I bought three at the same time:

Grand Illusion (Renoir)
The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer)
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Philip Kaufman)

The Rock. Didn't even know there was anything special about "Criterion" then either. Must have been 3 years ago now. Still haven't opened it. Keep meaning to.

I was picking up a bunch of copies of Armageddon from Columbia House and exchanging them for credit at suncoast back when the list price was 49.99. I finally just picked up a used copy to own two weeks ago. I'm now officially a proud owner.

SOTL. I picked it up at the mall right after I received my first DVD player (2001, late start) and as Hannibal was coming out. I couldn't find the older SOTL release, and I at the $40 price tag of the CC, but I didn't know any better. Now I'm looking at this OOP CC SOTL that I opened...but at least I enjoyed it with my wife.

BTW, YMMV

I believe it was This is Spinal Tap, which I got for about $11 new online. One of my first online DVD purchases. I think the second was Silence of the Lambs which I got for 33 cents in the 800.com 3 for $1 deal. Those were the days.

"Andrei Rublev"

Not only was it my first Criterion, but it was the reason I bought a DVD player. I was wandering through Tower Records (used to be on Newbury Street, Boston), and saw it. I was like "whaa...?" It was cheap compared to the LDs I'd always considered beyond my means, and promised to be better than my old VHS. I bought it.

A few days later, I bought my first DVD player. A Pioneer DV-414, which is still working liking a champ in the second bedroom system.

That's my first Criterion too! Bought it on 2001, however.

The tougher question for me would be remembering the 2nd, 3rd, and so on. I do remember the 1st though
