The few people that have seen my dvd wall (About 1,000) , usually have to make some comment about how "that's way too many" and how they only have about 10 or 15. I then inform them that even at a mere 10 or 15 dvds they still own more dvds that suck, than I do

I usually just get the same "Holy shit, dude" responses. Or lines about how "crazy" I am for having so many. I've never had anyone really get at me for having so many, except maybe my brother.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, since about half of my titles aren't what most people my age would have on their own DVD shelf. Yeah, I've got a lot of stuff that appeals to my demographic (American Pie, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Usual Suspects, etc.), but then there's another portion of my collection that would've drawn groans and displeasure from most people my age, had we been forced to watch it in school (Citizen Kane, Casablanca, most of my Criterions, etc.).

I try and not come off as too condenscending for preferring to get something like Citizen Kane instead of something like Euro Trip. I may be betraying my generation in the eyes of many of my peers, but I like to think I keep things real by having a nice blend of acclaimed classics, personal favorites, and movies that appeal to people my age. After all, there's no reason Casablanca, Dick Tracy (1990) and American Pie can't share the same DVD shelf.

most of the time, they just go 'wow... (what a waste of time/ money)....'

'umm, can i borrow these?'

'how do u have time to watch all these?'

'please, PLEASE can i borrow these?'

honestly, i have not met a single soul who shares my passion for movies in the form of collecting DVDs and that's why i feel a great sense of belonging here

I've heard the same question!

Sometimes its difficult to explain certain titles like that (or trying to explain my Japanese Nikkatsu pink films) to the average person. But its fun trying to.

There was a time when I had well over 1,000 DVDs.
When people saw it, they were in awe . . .

I've since downsized to about 200 DVDs.
Now those same people come over and they're like, "Aw" . . .

Most people who know me react by shouting "YOU WORK IN A VIDEO STORE! WHY DO YOU OWN SO MANY DVDS!?!?!"

People who don't know me don't get to look at my collection.

Usually they look about 2 minutes, and decide I have nothing to watch. I'm pretty sure they're usually looking for recent blockbuster releases, which I don't really have a lot of.

Usually i hear this:
A. Why you have so many DVD's bought as you can rent them? (have about 450, and no, you can not generally rent what i want to view)
B. You're nuts. You could buy a car with the money you've spent for DVD's. (dont own a car, i love films)

Thank god almost nobody want's to borrow my DVD's as i mainly have non-hollywood (or if American then mostly 1930-1950's), European, Asian and Silent films. Usually they are for recent Hollywood mega-busters only. My films are from early 1900's to mid 1960's mostly anyway.

My collection (~70 films) is probably one one the weakest on this board, but still my family says I have way too many... I guess it all depends on where you base "normal" at...

You can catch up if you try. Or, just be satisfied. My brother is in your range and quite happy. If he had more money he would have a larger collection, but he is content to trail me by a few hundred.

I think a lot of people get hung up on size - If you enjoy it, there is nothing weak about it. When I get mine fleshed out with all the catalog titles I want, and then just add tv and new releases I will be happy. I like having a lot to choose from, but I am constantly weeding mine out and I am thinking of cleaning house on it. I won't though, not strong enough.

Fortunately, DVD collection != penis size, thus I'm quite content with my collection. Still, it is too bad that one can't improve the latter as easily as the former.

I have around 800 DVD's mostly all anime DVD's. Most of the time people make a comments such as I've never seen that many anime DVD's in my life.

My collection (nearing 2000) isn't typically seen by visitors. If I have a party in which we might watch a movie, I usually bring out 20 or so titles to choose from. (If I did anything else, no decisions would ever be made!)

First, they can not fully react because the collection is spread out over four rooms and the garage. What they do see if a long pile over their heads and going on for around 15 feet. This is only the first room and then they realize it keeps going.
Shocked silent is ususally what I get. They don't even get to what titles I have for a while.

"I've never heard of these movies."

And that's from my friends with 500+ multi-region collections. I only have 60-70+ but the collection is quite . . . eclectic.

My friend's girlfriend was quite impressed. She swooned when I said she could borrow any of them.

Now, in which way do I eliminate her boyfriend?

I'd be very curious to see a list of what you own. Our tastes seem similar.

No doubt. My friends and such are much more mainstream. Folks I converse with here would be less surprised. My friend's girlfriend was the first person to see my collection and say "Ooh, In the Mood for Love!" She was also genuinely excited when I leant her my copy of Three Businessmen. I usually have to foist it upon people.

I have all my Criterions in a drawer. I did this pretty much to protect what I would consider my most valuable DVDs but in turn I can't impress visitors with the likes of Kurosawa, Renoir and Bergman. But people still think I have way too many.

I usually get a as I have a rather extensive collection, which I have downsized and removed many titles +300 as they were not fitting with me or my thoughts about the film.
