All of it. It underwent a multi-million-dollar cleaning and restoration because the original negative stock had faded. The restoration was good enough that thousands of prints were struck and released to theaters worldwide, with no one complaining about the quality.

As far as the originals not existing anymore, Lucasfilm would have scanned the original negatives into a computer in order to recomposite the special effects and add new digital tweaks. These digital files then would have been printed back to film as new negatives, leaving the original negs unaffected by the changes (an advantage of a film source instead of the digital source in Mike Lowrey's example).

Lucas surely would not have destroyed these original negs, because he'll need them again in the future when he decides to tinker with them yet again (let's say to take care of any more continuity "problems" if he decides to film a third trilogy in a few years).

Then SHUT UP! Let us talk about what we want and get the hell out of threads about it.

Sorry to all for yet another OT post in this thread. (and yes, that's a double meaning)

Back at ya.

Well, the thread won't ever get back on track. Salty, Kal, and I all deleted our non-related posts. But it was for nothing. This thread won't ever get back on track now.

Let's say that I am a computer graphics artist. I paint a digital picture. I save it to disc and I release it. Then 20 years later, I go back to the same picture, change it, enhance it or do whatever I feel like with it. I then save over the only copy I had. The original no longer exists. Therefore, I can never ever re-release the original version. This is, I believe, what essentially happened during the initial SE restoration 8 years ago. Just the simple restoration forever changed the film. Quite frankly, I don't think you folks who want the originals release don't really understand what the films went through during the '97 SE process. It's as simple as that. I'm pretty sure they used the original film prints. Not some copy of them.
Do you really think Lucas is stupid enough to hit the save button and trash the originals completetly? I mean seriously. He has said the originals don't exist anymore in the his narrative sense, not that they don't physically exist somewhere in his computers.

Well, it's kind of a no-win. That other thread hasn't had a post in weeks & I don't think that's a bad thing. Some people have complained about the useless back & forth ranting going on here, but if we continued it in the other thread, then there would just be other people who would start complaining that there are too many Star Wars threads on the front page. A better solution would've been to have someone more dedicated start the thread who was willing to update the first post when news came out. Then we could all continue with our crazed ramblings while people who only want DVD info could just check the first post periodically. Of course, that wouldn't be perfect because people wouldn't know when the first post was updated, so ...hmm...

Maybe this thread is long enough for a Part 2 anyway.

As I indicated above, the beauty of film is that it exists outside of computers, thus enduring any digital tampering. Lucas has to keep it around for any possible future use, or put up with a significant loss in quality by using a second or third generation element.

I guess there's still a market for bootlegs of the OT.
I don't know if Lucas is greedy, if he was, he'd release the OT seperately and make lots of $$$.

Oh well, its his story, guess he can do what he wants. I for one am looking forward to the DVD release.

The only problem with that is Lucas in all likelihood has hi-def digital masters of all 3 films and every element that exists, especially with the way he thinks in digital terms.

That is so hilarious. So how did they make the new Jabba for the DVD? Did they just take their erase tool and erase the SE Jabba, then add the new one? No... they went back to the version of the scene with Boba Fett already added (one of many versions of the movie that exist in digital form, including the original and the restored original) and added him again, just like they did in '96.

And anyway, your analogy doesn't even hold up. Graphics artists use several layers to composite a single image, not one flat image. It's easier to edit later that way, or create a version of the image without one particular part in a few seconds.

Doesn't really matter to me. I'll be displaying them in their separate amaray cases and storing the over-sleave case.

There ya go, I was going to keep them in the box (black side facing out) next to the Indy and Alien sets.

Is it 9/21 yet??

From what I've seen of the cleaned up and re-done scenes, I cannot wait to hear and see this. Thank God for me my wife is out of town that night. I'll be watching all 3 back-to-back. And then maybe back-to-back again just because I can....

No, look. I don't have a hatred for anybody or their opinions on the matter. Should the originals be released? Sure, for those who want them, but what if, just what if, that what Lucas has been saying for the past, oh what is it now, 8 years, that the originals don't exist anymore from the raw film source. And if so, then continual petitions or arguments, for them are pointless.

It's like getting blood out of a turnip.

In other words, have you ever considered that why the originals aren't being released is because for the exact reason Lucas has stated?

The fact that you and your "originals" friends continue to think that I have some irrational intolerance or hatred towards your opinions is saying more about you than I. I am mearly trying to use logic and what we actually know to debate why they haven't been released, instead of your position where you say, "I think they should be released, simply because they should." Well, that's fine. But if they don't exist, then no amount of complaining, petitioning, etc. will ever get them released.

Let's say that I am a computer graphics artist. I paint a digital picture. I save it to disc and I release it. Then 20 years later, I go back to the same picture, change it, enhance it or do whatever I feel like with it. I then save over the only copy I had. The original no longer exists. I'm pretty sure they used the original film prints. Not some copy of them.

In order for the originals to be released today with an acceptable transfer, Lowry Digital would have to go back to the original film (if it still exists) and restore it. But if the films were in as bad of shape as they claimed in '96, then how much worse would they be today 8 years later?

I'm not using conspiracy theories here. I'm using logic and known facts. You can choose to accept that, or you can go on thinking that Lucas is lying to you that he has the originals locked away somewhere.

Trust me, the originals are safe and sound.
