DVD that got you to love DVDs

This isn't about the first DVD you owned, but rather one that you either bought or rented that proved to you this was a cool format in which to collect movies.

The first two I bought were Enemy of the State and Crimson Tide, which were both barebones and did little outside of offer great picture, sound, and chapter skipping.

A week later I rented Cruel Intentions and it was the first DVD I had seen with commentary, deleted scenes, and little featurettes. Granted, that's really nothing to write home about, but it was enough to sell me on the format.

Honestly, the first dvds I got(one of the Austin Powers, image of an assasination, contact, Silence of the Lambs criterion) All showed me that dvd was cool as hell. They just got better after those.

My first was The Wild Bunch, and that's all it took for me, too.

more than one. A friend got a dvd player before me in 98 and had Terminator and Tomorrow Never Dies which both looked and sounded great. Those got me to buy a player, but when I bought mine, Die Hard was the movie that blew me away. Picture quality was phenomenal. Way better than I had ever seen it(VHS or Cable). This was back in 98 mind you.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. First time that I saw a horror film have such an A+ treatment in terms of picture quality and extras.

I think Matrix could very well be the title that sold a majority of people on the DVD format.

My first was Brazil, I was sold on the format before I even got it.

Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition. Although it wasn't one of my first dvds, I was amazed with how well the set was produced--from box and menu design to the beautiful transfer and 4 commentaries. No looking back after that-

I guess I didn't have one specific DVD that did this for me. While I didn't really get rolling with my collection until a year and a half after I bought my first player, just the idea of owning my favorite movies, TV shows, etc., on a format that ensured repeated viewing without degeneration; not to mention the possibility of bonus materials, made the DVD format impossible not to love.

Grolim 10-07-04 05:10 PM

The Matrix

darkside 10-07-04 05:14 PM

DVD?

It was this damn website and all the free DVDs jackasses like Real.com where giving away that turned me into a collector. I didn't even realize I liked movies until a year later.

darqleo 10-07-04 05:26 PM

It's a tie because I bought them at the same time (my first DVDs)

THE MATRIX - because of the sound and picture compared to VHS/Laserdisc

EXCALIBUR - because of seeing it remastered and in it's Original Aspect Ratio. Older movies are great on DVD, it's almost like seeing them for the first time again.
