I started buying my favorites fast when I finally broke down and got my first player. The Bond titles were what sold me on the format, looking as good as I had ever seen them with loads of extras throughout the series. I waited until June 2000 for my first player.

Boogie Nights- one of the discs I got on my trip to pick up my DVD/LD combo player and Dolby/DTS sound system. Just being able to watch a 2 1/2 hour movie uninterrupted on disc was cool enough, but it also included a commentary and deleted scenes and I'd paid less than $20 for it, while it was going for $39 on laserdisc! There was speculation that early DVD prices were just being kept low to get people into the format and then they'd be raised steadily, but thankfully they've since been going DOWN more than up!
In the LD days there were only a few titles that I could justify spending more than $30 on, and I'd jump on anything priced under $15 (Camelot Music cutouts). With DVD, I've bought more discs than I have time to watch!

Don't remember, I think it was US Marshals. Not that many to choose from back then. I just know that my original intention was to supplement my VHS collection. As soon as I got a couple DVD's and discovered WS I never looked back. Never bought another VHS and rarely watched one. By three months in I was dumping them as fast as I could.

actually it was the first two I bought that made me love the format- Bullitt and Carpenter's the Thing. I was sold on the format before buying my player as well...in fact I was the first person in my circle of friends and family to own a player.

I bought my first DVD before I even bought a player - "The Mummy Returns CE". As soon as I heard / saw the cool animated menus, I was hooked. And this was over only two speakers, with an analog pre-amp (though good equipment - vintage H/K amp driving vintage Genesis speakers).

The X-Files Season sets. Of course, the memory of those is diminished by the dismal later seasons and the fact that superior shows have since been released on DVD at less than half the price, but the fact that I could own a whole season of a favorite TV show on DVD was, and still is a major reason I love DVDs.

Phantasm: SE. i think i had bought tons of dvds before then, but when i got this one, i distinctively remembered the wow-factor in having pretty much all the goodies from the LD version ported over to a smaller, cheaper form (with DVD-quality a/v).

i fell in love with what DVD's offer when LaserDisc was the only way to get it. That being said Criterion's The Killer and Hard Boiled ($125 each at the time), also Taxi Driver and Raging (both of which i still own for their commentary tracks) were the first LaserDiscs i fell in love with because of all the supplemental materials and efforts to produce the most accurate picture possble at the time.

I'm a relatively late adopter of the DVD format. I bought the Band of Brothers boxset and was blown away by the video and sound qualiy especially...and also the amount of extras in it. Got hooked on DVDs since then.
