The Thing Anamorphic SE at Borders

I just picked up The Thing anamorphic reissue at Borders. My local Borders loves breaking street dates, and this is no exception. There was no insert, though, when clearly there is supposed to be one. Great packaging, though. Can't wait to watch it!

Kant 10-12-04 06:35 PM

Be sure to post a mini review!

Please... And I think we still need a confirmation (other than Universal's website) that it's actually a new anamorphic transfer. I haven't seen a review on the web as of yet.

Glad I extracted the insert from my old edition before taking it to the used store.

I gotta fever! And the only prescription is more insert!

I wouldn't say there was supposed to be an insert, it's a Universal... Anyways, could you post pics of it if you have the capability? Also does this have a slip cover?

Sorry, were you talking about the insert?

Rammsteinfan 10-12-04 10:48 PM

Glad im keeping my booklet from the first one

Unfortunately, I have no where to host pictures. If anyone has any ideas for me, please let me know.

About the SE:

The transfer IS anamorphic, whereas the old disc was not. It looks sharp and the daytime snow scenes are excellent.

The new disc has a 5.1 mix; I'm not sure if the old disc did. Either way, this disc sounds excellent. Carpenter's score really gets a low end boost, especially in the opening scene. The disc also contains a 5.1 Spanish track.

The disc DOES have a slipcover; the slip cover has a transparent ice border that surrounds the screaming face on the digipack. Pretty cool.

The disc itself features new artwork (the old disc was pretty basic looking) that looks to be a snow-colored montage of the creatures from the film.

The package contains a little wall that looks as if it's supposed to hold an insert, however, mine didn't come with an insert of any kind.

The disc has new menus that reflect the new cover artwork.

All of the old features look to be ported over from the previous special edition.

Again, if anyone has a place for me to host pics, I'll gladly post them. I'm not much of a reviewer, but I hope my comments give you some idea of what to expect. BTW, what is the street date for this DVD?

Photobucket

Imageshack

Thanks for confirming that it is anamorphic.

I wish the new edition was in a keepcase, but oh well.

Picked it up today at Borders as well on my break from work, since Borders is right next door. I believe it was 14.99.

no insert in mine either.

I'm scared now.

I think that you should be holding up the Friday the 13th Box Set instead.

I could do that, but everyone has that already. ;)

Skull 10-13-04 01:19 AM

Will have to check my local Borders if they have it. Thanks for the heads up.

Daniel L 10-13-04 03:28 AM

My local Borders has done this numerous times. Not only that, but they're still carrying copies of Blood For Dracula and Flesh For Frankenstein Criterions.

Does anyone know if the original The Thing disc had a 5.1 disc? I owned it once upon a time (eventually had to sell it off, which is why it's so cool that they made a new one), and seem to remember the sound being in 2.0 stereo. Does anyone remember?

It had 5.1

gorgo99 10-13-04 08:13 AM

In fact, the old one still DOES have 5.1 ; )

It also has a music-only track. Does the new one? That's the only feature I didn't see listed... might make the old one worth keeping.

asianxcore 10-13-04 09:50 AM

the new disc lists on the back as Dolby Digital 5.1

Adrenaline 10-13-04 10:43 AM

They dropped the isolated score, too bad.

bunkaroo 10-13-04 01:00 PM

I found this as well at a Borders yesterday-wasn't even looking for it.

It is definitely anamorphic as stated above, and actually looks pretty good. There are still some grainy scenes, but an upgrade here seems like a no-brainer.

Here are some screenshots I took off my disc:

Adrenaline 10-13-04 01:17 PM

Looks much improved over the last release.

Filmmaker 10-13-04 01:30 PM

Daniel L, can you confirm what Adrenaline said--does the new disc keep the isolated music score from the previous DVD release? It was offered as kind of an easter egg on that first release, so you might have to hunt a little for it...

OldBoy 10-13-04 01:37 PM

the specs looked very similar from release to release...can you post what IS on the new and not the old?? thanks in advance if possible.

Ack! Ennio Morricone's score.

The new DVD does not reproduce the isolated score, an early DVD feature that is slowly being dropped from all releases. No DVD with an isolated score has ever retained it when the disc was re-released--too expensive along with some rights issues.
