiculous - about 650.
I rent more than I buy now - I try to steer clear of the blind buys. Those are trouble.
The VHS collection went out the door as soon as I got into DVDs. I've got a few left over though i.e. Warren Miller Ski videos.
I think the addiction is genetic. My Dad has a book collection(well over 1000), VHS(30), DVD(about 30).
