Just picked up the only copy at Borders! Used the 20% off coupon and got it for $11.99 :)
Here is what I have noticed in differences: Main menu is different, music is different (the new disc uses the same music for all menus and not different like the old disc) Bonus features menu has same pics different order. The Terror Takes shape docu no longer has a menu to choose language or chapters. AND NO ISO SCORE. Chapter selection is now 6 scenes instead of 4 per page. Now has french subtitles, old one only had english and spanish. Movie doesnt just play like the old disc, goes to main menu first. And the movie... LOOKS AWESOME! I have watched my original thing DVD at least 50+ times and this one looks brighter and much sharper than previous version. Case is like pictured above, it even has a pocket for a booklet or insert, so where is it? ;) I think im going to keep both versions... |
Oh and I liked the idea of the slipcase... not too bad, better than I first thought.

I don't know what the deal is with not having isolated scores. Studios aren't putting out DVD Audio or SACD releases of their soundtracks so if you want to listen to it in 5.1/6.1/7.1 you're stuck using DPLII/IIx with the CD.

Originally posted by Adrenaline I don't know what the deal is with not having isolated scores. NEW DVDS SCUTTLE SOME OLD SCORES Randy A. Salas; Staff Writer 2 December 2003 Minneapolis Star Tribune Copyright (c) 2003 All rights reserved. (posted with permission) Today's release of the "Alien Quadrilogy" nine-disc set omits a feature found on the previous DVD of "Alien": alternate audio tracks with composer Jerry Goldsmith's orchestral score. It's not the first special-edition re-release to drop a so- called "isolated score," either. Last week's "The Dark Crystal: Collector's Edition" did it, as have re-released DVDs of "Amadeus," "Space Jam," "Patch Adams" and "The Mummy." There are three reasons why isolated scores have been disappearing from DVDs, according to Lukas Kendall, who publishes Film Score Monthly ( http://www.filmscoremonthly.com) and produces CDs of classic film scores: - Piracy: Unscrupulous collectors burn CDs off of the DVD tracks and circulate their homemade discs. - Lost sales: Record companies have protested the undercutting of sales of their CDs by essentially giving the tracks away for free as extras on DVDs. - Added costs: Music publishers and unions have demanded royalties from the isolated tracks. They argue that fees should be paid to their artists once the music is separated from the film's mixed soundtrack, because it's no different from a CD release. Although Kendall admitted that he rarely listens to isolated scores on DVD, he did lament the passing of the "Alien" tracks, which, he said, "went a long way to showing the different concepts of music in the movie: from the music the composer originally intended, to the revisions and the parts of the temporary score that were used in the finished picture." He said he planned to keep his copy of the original DVD. "I regret the phasing out of what is a very neat feature for the consumer," he added. "But in retrospect, it was too good a thing to last." |
Well , looks like i will have to check on the borders website tonight....

Re: The Thing Anamorphic SE at Borders
Originally posted by Daniel L I just picked up The Thing anamorphic reissue at Borders. My local Borders loves breaking street dates, and this is no exception. There was no insert, though, when clearly there is supposed to be one. Great packaging, though. Can't wait to watch it! How much did you pay for it? Do they also have Van Hellsing and Garfield available? |
$14.99 is reg price. There is a 10% off coupon on the Bargains thread but I got 20% off cause they didnt read it right :)
They will also give you a 25% off coupon in store if you buy something for next week. |

I DO think it's funny that Morricone did the score when it sounds so much like a Carpenter score... but I'm holding on to my original copy because of the isolated score.
I'll upgrade when I get a widescreen TV. BTW, one more to add to DVDs that have isolated score: Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Excellent isolated score, with Danny Elfman cutting in and commenting during slow parts. |
are we sure this isn't supposed to come with an insert? as some have said it has a pouch or maybe that Borders being released early just doesn't have them?

Originally posted by bboisvert Universal doesn't do inserts any more. They've released other discs with a pouch like that before, that have either been empty or just included an ad for 'similar' titles. |
Originally posted by scott1598 is there any point to have the old anymore? |
Keep the old and use it as a CD. ;)
|
i guess, i'll give it up.
but why couldn't they put a nice DTS track on the new one? why oh why? |
That way they can sell you the 25th anniversary version in 3 years? ;)

Can you really see a big difference in picture quality on a regular TV? I'm not sure if I want to double-dip on this one just yet.
|
Originally posted by rasalas Yeah, because the Dolby Digital 5.1 track on this one is just awful. -rolleyes- what will BB have this disk for later this month, any guesses? |
Originally posted by tommy28 rasalas is the 5.1 track on the new disk Really bad???? what will BB have this disk for later this month, any guesses? |
thanks i thought so;)
now any guesses on BB price, should i wait,or should i drive to Borders. |

Still, I've already put the old release in a 2-disc case, so I think I'm committed either way. :) RE price - BB's regular price will probably be 16.99, so a 14.99 "sale" price would be my guess. That should be CC's regular price so hopefully they'll have it on sale for 12.99... |
